Figures Turning Yellow
This Mobile Suit in Action! series Force Impulse aged 6 years, and I've been keeping it either in a cabinet or a box. Pretty a cheap figure, around 1500 yen, and very playable but it has begun turning yellowish, kinda looks like metal rust at some ends, which i had no idea why. I didn't expose it to sunlight either... =.= Perhaps because the poor quality made Bandai discontinue the series and replace with Robot Damashii? Here's some images which the quality is on the crap side since i left my cam at the office and yesterday was Sunday. So, i had to resort to a shitty cam phone, but these images are enough to show my figure's situation, including a comparison with my MG Force Impulse's white color.
BTW i shot an image of my nendo Kuro-chan punishing Exia... >.< Last image... >.< I actually hung up Exia with that chain borrowed from 1/8 Hayakawa Yuzuko and glad that i didn't break anything.

Sad to say, yellowing is an inherent problem with yellow plastic. It's a change in the molecular structure of the plastic as it ages and there's no way to get rid of it by cleaning or polishing. The only thing you can do to get rid of it is either paint it or scrape the top layer off the plastic.
Some of my >10 year old Power Rangers figures that have been kept in storage have turned piss yellow. (^.^)
I see, cuz' some of my gunpla, ABS plastic, had no such issues (the oldest is around 8 years old) even though i don't top coat them. O_o'
All white plastics yellow eventually. However, some faster than others.
lovely way to describe the type of yellow actar
I seriously love the last image. The expression from Kuro and Exia are epic win.
last image the best !
u decapitated yuzuko >.<, as actar said, is the plastic nature to turn over time >.>
Hmmmm I have some gundam wing HG gunpla that I've had for about 6 years now and mine have yet to even show any signs of this maybe different environment may cause them to turn yellow faster but then again the one your showing isn't a gunpla like mine so it may happen faster to the plastic they used for that figure. I also have a Transformer that is about 20+ years old and consist mostly of white and it's not as yellow as your figure.
but I guess it's what actar said eventually it's going to happen and some end up turning yellow faster than others.
Does this happen to our prized PVC figures as well?
I sure hope it doesn't....
Even if it happens to PVCs, it won't be obvious, because this yellow effect is obvious on white surfaces. I won't want any on PVCs, they're a few times more expensive than Gundam... >.< Somehow i believe paints on PVCs are protected by a clear layer.
I see.. now that clears my troubled mind :3
The thought of having your cherished and well-cared figure just turn yellow is a nightmare.
plastics of all properties yellow duh!
its like we all age right ?
same anology.
Oh snap!!! XD
"this gundam was peeping me!"
You might try Retr0bright, It chemically reacts with the fire retardants that yellows ABS plastic returning it to its original color. http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/
