Inexpensive lighting setup

Posted by Ultimaknight [www]

After I posted my Sakura Matou debut, I received a couple of inquires about the lighting. So I thought it would be a good time to talk about my setup. The main thing I want to show is that you can still achieve some pretty decent lighting conditions without spending a lot on fancy lighting equipment. Also helps if you are like me and don’t have a lot of room for a professional lighting setup.

Enjoy these teaser pics and feel free to read more about it over at my blog

    I've been using CFLs for continuous lighting as well, but I'm looking at switching to 500/1000 watt flood lights instead. The weaker CFLs just aren't bright enough.

      These seem to be bright for what I do, but I may look into that for in the future.

      Yes, it fits on Sakura's L bust. I also had it on Rin when she was equipped with spare the L bust. It won't fit a DDdy bust though. Dunno why yours won't fit =3=

        How did you come to the conclusion that he had that equipment. The camera is likely a EOS 7D or a 50D and the lens is most definitely not a L lens. That looks like the standard 18-55 kit lens with no IS.

          Hi Fumika,

          It looks like you missed how the comments nested. Mine was directed (in jest) to Kiwira since he said he was too poor for LED lights. I'm pretty sure he has the gear that I was coughing about. And you are quite right. Ultimaknight is not shooting with a 1Ds MK III, he is shooting with a EOS 40D and a 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

              haha Yeah, for the lens at least. I used to shoot with a 40D so I could tell straight away that was the body. ^_~

    I think this is quite good. All that you need to do is play with some levels / contrast on Photoshop and you'll be completely set. :D

    That comparison between the natural light coming in from the window and artificial lighting really opened my eyes. It really is a drastic difference.

    I've always been too lazy to take the time and make an elaborate lighting setup. I just used sunlight coming in from a window instead. >_>;
    But after seeing your post, I think I may give it a try next time! ^^
    It doesn't look all too difficult and surely it'll pay off in the end.
    Thanks for sharing your tips~.

    Quite the useful innovation! But then again, I still prefer Natural Lighting all the while! And for stuido-esque shoots, nothing beats good ol' natural sun blazing through a huge window to light up the studio-esque set up! ^___^

    Read it over on your blog, a nice tutorial.

    Did try such home made lighting setups but alas all light bulbs here tend to be too warm (even those in lighting specialized stores). I’ve tried led lights but they’re shifting towards too cold and produce harsh, very directional light.

    Actually grabbed a value flash set at the photography store last weekend which I hope to experiment with soon to see how flash photography works out.

    This is what I just got:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400155405799
    Actually the description is a bit out of date, a relic of the earlier system they sold: the bulbs I got were 45w (500w equivalent) balanced at 5500K which is standard "daylight" balance for professional lighting equipment. Those are their current stock. I actually bought one more umbrella light so I could do 3 point lighting. I also have a compact (more or less) background stand from them...

    Green screen means I'm liberated as far as to "locations." 100% virtual, baby. Woot.
    And using continuous light means this rig can double as video lights.

      Maybe one day I can get some nicer things likes those. Right now though bit low on priority list though. Which is why I use the inexpensive method ^^;

      Plus don't have much space too.
