Detolf overhaul.

Posted by Al-Tank [www]

Detolf itself is certainly a fine piece of Swedish ingenuity. Just think about it, four pieces of tampered glass, few metal rods, chrome hinges and couple of boards made of a wooden scraps! All this for around $60, brilliant!

Wouldn’t you mind having a mirror in your Detolf, so you won’t only glare on the fronts of your figurines, Gundams or pristine Victorian pottery for what so not? I certainly wouldn’t!

Mirror-like finish for less than $8. Brilliant!

No doubt, it's an ingenius design. Unfortunately, I been spoiled by the sales of the white detolf. I got 2 for $20 and 2 for $30. For now, I can't get myself to buy them for $60. lol

Can the detolf be setup by one person? and how heavy is this whole thing?

Not heavy at all. But you'd rather have another set of hands to hold up the side walls. Though it is possible to assemble a Detolf all by yourself.

The instruction shows you need 2people as you build from the top, but you can build it yourself with alittle help from a chair or table(to keep the glass up). Read the instruction thru and build from the bottom up.

I put all of mine together myself, it's not terribly difficult. It's definitely easier if you lean some pieces up against the wall or something.

Is the coating on the inside or outside of the case? I might need to give that a try...

Actually it all depends on the film, that you will be able to lay you hands on.
Some of the films have reflective finish on the sticky side and will be mounted on the outside. Other, like mine, have reflective finish on the smooth side and have to be mounted on the inside.

Hmm... mouting on the inside would be difficult since my shelves are put together. They'd be a pain to take apart just for the coating. :(

I blew apart my first one, which isn't too much trouble at all. Keep in mind, though, it's much easier to work, when the surface is horizontal.
