High School of the Dead-FIrst Thoughts

Hey guys

In summary I just really found this series lacking a bit too much. I came in not expecting much but still was kind of disappointed. Strangely enough my biggest problem was with the fanservice. WAY TOO MUCH! How can I take anything seriously or feel for a character when pantys are flashing across the screen every 2 seconds? If you know me then you know that I have absolutely no problem with fanservice (heck if I can get through rosario + vampire I should get through most right?) But I found myself constantly being annoyed by this.

On another note, the animation is pretty. Some great shots were done really well. But honestly I'm just going to look at this as moving pictures and not a story. Also the fact that every character is cliched in so many ways...

EDIT:
Afternote:

Guys, thanks a lot.

All your comments have made me reconsider my thoughts on the show. I kinda regret making this now since I was just riding on the moment and not thinking clearly. Now that think over it again I have to agree with most of the comments here. I think part of the reason for such a negative look was that partly I wasn't really in the mood to watch the show right then. I just got done with Durarara and was riding on animes with a strong story. So I'll save my thoughts until after the show is finished.

Thanks Fig.fm Comrades!

I think the panty showing, etc, well most of it is justifiable. Since if you are attacked by someone, especially zombies, clothes will be torn, etc. I think you get my point.

Animes haven't always been strong on following every detail of the manga storyline. If you want to know the story then I advise you should read the manga.

    Just my opinion~

Yea it all really depends on your level of tolerance for Fan service for me I never liked it in my anime/manga way back then but I've soon grown to just accept it and have ended up seeing some pretty good animes and reading some pretty good mangas because of that.

But as Suteki stated yea some of the Fan service in this was justified plus not that many zombie apocalypse type animes/mangas out there^_^ so for me I welcome it with open arms.

I don't like the fanservice much either and earlier when I was thinking about it. I'm wondering if the "horror" factor will continue like it delivered in the first episode. I saw a manga scan of the girls naked in a bath while an announcement about the zombies was being played. They were smiling, goofing off and being perverted. So, I'm wondering if this anime is going from horror/suspense right down the line to shoot em up zombies, nothing scary and just more fanservice.

Really though, how can anyone be smiling and goofing off casually during a zombie apocolypse?

If you have trouble with the fanservice means you've never previously read the manga. If you did, you'd already expected the glorious levels of T&A (as expected from a guy who began his career through drawing Hentai manga).

To me, there are zombies in it, and soon enough there will be guns, that's all I care about. That's an automatic 11/10 on my review scale.

Some parts of the manga never had a panty shot where as the animation had it in. For example, when Rei and the boys head up on the roof on the stairs and she got slammed to the wall by hulk, no panty shot in the manga but yes in animation.

Some scenes are missing as well in the animation which I think would be in on the BD releases :D

Yes, this one has zombies and the kind I like to see in anime, movie or tv. Funny how the zombies are all greyed out :/

Well, when she gets slammed into the wall it makes sense that her panysu would end up showing, mainly for the fact she slides down the wall which would I guess in turn lift the skirt up.

Fanservice is already a trend for animes nowadays, try to accept it. Plus, its the fanservice and violence makes the anime good, so I like this..

The story revolves around those B-rated movies. have you watched Living Dead? It's full of bad acting, nudity and zombies, guess this is where the author of this manga got his inspiration from. Moreover, he is a known hentai artist, fanservis is in his nature

I really enjoyed the first episode, yeah the characters are cliched, but they always are in Zombie flicks/games. I'd rather just enjoy this for what it is than complain, can't wait to see the guy with the glasses next episode more, apparently he's some kind of gun otaku, how he is in a country where it's illegal to own weapons (I think), I have no idea. But he nails that zombie in the head in the preview.

I would disagree with everyone. The "fan service" provides humor and thematic elements that wouldn't be possible without baring its characters. This show is self-aware. It pokes fun at its own genre and medium, and the excessive skin-shows are testament to that fact. The show is almost telling viewers not to take it too seriously. Yet, even still, the over-the-top sexual tensions, while definitely humorous, serve to distract the audience so that they may be caught off guard when the real horror elements come into play. It's a pacing tool.
This is an old-school zombie story. Unlike modern variants, the zombies in High School of the Dead are simply the catalysts of the horror, not the objects of it. Yes they kill and eat the citizens that populate the world as zombies are wont to do, but they also bring out the darkest and most primal aspects of human society. An irony of antagonism is the backbone of High School of the Dead. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm betting the creator was heavily influenced by George A. Romero and his work. In fact, the entire show seems to be a giant nod to Romero, and it's a freakin' awesome nod at that.
As for why the show is so heavily endowed with skin and curves, the answer is simple: because it adds. Like I said before, the "fan service" (whatever that means) adds a level of carnality to an already humanity-warping theme. High School of the Dead is a great show. I am invested in its characters, and I can't wait to see what happens.
