Not sure if there's a warranty seal or anything but you can open it up without breaking anything. Funny you ask, because I only opened it because it wasn't working and I wanted to try directly connecting it with SATA.
Mine stopped working too, and want to connect it directly, really a pain in the ass, mine is a 1.5 TB, lost 1TB of info!!!, I'll try to pry open it then but was hoping to claim the warranty XD, my precious data may be still in there, If I can save who cares about the warranty >.<, did yours got recognized after connecting it directly??, >.<
