What Stops You From Being Evil?

Last week, I posted a question/article on Anime Super Powers You Wish You Had. It was much more focused on the psychological insecurities of high school life and the fantasies we use to cope with our problems.

The responses were very interesting, ranging from the typical Super Saiyan type powers to some truly unique stuff that delved into people's complexes and psyches.

What did strike me though, was the high amount of "violent" type super powers. Things that had to do with killing, physical damage, and otherwise inflicting pain on others.

EDIT: I've had to re-phrase the question, because I don't think it's clear enough on what I was asking...
So my question this week is:
Look deep inside you. If nothing can stop you from doing what you want to do, would you do it? What would you do? This isn't so much of having super powers or not anymore, but more that these super powers are able to free you from society's restriction and moral code.

Basically, Would you go all Tetsuo on everyone?

I'd like to explore the inner psychology of this and how society affects your decision too. Would you be more inclined to cause crimes if you were unstoppable? Are social moral chains holding you back from doing whatever you want? Are you not going out to commit crimes because you know you'll get caught? Or because you actually are a good person at heart?

well... psychological wise, i think it will go with the hype of the person is thinking.. like atm i wish i can do Unlimited Blade Works to defend against villains...

ofcoz... villains (like fantasy worlds) dont exists in what we see (it might actually exists who noe) so then.. probably to have the skill but do nothing but waiting for arrival of an arch enemy

So then is that to say that having super powers is useless if you can't use it to destroy evil villains?

Say that I have Esper powers/abilities. Can easily use it for destructive violent easily.
People recieving the pain would mostly be bad people. Well, my judgement of bad.

Sometimes, good people may get injured due to our rage. Fire over our eyes will sway our objectives.

I don't think 'good' or 'bad' exist. It all depends on the person.
But if I had to choose, I would go with 'good'. 'Bad' is more fun, but you always end up getting caught.

That's kinda interesting to hear. The temptation to cause damage is pretty seductive.
Just the feeling of unrivaled power in your hands and that everyone has to bow to you.

Or that you can judge who lives and who dies.

Even if you didn't have super powers but were put in a position that allowed you to make those kinds of choices, it seems like you're a person that would take it.

Don't ever run for election. We would all be doomed. ;)

take for the example of the law restricts you to drive without a license.

I like your response too! You seem like a person who'd maintain strict control over your powers and use it for whatever needs to be done.

But then that brings the question : what would you like to do? What would you most desire? And how would you use your powers to achieve that?

or perhaps that the concept of "free will" actually doesn't exist, and we're all just acting on chemical reactions.

free will is what makes us humans, humans who defy our nature that separates us from animals. though the temptations of what is natural lurks within us, it also depends on the composition of these chemicals. like for saying a person who lived a life of crime is filled with these chemicals, a sub-genre of these crimes produces sub genres of chemicals that leads to different compositions that affects one's physical that eventually affects the mental aspects. that is why some bad people are consumed by what is evil, and why some are taken out of darkness. vice versa to people who are not born from the world of darkness. in the end, it is up to us to give in or not to these compositions that affects our body and mind. you know, like when you feel very angry, and you suppress your anger? depending on your outlook in life, you have a way to exhaust this suppressed anger with just mental manipulations or you could let it all out at an appropriate time and place. er... this is taking too long to explain, i'll just leave it to your feedback.

First off, when dealing with the question, how would one go about defining pain? Would pain mean physical pain (death/injury) or would emotional pain (loss of property, dignity, etc...) count as well?

Most of the time, our actions are restricted and governed by our fear of having to live with the consequences, be it knowing that someone could get hurt, getting thrown in jail, causing the destabilization of society, etc...

My ideal choice of powers are:

    - Time Manipulation
    - Invisibility
    - Teleportation
    - Mind Control
    - Mind Reading
    - Morphing
    - Reality Manipulation

These would allow me to control/alter/manipulate things from behind the scenes without notice.

Would I use these powers selfishly for my own enjoyment and pleasure at the expense of others? Definitely.

Why? Because having these powers would mean that it would be exceedingly easy for me to avoid any consequences that directly or indirectly result from my actions.

Robbing others, exploiting others, embarrassing others, for purposes of obtaining material wealth, to get revenge or to even act out my own most perverted fantasies.

To avoid any consequences, I could jump back in time, teleport away, erase memories, change identity, so on and so forth.

Not only that, notice that the 'pain' that I would cause others is only on a smaller scale which is practically trivial compared to the physical pain that is caused by wanton destruction.

For me, I don't want my current lifestyle to change in the slightest as I am exceedingly contented with the way things are and I wouldn't want to rock the boat too much.

BUT!!! If I had chosen a more destructive and violent super power like Super Strength and Fire Manipulation, which, when used selfishly, more often than not would cause harm to others in a very flamboyant way like mass destruction, blatant murder, rampaging through cities, etc... I would not use these powers for anything evil.

Again, it boils down to consequences. I do not want to have someone's death on my conscience. Not to mention, other grievous consequences that this would entail include fear, aggressive resistance, mass panic and chaos which is also too much for me to handle.

So in conclusion, given the chance, would I cause pain to others? Definitely. But only I'm sure that there will not be any consequences and that the pain caused is relatively minor and contained.

Yours is the type of answer I'm looking for.

Deep down inside, are we the type of person who stands down simply because of the consequences and punishment we will receive? Or do we stand down because of our own moral compass?

Basically, if you can get away with murder guaranteed, would you murder? Would you be able to live with it afterward? And if so, then does that mean you don't murder because of the consequences?

It's interesting to know your psyche, Actar! :)

I think for myself personally, I would not be able to live with the emotional consequences of having hurt someone. I think I might be okay with stealing, but definitely not inflicting pain.

The temptation of unrivaled power to punish others whom I think deserve it is very tempting though. I can see why Light Yagami turned into what he did because of it.

But do you really have to though? Do you believe that there is always another option? One that may be more difficult or time consuming? Would you take the easy solution and kill? Or would you attempt to find another solution? Given that you have almighty power, would you abuse it?

can you answer the question that you'd still be a saiyan regardless these people hurt you or not? i mean, when you play a video game, and messed up in the first part, but obtained a very very veeeery rare item at some point that is very very veeeeeeery impossible to obtain again if you repeat the game, you save it right? playing the game again with everything right and getting that rare item is another story, that is why it's called "New Game" like a "New Person" that is not you, or an alternate you which is not the you in the first place.

kinda like the song Deo Gracias.

symbolically speaking, there is no salvation if not man ate the fruit.

it just goes to say that knowledge is a burden that is inevitable to humans, but having knowledge also leads us to discovering on how to deal with the burden.

Hard to say, what sort of powers we talking about here?

If i were immortal and omnipotent as a god-like entity, with the forces of the universe bending to my will then even the mindless selfish adoration I can get from the masses along with the joy of slaughtering countless billions can get boring after a while.

Then again, if i did have those powers then I cease to be human and no longer need to abide by "human" morals or what society dictates since I'd be waaaay above it. Humanity would just be a plaything and like children we can either take care of our toys; or abuse them, get bored and move on to the next shiny thing. So the short of it would probably be, yes >:D

This is an interesting thought experiment and raises within me questions about the nature of so called "gods", supreme beings or whatever.

hmmmm... was thinking... i incorrectly understood the verse "The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge." as something like God's fear is man's discovery and realization. kinda like how adam and eve ate the fruit that God forbids them.

okay okay, going back in line. i think what is godly is something that is beyond our understanding or even has factors of consciousness that is inapplicable to human consciousness. and by doing so will just make us insane. like when you collide two objects together and make a sound? depending on the objects' properties, collision surface and whatsoever. it creates a different sound. now, if we replace the word "sound" into something like "universe", i was thinking, the universe is something that is definite to happen as a result from an action, whether is is an accident or not. kinda like when you intentionally clap your hands or when your hand just slams into somebody else's face.

kinda like the big bang theory. rather than a large explosion that created space and time. i think what we have not is actually the explosion rather than a result of the explosion that created space and time. though it may look like the universe existed for millenniums. it may be something as simple as flushing a toilet bowl for something else that is unheard of.

Ooh that's a good analogy - gods with their toys! This is essentially it, isn't it? And yeah, I suppose one would get bored after a while too.

But then how does this affect one's moral conscience if you're able to be like Hollow Man or Tetsuo?

Would one REALLY be so noble like Superman and not try to take over the planet?

actually, superman has his own demons to deal with. that depends on the power. i mean, such godly power must come from a godly knowledge. it's not like the movie bruce almighty where one retains their human consciousness at receiving godly powers. the knowledge of the heavens, it either drives one mad or peaks one to enlightenment. being mad or enlightened tears you off from humanity's standards and that your way of thinking is neither corrupt nor virtuous anymore, but something that is absolute natural, or should i say, neutral.

i'd like to manipulate time even for a few split seconds. i like to have technical and mystic knowledge to create things out of magic and machines so that it will create a link from reality and fantasy (like how a cathode ray tube TV is once a magic box of moving pictures, maybe someday we'll understand how gravity works). i like to make people sleep if things go ugly. i like to give life to inanimate objects based from their memories based from their experience from the time they were created. i like to have a counterspell that reflects a person's deeds through channeling the emotional and psychological feedback of the individuals that involved their deeds. i like to have an ability to mimic the appearance of another person. i like to harness the power of electro-magnetic waves and frost vapors and see how the two elements work together. i like to exorcise demons that hasn't attained a worldly form and the ability to slay and send them back if ever they did. i like to create doubles (at least four of them) to help me do the things i do. i like to be able to cast an n-field aside from controlling time. i like to compress my stuff in cards and summons them anytime at my will. i like to null other special abilities in my presence at a range. (like their powers won't work when they're near me. or they can't detect me if they have super-senses or not able to read my mind if they're psychic). i hate flying, i hate becoming wild and i hate burning stuff. basically, good and evil is something i overlook as long as they're not in opposition of my quest of self-discovery.

well, not really. take nero's devil arm or vash the stampede being a sentient plant for example. i do not think that their power corrupted them. take leiot steinberg or hellsing's alucard. their powers are a curse and wished that someday they'll be free from it.

That scenario might happen if only 1 person has superpowers. Others are helpless when confronted with this kind of being. Again, just like I said, power corrupts. However, if there are a number of people have superpowers, there will be a change. There will be no superbeing misusing his/her powers without the retaliation from other superbeings. Just like the concept of check & balance. This concept will keep the peace and might help to stop wanton display of powers upon the non-superbeings. Or maybe we need a council of public peace, manned by superbeings to control the superbeings. In that way, Tetsuo-like people might have to think twice if they want to berserk.

Yeah, it's embarrassing to be beaten by a nobody but it's a good blow to my over-inflated ego. Nothing beats a humbling experience like that. Been through that kind of thing many times already, I mean in real life, of course.

Somehow, I found my answer to what stops me from being that dastardly evil: the knowledge of someone will eventually beat me. i need to stay at the top of the power chain and if i want to stay, stay in control. then no one will go "beat the evil one" on me. hopefully LOL

i guess you really conjoined strength (or power) with evil.

The big problem is that people are complex. We all have our darker sides, and I know that for some, the temptation to do evil with powers would be there. But most people who are good suppress that dark side, while others deny that it's even there. Having studied the various forms of meditation, I know my dark side. Hell, it talks to me almost every day. I would define myself as a generally good person, who would use powers mostly for defense. But there are a few people who, if I was given the chance, I would blow them to tiny chunks of protoplasm. Maybe an evil act, especially unprovoked, but I have reasons.

I'm under the same belief that EVERYONE has a dark side. EVERYONE can be brought to corruption and evil. It's only a matter of what will trigger it.

I was hoping that this little thought exercise would get people to look into themselves and see if that evil is there or not.

Good to know that you found your answer and have taken measures to control it. :)

If I could do as I please and wreak havoc would I? The plain answer is no if it involves the lives of the general public, it's a whole different story if its to blow something up w/o harming anyone.

I think I might have a bit of an inclination to wreak that much havoc if it could be easily returned back to normal, like it didn't happen at all.

Seriously, in the balanced combination of applied perception, reason and compassion: tends to restrain one for excess. Of course, it does not mean that one won't resort to the extreme, if the that is what is clearly needful, moral judgement of others be damned. "Evil" is often in the eye of the beholder, after all. I think my own moral code would prevent me from going nuts, and besides that I can't think of anyone from my own personal life that I'd feel inclined to go and "teach a lesson". Not everyone in life has been kind to me, sure, but I've never really harboured hatred towards anyone. I doubt I'd turn to crime either, again due to my own morals and conscience. I don't think I'd do it just because I could if I got powered-up - I would still think it's wrong.

If I suddenly had great power, I think these would be the possible outcomes:
    1) Do nothing of great consequence. Maybe go out into empty spaces and play around with the powers, but avoid having anyone else find out.
    2) Use them like a magician's trick to make money.
    3) Use them to help people. How exactly would depend on the powers, but this could be anything up to becoming a vigilante a la Spider-Man et al.

That last one, of course, doesn't have to be as noble as we usually like to think. There are inherent problems as well as benefits with vigilantes (and being one), and in a world without supervillains a superhero might be overkill (possibly literally). It also extends into the Light Yagami/Lelouch vi Britannia frame of mind at its extreme, in which the ends justify the means no matter what the cost. If I WAS to go mad with power, I think that would be how: not a super-powered tantrum, but an attempt to make the world a better place gone way too far.

      oooh! :D

But I'm not sure I believe your kind heart is genuine. I think I have seen too much of our human race to believe that if one is given power, that they would not abuse it.

Even so called philanthropists can't be trusted at times. I mean, the owner of Salvation Army is LOADED with money, and apparently isn't a very nice person either.

I can't see myself killing others, or causing too much pain to someone without feeling bad. But I certainly wouldn't hesitate to commit petty crimes, or even grand theft if I am guaranteed no consequences placed on me.

I guess then it depends on the degree of how much suffering for others you're willing to let sacrifice for your own selfish gains.

At the same time, I do see your point of making the world a better place. I look at it, and feel like I'm part of this rat-race where everyone else is in the same suffering position as me. I question "Is this what life is truly about? Working my ass off 9-5 and only getting a small amount of freedom to enjoy?" I suppose if I was given the opportunity to free people from that, I would.

I didn't say I wouldn't abuse the power - number two on my list of possible outcomes could constitute an abuse - just that I wouldn't harm innocents or become a criminal. It's not about having a kind heart so much as a certain kind of morals. The reason I'm not a criminal - let's say, a thief - now is not because I can't get away with it nor just because the law says it's wrong, but because I think it's wrong. I don't believe that would change if I could suddenly get away with it, it's deeply ingrained. Besides - again, going back to number two on that list - there are more lawful (if potentially unscrupulous) means of making money out of super powers.

Keep in mind that reference I made to Light Yagami (or even Lelouch) as well. He had admirable intentions, but his methods became increasingly harsh as he became more and more single-minded about achieving his goals at any cost. I think that behaviour stemmed from a very similar concept of morality as what I've described as my own. There are plenty of ways to end up on a power trip that don't start with crime or "evil".

wow, that's pretty cool to hear then that having powers (or simply put, getting away with crime) won't change your moral compass.

I'd like to believe that it wouldn't change me either, but I'm not 100% sure of myself. I think power would corrupt me. I feel it in my heart. I know that committing crimes, whether I can get away with it or not, is wrong, but my selfishness makes me think that as long as I'm not causing physical harm, I'd be okay with it, and the only thing really stopping me is the law.

When I had thought about "What if I had super powers?" it allowed me to search deep in myself to find my moral compass, which was why I had asked the question here too. It makes me fear myself in a way. Who knows though? Maybe if I did commit a crime and got away with it, I would feel bad about it.

It's true there are definitely plenty of ways to go on a power trip that have nothing to do with crime, evil, or super powers. :)

BTW, the magic tricks idea had come to my mind before too. it would be pretty cool. :)

if you ask me, an unfavorable power is something one must use as a last resort and not how spam-happy yagami used it. i've turned down a lot of things if they are not in sync with my way of life. so many that i've lost count, regrets are for losers who will never become strong. life is never easy, that is why there is a sying that goes "do not pray for an easy life, pray to be a strong person."

I can understand exactly what you meant.
Now sometimes, even people who dont have power can do things like lelouch and light.
But you can judge by their character. Light never cared lelouch cared. Now, wars happen because it was conspired.
Personal wars happen because of a reason. If it is done with the cost of lives it wont be even half the battle to judge one's actions. I sometimes think by punishing crooks but sparing their lives in order to see the errors and live their consequences will I be different them?

Personally, I believe I might but in the objective eyes I'm not.

Who does not give in to power knowing no consequences?
In reality no one. We all wanted to be at the top without falling into the depths of punishment and consequences and take everything without giving unless partnered with benefit greater than loss. *Dont lie to whoever reads this* That is human nature after all. We humans with no exceptions are greedy, teritorial, and conquering by nature. I really agree with your question that if you went all out knowing no bounds can stop you you give in.

But what keeps me away from being evil? *And a what if for me*
    1. Other people who are born less fortunate.
We sometimes *for me all the time* take things for granted. While we rest in comfort of our own home tucked in our blanket that keeps us safe, secure, and warm we sometimes forget of others who had less or nothing at all and are all alone in the cold and dark world. Think of them and help them even in little things because it means something to them. In reality kindness does not change things unless you help yourself. But in doing so, you might help them help themselves.

2.People who underwent the same tragedy as you have.
I never did had any personal flunks but heres what atleast seen in tv. Some people who suffered personal tragedy often help themselves but when they see others who went the same ordeal as themselves they tend to help out because they know how it felt like.
Sometimes we feel that we lost something when something bad happened to us. The only way to get it back is to help them gain back theirs. In reality, there's nothing to gain back and must be dealt with. Other people dont concern you.

3.People who never had the means.
Back when i was unemployed a man helped me when I never had the means. Now thanks to him, I now have. I'm still living with my parents along with my brothers but ATLEAST I helped but I know I never did much. In reality, people expect you to give something back in return. But by paying forward and hoping that you can payback the one who gave you the means, the fulfillment and desire is endless.

    4.Children
Although I have no care for children, By seeing them gives you a smile but seeing children with less fortune makes you want to help them. They are wildcards that must be taken cared of for our future. Discarding them means giving your soul to the devil and no longer be considered human. In reality, children are a nuisances and must be taught about the harshness of life for them to learn. But by caring and nuturing you can be a model for the child.

    5.Family and home
Now, without family we have nowhere to return to. Everytime you go home, who waits for your safe return? Who do we draw strength to fight for another day? Without a family theres no home to return to. In reality, we all live alone and someday we will. But by valuing them, we can feel like we can tackle the world as long as there's a family and a home to comeback with.

Lastly, Nobody's perfect. We can't be perfect no matter how we try. Our shadow will always be there to drag us down. But why? Now imagine if our shadow just materialized itself attacking you, your family and your friends and killing in the process. Again, why? Because we have not yet accepted our shadows and live in the truth. Now which will you choose, feeding your insecurities with selfish vices or your loved ones? Ofcourse a lot will choose their loved one because there's a monster about to kill you and others. Now think of now, which will you choose cage or freedom? The choice is yours. Besides you will reap what you sow. By accepting your weakness can you be strong and you can be able to do the things I just mentioned or even better, MORE!

I went a little over board again but it felt great. Here's a bowl of gyoza.
Oh and some music to get what I meant to this long and grueling comment.

well i never liked power, never liked the responsibility behind it.

i never understand people who craved something for nothing.

life in reality is hard, regardless of status. there are no less fortunate or more fortunate.

for every action has an opposite and equal reaction. kindness should be shared to everyone and not only to those whom society thinks as less fortunate.

means? you mean purpose? "the purpose of life is a life of purpose" i always say^^ i help people on a whim, never expected to receive something in return. if ever i am expecting something, i'll be expecting trouble (this one's more on subjective but don't mind it)

i somehow lack the sympathy to people who underwent the same problem as i have. i mean, the are a lot of factors that can result to a somewhat similar problems but these varieties can either polish you up or grind you down. in a nutshell, everybody has their own sad stories, having someone who has similar problems like yours doesn't make you or them any special attention to others.

er... about children... if you ask me, do not underestimate the capabilities of a child. treat them as equals understand them rather than teaching them so that they will learn to understand you and the rest of the world.

ah love... the greatest joy and the strongest sorrow...

i don't know about vices (well if you count figure collecting as a vice, then i have one now)
i never understand how vices works. but seriously, i bought articulated figures so that i can have models for my drawings (nendos are my vices).

i write or draw or sculpt at my spare time (watching anime is binded with dinnertime, so not a spare time). occasionally go out with friends. almost busy 24/7 (maybe that's why i'm weird)

well, don't get me wrong, i'm not er.. bashing(didn't even know there's a different meaning to this) either^^ i'm just a minority trying to grasp this society's understanding of... stuff.

i'll get to that song as soon as i get some earphones^^
