MG ガンダムエクシア Gundam Exia WIP 1
Meant to post this earlier but I forgot. ^ ^;
Copied from blog post as usual.
There are a couple problems that I got to deal with, but I will worry about it when I get to it. I will also be only building the frame 1st, then the armors later.

So 1st here is the upper body unit, painted and panel-lined. Loving the details on it. Will be adding a GN stripe to the neck once the entire frame is built.

Here is the back. It has a huge gaping hole where the GN Drive will go. ^ ^;
It has some nice details inside of it. ^ ^

One thing that I hate about MGs is the fact that the cockpits are not even remotely close to how it’s supposed to be. It’s design is completely off and it’s obvious that they didn’t even do the research. It looks like they just made it up at the last minute. >.<

Finally here’s a picture of a piece that’s unpainted. It’s a bit darker in real life but I still didn’t like the color and I painted it over.

Here’s the lower back piece, painted and panel-lined.

The frame of the body unit is completed. Once again the colors are darker in real life. Will be moving onto the shoulders next.

thats something that Bandai should work on, at least on the PG line
Well, Bandai can definitely fix the cockpit, but that would mean molding really thin plastic which could break easily. They tried doing thin molds with the likes of the MG Exia and MG Astrays, but look at how flimsy they turned out to be.
A lot of people complain about Bandai's lack of detail and so called "inaccurate" parts at times, and when they do remedy them, people then complain about how flimsy and fragile they become. A good example are military kits. Their details are so fine that they cannot possibly be made into snap fit kits (Well, there are but those are beginner level detail, the likes that you give away at a modelling build session). If Bandai were to super detail their kits, it may come to a point that we need to glue. So really, let's just appreciate Bandai's effort for giving us cockpit detail that won't even be seen.
in the PG line its possible, since the pieces are bigger and more resistent, look what they where able to do with the new RG line, full innerframe in a 1/144 scale wow.
now about people saying MG Exia and Astray's being flimsy and fragile, well i dont really care since i buy models for display porposes not to play like they are action figures
I agree, but for MG's, let's just be thankful if there's any semblance of a cockpit at all.
I don't get what you mean. If they can make ugly seats for a cockpit then they can make a more accurate seat and cockpit, without any need for extra parts.
Injection molding limitations. If you want every nook and cranny to be replicated, you have to separate the parts so they can molded into the exact shape you want. Remember that molds are mostly two-part, three at the best. You can only do so much detail in a single piece.
But that's the thing, I don't want every single detail. Just some resemblance to the seat and maybe some screens.
They can already mold the seat in, so changing the design of the seat is definitely possible, without every detail.
It doesn't have to be the details. The way the seat is angled, the way the headrest is tilted, the shape of the seat cushions, the layout of the console and screens, they all require the mold to be more complicated in some way, that sometimes the better solution is just to break it down to smaller parts and make it easier to machine. Of course, that means more work for us. Or an even simpler solution is to design a crappier looking cockpit that can molded in one piece, which is the case. Remember that Bandai is also maintaining their reputation of making kid-friendly kits. That's the point of snap-fit parts after all.
I see what you mean, that molds can't get too complicated or it has to be in pieces.
But you don't seem to get what I mean. If they could make an inaccurate one, they could make an accurate one. If the shape, as you said, cannot be molded, then they could just change it abit. But in no way it should be completely off the original design.
the frosty look is on purpose?
Just noticed it now on the photos. It's near nonexistent in real life though.
heh, i like it, shows character
If that's how nice one part looks i can't wait to see the whole thing!
Thanks, the entire frame should be done in several weeks.
