New to Collecting Figures; a Question for the Experts

Posted by infjeff [www]

Hi! I'm Jeff and I've been lurking on this fun little site for a while now. I consider anime my main hobby and I'm just starting a collection of my favorite characters. I bought my first figures in January and I've kept all of them in their boxes until a few days ago when I had a mass opening. I really like them!!! (Nendoroids heads are heavier than I expected! Ryoko has toppled over a few times even with her stand).

I just have a little concern that I've researched but found little info on. Is it normal to have the room smell like PVC 2 days after opening? It might have something to do with I have a few older figures that have been sitting in boxes for a few years and that I opened many at one time. Also, my room has very limited circulation, an A/C unit is currently in my only window.

I must sound like a real noob, huh? Anyway, I appreciate any comments and I look forward to posting more on this website in the future!

    There is always that strong PVC smell when I first open the figures but it doesn't last very long, not even a day I'd say. I am sure the fact that you opened a whole bunch at once has a great deal to do with the smell lingering on for 2 days!

    PVC smell should be gone fairly instantly. "New (PVC) figure" smell smells good but is unhealthy= =

    I question the ventilation of your room if it lingers forever. Open a window, fan out the door with a pillow, do something to move the air xD

    Really depends of the figure, I ordered Canaan and arrived like 2-3 weeks ago, I opened a week ago, and she still smells almost like new (new PVC odor), all of your figs seem to be original, but just in case, if you ever get a bootleg, spray it with lysol or something, these usually have a strong smell and are very toxic, my room doesn't have windows neither, so when I opened like 20+ 1/6 and 1/7 figs it still smelled for 2 weeks!!!, if you are in the room and after 5 min you still perceived the smell, don't sleep there, open the door, put fans everywhere, and if you can, put an air purifier fan and spray some lysol aaround, don't be like me, that didn't care and got kind of intoxicated the first 3 days, 'coz it was my first time sleeping in my new PAINTED room with my NEW opened figures!!!! ^__^' somehow I don't regret it

    Unless the room is really small just keep the door open for a day. Usually the PVC smell goes away in less then a day in my room.

      Yep! It was a quick pic I took before work, I guess the angling wasn't perfect.

    I appreciate all the feedback, it sounds like my room's lack of ventilation is the problem so I'm thinking I'll remove the A/C from my window tomorrow and have it wide open for a couple days. The smell is getting less potent so I think it'll work out just fine. Just as long as I don't pass out from the fumes. ^^;

    It's also worth noting that the softer, more rubbery plastics, like those used in Figmas, retain their smell MUCH longer than hard PVC does. It has to do with the compounds they use to soften it. I've had to leave some of my Figmas outside for several days before the smell dissipated enough that my mother let them into the house. ^^; If any of your figures have softer plastics like that, that may also be contributing to the scent.

      I don't have any figmas, but does that also apply to Nendoroids?

    Sounds like pretty standard off-gasing. Not exactly healthy, but not unusual either. All plastics off-gas when new (new car smell, new paint smell, etc) and if they've been stored in a box then the results will be concentrated. So yeah: opening a window for a bit is probably your best bet... since to the best of my knowledge no-one makes a low VOC figure yet =P

    Love the Gunslinger Girl figures by the way. Been vaguly trying to track down 'Etta at a resonable price for a bit... unfortunately every time I find her other financial concerns get in the way ^^;
