Volks 1/4 scale Mai Shiranui

Posted by mtomczek [www]

Another one of the fantastic 1/4 scale resin figures from Volks, this one is of all-time classic fighting game girl Mai Shiranui. This kit was picked up at the Volks store in Akihabara on one of my trips to Japan. In visiting the store and seeing all of the fantastic kits built and on display in the many showcases I noticed that all of the Volks girls were painted in a way that their skin had a bit of translucency to them. So after doing some research, I figured out how it was done and this is the first kit I attempted to re-create that painting style on. The key to this style and keeping the translucency is to prime the kit with a clear primer then paint the kit with clear colors instead of opaque.

So this kit was primed with Mr. Metal Primer (which is clear) and then painted with several custom mixes of clear Mr.Color paints added to Mr. Color Gloss Clear base. I really loved how the kit turned out and will be using this style on more of my figures in the future. The skin seems to have such a radiance that isn’t captured when using the opaque skin tones.

Wow, really great job. You did a really clean build and great paint job. I was really into doing garage figures for a few years but fell out of it for some reason.
I still have about 20 figures in storage I haven't started yet... Oh, if only I had the time (and the skill) hehe

    Outstanding paintjob, great work!

I avoided kits so far because of the painting. I did some model assembly and WH40K figure painting before, but I have too much respect for the detailed human skin of these figures, and I'm too afraid of messing the figure up ;)

Looks like you did a really good job with the painting. Thats interesting about the translucent paint. However, I don't much like this version of Mai, well, I'm kindof 50-50 on it. I do like the way you labelled it Fatal Fury instead of King of Fighters :)
