My desktop didn't have one to start with. But after some time I always end up making my machines at least double what I need for what I like to do :D

it's old, but it works. Most of the older Mac's I've seen seem to run Leopard just fine.

So what does your company do ? Any portfolios ?

You might run into compatibility issues with that processor - current applications are made for Intel processors and some may not support PowerPC, which Apple stopped using in 2006.

grats on the new computer. i wouldn't bother upgrading. you may have trouble installing and running new apps. also watching hd vids will be impossible. i would save the money and buy a new computer.

But... if you just got a Mac, I'm wondering why you didn't go for the latest models... G4 is pretty old already, infact, even before the standardized MacBook lineup.

Well. IMO If you are starting to COLLECT Mac computers, it's a good beginning. Otherwise...

I had a powerbook before I got my macbook pro. They are great machines, but definitely upgrade the ram, 512 mb won't get you very far ^^;. What OS is it running? It should be able to run leopard since its a G4. Congrats on getting your powerbook!

I'd run that on Linux, not Mac OS X. Tiger is the last Mac OS X version that will run comfortably on that machine. However, Debian PPC would be great on there. You might want to run XFCE as your graphical environment: it's light and very Mac-like. Another possibility for GUI would be LXDE. It's not as Mac-like as XFCE but it is good. It actually reminds me of earlier versions of KDE in that it's very Windows-like.

I inherited a G4 - got a broke screen, but I use a peripheral monitor. . . won't record CD's - but I has OC stuff and an iPod Touch so the world is at rest . . I will be getting an iPad shortly, so all is well . . . the G4 can be a work horse AND if you got it for nothing . . . "a bird in tha hand beats two in tha bush" . . .it's a GOOD machine . . . :D
