Anime Music: A Personal Experience

Found Nagato Yuki on the web. Would be wonderful if she can play the violin live. :3

My first exposure to Japanese music was in those childhood days, when superheroes like Maskman, Bioman, Kamen Rider Black, etc. became a hit on the Philippine TV screen. I remember mimicking those dubbed songs of the shows, and somehow I continued to listen to some other songs from anime that was showed for sometime (personal favorites were Hironobu Kageyama, Nishida Hikaru, T.M. Revolution, Siam Shade). Then Full Metal Panic was aired on TV. I heard Shimokawa-san's voice (Tomorrow & Karenai Hana), and that was it. I knew I loved to listen to Japanese music.

At first, my family was being apprehensive about this recreation of mine, saying that I don't even know what they're singing about. I took that as a challenge, and began self-studying basic conversational Japanese. And right now me is still learning, though I can listen to a song now and get the gist of it without having to look for a translation). By that time (which was in high school), I've learned to write katakana and some few kanji (first grader ^^;) and some manga drawing basics. Hiragana is hard for me.

In college, I used anime and its music to keep me awake from all those all-nighter studies (I took clinical lab science), and luckily, I managed to graduate on time. And my parents were really happy because of this, so they just let me enjoy the music. :) Some of my blockmates who were into anime were also happy that they could listen to their favorite anime songs during breaks. Naturally, my phone/MP3 player's died out after a day. :)

Some of my favorite songs from way back:
Nishida Hikaru - Love is Changing
Kageyama Hironobu - Cha-La Head Cha-La DBZ
Shimokawa Mikuni - Karenai Hana

that's the same thing i did when i was a kid back in the motherland. however, the main theme of gundam wing and ultraman tiga got me into singing. I even sing in the classroom whenever we have like fun time during class or music class but during that time (1998 onwards) thanks to the tagalized yuyu hakusho anime was on the rise.

I believe the first time I really took notice of the songs in the anime is when I was watching Vampire Knight. I really enjoyed the OP and ED. Since then, I'd make sure I listen carefully to the songs from anime that I'm watching. Although I don't understand a single word that they're singing, it's still be cool as long as the melody is of listening pleasure.
