How to destroy over 200 hard drives
Sat 2010/06/05 12:12 JST

So I've got over 200 hard drives that we need to destroy at work. Here is you challenge, "What would be the best way to destroy them all?"
If your suggestion is realistic and epic enough, we will do it and put it on you-tube.
Update: I like a lot of the suggestions. Unfortunately our supervisors will only let us do it the old fashioned way, sledge hammer, here is the video.

A normal person: Get a tool or hire someone for this situation.
An engineer: Create some sort of crazy invention to erase and destroy the hard drives.
go to the top floor of a tall building, then drop all at once.
make sure there's no one at the groundfloor, it would be a mess...;P
Shaped charge? Beehive, hayrick.
Or you could just "toss 'em on the Barbie" and have a Seagate roast.
Bonfire?
The worst enemies of heat, magnetism, or physical damage. Suggestions for destruction via the 3 options? Magnetism - get some huge powerful magnets and run them around the harddrive, heat - find a microwave or oven you don't want and shove them in, or physical damage - there's nothing a good ol' sledge hammer can't fix.
Oh if your lazy just pour some gasoline or kerosene and watch it burn :P
Use thermite!!!
Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQYPCPB1g3o&feature=player_embedded =D
Ramirez use the semtex!
Thermite gets my vote.

Agreed on thermite. But add in some gasoline for extra fun, just make sure you've got a big open area.
Car filled with gas + thermite = explosion.

or Tannerite
Why can't you bring them home and make a massive server? I'd do that or don;t they allow you to bring it back?
Security Policies, so long as the magnetic disks are intact, there's the possability that you can recover data.
Not worth it. Together they are about 9GB each and they were used for two server towers which had 1TB storage in RAID
Wait a sec.. They acutally put 200 9GB drives together to get their Terabyte+ of HDD sapce? That's so... so... Outdated... xD
First, go to a bay and use a magnetic crane on them. Then use the vehicle they use to make road ( http://www.hangton.com.vn/upload_photo/offer/lino66661243840913_Lu.jpg don't know the words) run over them all and then dispose of them as non burnable trash.
Where's Magneto when you need him!
donate to the needy people for those that still working.
for those that most likely bad, hmmm... magnets will only change the magnet polarity on disk surface..
cant think of an idea to kill em..
It would be cruel to donate them to anybody, they are small and only have SCSI connectors.
Will it blend? :P
I second this~
Third!
That is a question heh?
Try having a live-round target practice session with 'em? :P
please at least do them in a environmental friendly way...plz...
after we destroy them, we recycle them. (company policy)
*Evil Grin* Think Pumpkin Chunkin!!! >:)+) Oh OH OH ROCK CRUSHER!! Or maybe bicycle inner-tube 3 man slingshot at a concrete wall or bunker. I'd be careful with the slingshot though.....
I wonder if you could use a steam roller and a heavy steel plate...
Teehee! Yep, that would definitely do it for sure! LOL. b(^v^)d
Get one of those giant magnets, put them all underneath it, magnetize then drop from a tall place
There are companies that specializes in secure destruction of data in the hard drives. In some cases, they will go to their client's offices and bring a portable machine with a magnet inside that will completely wipe all data off the drives. This will also prevent anyone else from resurrecting the data. After that, you might want to consider either donating the drives or selling them to a recycling company.
It costs money getting it done. However, if the data is sensitive, any responsible company should spend the money and effort to keep such data from falling into the wrong hands.
Why now Microwave them hehe? or watch the recent episode of click http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/default.stm it will help you DESTROY!!!! anything you want rid of hard drive and CD wise mwahahaaa
Get an assembly line and then remove the disks and crush the cases, making sure that you break or bend the actual platters. Use a hammer!
KILL IT FIRE!!!!!!
Stuff them all in a blender! While you're at it, add some crushed ice, milk, and honey with water!
Just pour gasoline on them and let it burn...
ROADROLLER
I agree xD
Make an Ironman suit out of it for yourself to wear
Either Zap 'em, or just DoD wipe em!!!! XD
Or you can just put all the hard drives in two single file line and run over them......
please define destroy first, i want to know to what extension u want to do, if simply not let other people get date from it ot physically let it disappear. in my opinion get a big tank filled with high concentration H2SO4, HNO3 or any thing like that will do the job quite well
DOMINOES! Might not destroy them 1st time, but it would be a fun game :)
Stick them together to form a HDD Gundam~!
That would be hilarious!
Stop! Hammer Time!
or failing that, you got one of these handy? ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp8sFsriH4c
keep em and sell em xD
HDD's are fire proof ,water proof and (supposedly) shock proof
i suggest open them get the magnet disk and Frisbee them at people
hm...since you want them COMPLETELY destroyed, how bout blowing them up? i assume industrial explosive charges are available to you? If not, burning it up till its charred could be good too :P
Use it to plug that oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
That would be funny if it worked.
Use a large magnet to bring them to a place for burning then crush the charred remains.
Or use a con-saw to easily slice em into pieces.
May not be as enthusiastic as the other suggestions, but I suggest dropping them into a vat of acid. Problem is finding an acid strong enough to melt metal... I'd suggest wiki'ing that.
Use huge electromagnets like those used in junkyards/ container movers, then get a steamroller and crush'em to bits...not sure how to clean up the aftermath though. Huge vacuum cleaner?
Here's a question: Are you guys Gunpla/mecha modelers?
Suggestion: If you can find some serious (And I mean SERIOUS) mecha modelers out there who need bits and pieces for their kits, sell these to them for cheap, on the condition that they have to be the ones to disassemble and destroy the drives.
You have no idea what I can do with tiny circuit boards, the disk 'reading needle', motors, etc from a broken hard drive...and I'm not even that 1337 at mecha modelling...
Another nutty one: put them all in the back lot, and provide an aluminum baseball bat at the door.
Put up sign next to door saying: "Stress Relief: $0.50/half hour"
When someone at the office has a bad day, lead them into the back lot, and watch 'em go to town on the drives. >D
Third suggestion: Make an Iron Man suit.
Just resell them on junk shops...
I mean sell*
