Michelle "Ms. Geek" Klein-Hass' ASCII Weekly Entry
OK, hoping that 6:50pm PDT 9/30/2010 is not too late for this. I live in LA and my dolls, in spite of their Japanese origins, have become "so LA." I have been taking pictures of Yumiko Natsume and Z. Yamamoto for about a year now. Namiko Yamamoto and Mitzi Chun entered into the picture this year. I wasn't expecting to have such a brood by now, but it's Kismet.
None of these pictures were taken with anything fancier than a Nikon point-and-shoot. However, I'm now a big Nikon partisan because when one of these two cameras started to fail, Nikon fixed it under warranty rather than put the camera on a pile headed for a container headed for China and give me a replacement refurb. My faceup artist Biff now has that one. I bought a second as a backup when I saw it refurbed for super cheap at Buy.Com.
Edit: here's the stuff they want from me...plum forgot about it in the midst of all the angst over the picture of me and the dolls...
Name: Michelle "Ms. Geek" Klein-Hass
Website or Twitter handle: http://twitter.com/msgeek93/ http://cartoongeeks.com/ http://otakunopodcast.com/
Country of residence: Panorama City, Los Angeles County, California, US
How long have you been collecting dolls?: A little over a year
Why did you start collecting?: Lizz aka Biff got me hooked.
Where do you adopt (buy) your dolls?: JunkySpot.Com, Den of Angels Marketplace, Volks Tenshi no Sumika in LA (Torrance, CA, US). Yumiko, a Yukino type Dollfie Dream, was given to me by the first person she owned, my Best Friend Forever Chad.
How much money have you spent on your doll hobby?: I don't wanna know.
What sort of doll events do you attend?: I have helped organize doll meets and attend a few. Usually all four of my vinyl charges come with me. It's bulky but not too heavy.
What are so special about dolls?: The most willing of photo models, they don't criticize your technique, they don't say "shoot from this angle it's my best side" and crap like that. You don't have to pay them, just keep indulging them with clothes and goodies and so forth. They have also become muses for my writing. Eventually a novel or two (graphic or otherwise, not sure now) will come out of their stories. I do photomanga. Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/msgeek/sets/72157622938805604/

I hate what I look like, but as the Jedi saying goes, "I will do what I must."

This is the wonderful Perez family. Mama Vanessa took that picture of me above. She's a person who still loves dolls and toys even as an adult, like me. I think she wants either a Dollfie Dream or an Obitsu, and so do the young Perez kids. They're adopted...she had an empty nest and an open heart and there were a brother and sister who needed a loving stable family, so this is their second crop of kids to raise. Not shown: Hubby.

I got real busy geeking out with my little netbook and the dolls wanted a trip to the beach. This is at my friend and Otaku no Podcast collaborator's house in Carpinteria, a beach town north of LA.
I actually live in the San Fernando Valley. Don't start with me on the Valley Girl thing. I don't speak Val. Sorry to burst a stereotype.

Whatever the dolliehs want, the dolliehs get. Beach time at Carpenteria State Beach, the "Safest beach in California" according to reports. It's not near any runoff channels, that's for sure.

This is Yumiko Natsume. All my dolls have a backstory, so I'll fill you in. Yumiko is a native of the San Fernando Valley, born to a Peruvian Nikkei (Japanese emigre) dad and a Peruvian mom who was part Native Peruvian and part Hispanic Peruvian: what people in the Americas call "Mestizo." She's wearing her Alice In Wonderland cosplay here. But as you can see, she is very LA.
Yes, that's a Corvette she's posing on. And the place this was taken in Culver City is very close to Sony Pictures Studio which used to be MGM, and the Culver Studios which was built as Thomas Ince's studio but became Selznick (Home of Gone With The Wind) and others until it ended up a place where indie productions rent space.
She wants to direct. Like so many Angelenos. But since her dad is a sound mixer for the movies, she has a better chance than most.
Doll specs: she's a Yukino-type Volks Dollfie Dream.
Car specs: I think it was a 2009 Vette. Very nice. That's my Cousin Brad behind the wheel.

That's Z. Yamamoto. When Yumiko met him, he was calling himself Zetto. Before that he called himself Zed. Why all the name changes? One, he's a musician. Two, his dad is named Noboru, his older brother is named Nobuhiko, and he's named Nobuo. Growing up, he had to deal with three Nobus in the family. His older brother is Junior now. The only person who answers to Nobu now is his dad, a master luthier. The guitar he's playing was made by his father as a gift for his 28th birthday.
Yumiko and Z are married now, something they weren't going to do so quickly but Yumiko's mom got seriously ill so that pushed things along.
Doll specs: Obitsu 2-piece torso 60cm with normal joints, male chest mod and 55cm abdomen part replacing original 60cm abdomen. Faceup by Biff.

Here's Mitzi (Miriam) Chun. She shares the same Korean first name as Korean-American comedienne Margaret Cho. This would not be so bad but the name is Mo-Ron. In Korean that means "Peony," but in English....not so nice.
Mitzi and Yumiko met in 2nd Grade in Van Nuys, CA. Yumiko grew up for the first few years in Northridge, not very far from the epicenter of the 1994 quake. The move was traumatic but finding a friend in the other Asian-American kid in class was a very good thing indeed. They became lifetime best friends.
After Yumiko and Z met, they found out something amazing. Z and Mitzi are cousins. Z's mom is Korean, and her family settled in Japan during the Korean War. Mitzi's family were actively involved with the UN war effort, and as many of them as possible were spirited away to the US after the Armistice, because they all were originally from the North and in danger of persecution there for their loyalties. Turns out that both of them were from basically the same North Korean family, which scattered as a result of the war. Further amazing thing: Mitzi's dad is a Jazz musician when not being a doctor, and Mitzi picked up drums. So she's now in Z's band.
So now they are all sort of part of an extended family. You'll meet the last member of the family in the next picture.
Doll specs: Obitsu 2 piece "Ball Joint" 60cm. Faceup originally by Parabox, doll was originally a "Friend Gretel" fullset. Extensive reworking by both Pumibel (previous owner) and Biff.

This is Namiko Yamamoto. Her dad is pro surfer "Junior" Yamamoto, but for most of her life she didn't know this. She thought "Junior" was her brother, and that Z was also her brother. Z's her uncle, she's Z's niece. Namiko means "Wave-child" so it is somewhat appropriate. Namiko was raised as the kid sister in the Yamamoto family.
She hangs around with Yumiko, Z, and Yumiko's family because things are pretty sketchy with the Yamamoto family. You see, after about 32 years of marriage, Noboru Yamamoto and his Korean-Japanese wife are calling it quits. It's complicated. Things are more stable at the Natsume household, although they are dealing with the trauma of Yumiko's mother's death from colon cancer. Like I said...it's complicated.
Namiko deals with the drama by throwing herself into sports. She's an avid skateboarder and is on the track and swimming teams at her new school. She's 12 but a little backward. Like everything around Yumiko, Z and Mitzi, change will be coming soon for Namiko.
Doll specs: Custom Volks Mini Dollfie Dream with a DDH-04 head. Faceup by Biff. She will be receiving either a Volks Dollfie Dream Sister or Obitsu 50cm body soon. Our little girl is becoming a woman...

So nobody's congratulating me for being brave enough to show off my ugly mug? Jeez...
nice to meet you, Ms Geek :>
Nice meeting you too! ^_____~
Great family ~ XD
Thanks.
Looks like she's ready to be a movie star.
Yes, she does have that star quality thing going on, doesn't she? That's why I love her so much. I gotta take some "red carpet" kind of glamour shots of her.
Gonna need to teach her how she should sign an autograph.
Oh she knows how to do that already...signing for this and that, clothes, shoes, companions...you know how dolls get...demanding, high maintenance, but we gotta love 'em still.
hehehe in the first pix your dollfid kids looked very surprised ^^; I wonder if there's a setting you can turn off the flash?
Yes there is, but the person taking that picture was my neighbor and it was the first time she had touched my particular camera. Different makes tend to do things subtly different ways, and she wasn't used to mine. I basically had to take what I could get. I suppose I could do things with auto-timer, my tripod and have some object standing in for me when I composed the picture, but time was a-wastin' and I had to get it done. I am quite grateful Ms. Perez took the shot for me. Yeah, they do have that "deer in headlights" look to them, don't they? ^^;;
lol you have the deer in headlights look too XD
Yeah, and red-eye too. Oh well, at least there is a picture of me with the dolls.
Typically when I give my camera to unsuspecting others, I change all presets to the correct values first.
Just treat them like voice-controlled camera stands (not even tripods, since they are not so stable) and you will be golden ;)
I didn't think it would be necessary seeing as it's just a little point-and-shoot camera, darn it! I will know for the future. Then again, next time I do something like this I will have the studio lighting fully operational. Witness the power of a fully operational Death Star...I mean, a fully operational daylight-balanced photo CFL continuous lighting rig...
In fact the point and shoots typically absolutely need some tweaking, otherwise they pretend to be too smart which only sometimes works if you are outdoor in bright sunlight ;)
At leas that's my experience.
Yeah.
Then again, Nikon seems to have a better handle on it than most. I really am turning into a Nikon head. When I get a DSLR, that's who I'll get it from.
I commend your braveness!
And nice family too.
Thanks! Love your family too!
Love to see your fantastic four ! :>
and nice to meet you ^_^
Nice to meet you too.
Nice to meet you^^
It was nice to meet you and your critters.
lovely family, human and dolly ;) I enjoyed reading their background stories ^^
Thanks!
nice to meet you! nice family you have there :D
Yes, same for you.
Nice pics, Ms. Geek.
Thanks.
Nice to see your vinyl friends make the entry :3
Took me getting out of my "comfort zone" to do it.
Nice pics (yours included). You have such a detailed backstory for your group, it's really amazing.
It will eventually be a novel. I might actually have to tone down some stuff to make it believable, but Z and Mitzi finding out they're cousins and the odd coincidence considering that Mitzi and Yumiko have been BFFs since the 2nd Grade is something I want to keep. I really *really* wanted to foreclose any chance of Z and Mitzi even having the possibility of triangulation between them and Yumiko. All three are family, Yumi by marriage. When Z and Yumiko have kids (not to happen for a long time in the storyline, maybe just shown in flash-forward) she will be their cousin too. And she's now part of Namiko's family as well. Considering what has gone down and is yet to go down she needs all the supportive family she can get.
May I add that it is amazing that I have found muses that are 2 ft. tall (well Namiko's shorter) and weigh only a Kg each. They've become my muses. Wow.
Oh damn, I forgot the verbiage they want...I'm probably disqualified but I will add it to the top. (headdesk)
