Cheap way to duplicate MG Shin Musha's katana.
The MG Shin Musha has got to be one of my favorite gunplas, mainly due to his amazing array of ol school weapons. But I thought he would look even better if he was wielding twin katanas, so I attempted to duplicate his katana using whatever materials I could find at home.
This is basically a very amateurish, lame attempt at scratch building, so the rough results really show when viewed close. But it didn't look that bad when placed behind a display case, so I guess it works for me... lol.

Shin Musha, with his complete weapons array, but with one single katana... meh.

Using an empty talcum dispenser, salvage the plastic as my primary working material.

Trace out the outline of the original katana onto the salvaged plastic sheet.

Start cutting! Glue everything together using crazy glue @ supaglue. Easier said than done though... hehe.

Main parts completed : Blade, guard, hilt.

Quick testfit to check if the proportions are similar to the original... er... barely.

Time to apply primer to check for errors! And whatdaya know... HUGE... UGLY NOOB FINISHING pops up which can be viewed even from Pluto. Back to sanding... and more sanding.

I didn't have chrome paint, so I painted it with plain ol silver. But to compensate for the dull color, I tried to add a fake 'hamon' pattern onto the blade. This is done by masking the blade using normal masking tape and spraying the exposed area with light gunmetal.

Um... tada... the less than satisfactory result.

Painting done! 2nd test fit.

Here's Shin Musha with dual katanas. Like I said, it's way off from perfect, but I guess he looks slightly more badass now... ;)

Some additional quickie details were added using a Gundam marker, and voila... a cheap duplicate of the Musha katana is completed ^_^

I wonder if it works for glasses frames for scaled figures. Thanks for the awesome how-to guide.
Hey it's good one.. better add some shine to the blade (can add metalic foil) to make it look like blade. but anyway, you share ideas to others. Thanks. :)
Good idea ;) I think I'll try to add a gloss topcoat first... but will need to wait till the weather clears... been raining cats and dogs lately.
cool, ^-^ I wonder if I can make one for 1/6 doll
nice work.... fabricating your own pieces always great.
pretty cool. thnx for sharing.
Lame and amateurish? You are far too harsh a critic, man. This thing is freaking boss. I know a lot of people don't paint their MGs. Is the whole thing custom painted or just certain pieces?
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah... the whole thing is painted using hardware store spraypaints and Tamiya spraycans for the innerframe ;)
you shouldnt put yourself down like that. man i wish i could do such a thing myself but i cant.
Yo Wolfman... been following your works for a while... really like your version of the MG Unicorn - Black Wolf ;)
wow shin musha looks great in metallic red, what gold did you used, my shin musha is painted with Tamiya spray metallic gold TS-21, its good imo but your gold is mutch better.
nice work on the katana
Thx! It's some off the shelf hardware store gold paint... can't really remember the exact name... but it came in a really tall slim black can labelled KT gold effect or something like that... ;)
that idea aint cheap!
it gives good alternatives that's all. XD
Just a recommendation: Make a second katana to match your first. By your pics, you obviously have the skills to make a table stand for the original katana. with two hand-crafted katana for the Gundam, no one will notice the difference..Great work, btw....
o.O
Wow thats awesome O_O Very creative, and Shin Musha looks amazing too ;)
nice works~!
Awesome, if you had Chrome paint, you could've made them look like Gerbera Straights from the Red Frame.
