Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Ace Combat fans rejoice! The newest addition to the series is here and it looks awesome.

Fans like me have noticed a lot of new additions to the game. Since this is just a short trailer we are not really sure of the true nature of these new additions however I do want to present my personal opinions on each one of them and see if you all share the same sentiments.

1. Controlling helicopters/gunners: this caught me by surprise. I never expected them to bring this into the game. IMO it doesn't look well considering the overall nature of the game. The title itself (Ace Combat) gives you a general view of the game; fighter aircraft. When an average dude hears the word "aces", he immediately thinks of skilled fighter aircraft pilots dueling it out in the skies which is what the series is all about. In other words, this addition is a little bit out of place. Helicopters to an extent can be considered to be fighter aircraft but the series became popular on fixed-wing fighters. Also, seeing the player controlling a character that is not a pilot just makes it even more out of place.

2. The real world: Unlike the previous AC games, ACAH takes place on the real world. I find this one pretty disappointing because I was actually interested in knowing the history of the many fantasy countries that took part in every war in each game. Also, placing the story in the real world limits the game in aspects the AC series was famous for. For example; big flying aircraft carriers. You won't find that here in the real world. Even if you tie a made-up story with it, it would still sound ridiculous because you are already familiar with the happenings of this world. Another example; futuristic aircraft. Will you be able to explain how the famous Falken and Wyvern aircraft came into existence here in the real world without making it sound unbelievable? The same applies to the many superweapons found in the series.

3. Camera movements: This one I found very neat. You can see the action in angles never before possible in previous AC games. Some people hate it because they believe that is how the entire gameplay will look like. I think the extreme camera angles are only available on the replay after each mission. However that does not explain why the HUD and buttons still appear.

4. Destructible buildings: Nothing much can be said with this one. I've been waiting a long time for them to put this into the game.

The game will be out next year for both the XBox 360 and PS3.

woohoo!!! thats great news!! but it does seems that they make the whole dogfighting thing a little bit too easy? come on! you lose bogey by smashing button? looks like it won't be too much of a simulation this time....

It was never a sim to begin with. It's your standard arcade game made awesome by awesome graphics and a good story.

No Strangereal is bust. After 8 games in the same world, the real world is just lacking. Plus, no pilot in the real world could pull off enough crazy awesome stunts to be called "Demon Lord" or "Ghosts of Razgriz".
What Namco needs to do is a remake of 3 with a better ending and with an actual real human. I could imagine the nerdgasms echoing all over the community.
Still, it might as well buffer us until a real Ace Combat is made again. Hopefully if it has an online mode it will be better and more balanced. It kinda sucked that Raptors and Berkuts basically dominated everything.

It is great to hear AC is coming out a new series, but the trailer doesn't seems as dramatic as previous series. Hope Namco will come out a better trailer with a great story line

Yeah I was kinda disappointed with the fact that they decided to make the setting in the real world instead of a created world. I agree with the fact that the real world makes certain aspects of AC seem impossible especially super carriers, weapons, and planes like Falken. Also I agree with the limited amount of creativity given in terms of the story. Well just have to wait till more information comes out...hopefully they pull out a surprise and give a great story like 5 and Zero. For some reason I really get a Modern Warfare 2 feel out of it, I know they are two completely different genres of gaming...but I just get that feel, am I the only one?

Control-wise, I'll just wait for more information. I don't know about pressing a button do pro evasive maneuvers, seems to dumb down the game a bit IMO. Hopefully it's just press this button to get a dramatic view of certain actions.

I too had that Modern Warfare 2 feel during the helicopter scenes. For a moment, I almost shed a tear.

Well, I think the "action" button has potential for people new to flying or have no idea what to do when they are being tailed. If they do another mode, for example when you select ACE difficulty; you will have to do the maneuvers on your own without help. With training, or constant play, it will become second nature and you will be able to counter maneuver as desired.

The one thing I didn't like about Ace Combat was the physics however, knowing this is an arcade "flight sim". It's not a big deal and I'm looking forward to this release. I highly doubt I'm going to get an Xbox 360 to play Fire of Liberty.

I don't know about the downside of using the real world as a setting. It believe the real world setting and events shouldn't limit the game. An example is Metal Gear Solid II since, there was Arsenal Gear and do we have units like Metal Gear Rex? I don't think so but I do agree at the moment that the Ace Combat universe is the best setting for the Ace Combat franchise.

I see they dumped the fictional locales for a more realistic setting this time. Awesome

Personally, I think it's quite sad they dumped it... the fictional world added a unique touch that only Ace Combat had... now it's just like H.A.W.X, which was a bad AC imitation in the first place...

*goes back to playing The Unsung War

And there's a HAWX2 due out soon too! I wonder how the two will compare?

I see your point. And I think it's Namco's attempt to tap into the Modern Warfare crowd. Though I too will miss the epic sci-fi battles. Which now that I think about it IS what attracted me most. It was realistic as far as the Jets go but to a point. Guess we'll find out shortly if this lives up to the Ace Combat name.

I'm just happy its back on the ps3 again since my xbox red ringed XD

Just two more reasons for me to get the PS3, and I'm all over it. I just lurve AC acronymed games, and dang, the song in that trailer sounds like ear candy.

Being a big Ace Combat fan since Ace Combat 2 this is really great news that a new AC game is coming out, but, it doesn't seem as dramatic and their new dog fighting system(I suppose?) seems to break away from the AC tradition.

Setting it in the real world seems, well, quite lacking, I like it better when all sorts of crazy things happen in the AC world. >-< The helicopter scene took me by surprise... feels a lot like MW2 or Bad Company 2..

My 2 cents on this but we'll really have to wait and see how it turns out. =w=

This is probably a direct competitor the Tom Clany's HAWX and .... err.... -_- JANE'S Advanced Strike Fighters... (*being an old fart who misses the older days of Jane's* lol...)

Anyways. I don't have a PS3 nor any other consoles to play this one even if i wanted too.
    I pass..

unless they release a PC version maybe..
