40 Hour Famine

I don't know about the rest of the world but here down-under in New Zealand each year World Vision run the 40 Hour Famine to raise huge HUUUUGE amounts of money for people all around the world. So what is this famine you ask?

About the Famine

So you want to know more about the 40 Hour Famine? In a nutshell it's all about going without for those without. That means standing up for those in our global community who struggle every day to get what we take for granted; safe water, food, healthcare, and education.

The 40 Hour Famine is on 21-23 May this year. You can do it on your own, with a group or with your school mates. All you have to do is get people to sponsor you for going without something you find difficult to give up for 40 hours.

■It's fun
■It's about fighting poverty, hunger and injustice
■It's your chance to go without for those without

If you want to know more please check out www.famine.org.nz

Any way the point is I wanted to do a post here because I want to give the international community a chance to open their hearts and wallets.

I have personally been doing the 40 Hour NO FOOD Famine each year since I was about 12, and I have raised hundreds of dollars each time.

This year my goal is $140 or more, to get a nice Toilet for the children in Cambodia, because face it everyone needs good plumbing. So $140 NZD buys a toilet, $50 teaches a mother in Rwanda about good nutrition so her children can grow up healthy (My sponsor child is from Rwanda! Go Tony! he is 14). and $35 gets soap, gloves and medical supplies to caregivers of orphans and people living with HIV and AIDS, and $16 gives children in Tanzania school books and supplies.

And this is just NZ dollars which are small compared to other global currencies.

So please open your hearts, pockets, wallets, and online banking and give whatever you want however much you like or can afford, and one weekend of me not eating will make the world of difference to someone else in the world.

Well here, we did do something almost similar, for continuous 30 days, around 14hrs per day. It's called fasting. And during the same time, we also are required to pay "zakat" (can be said as a minor version of tax), though this "zakat" collection usually will be channeled to help people in poverty here.
