Red Spider Lily (彼岸花)

Posted by Haku1923 [www]

The name higanbana (彼岸花) is derived from the season it blooms in which is usually around the week of autumn equinox holiday (秋の彼岸). It has also been suggested that the name comes from the saying that says those who dare eat them will only face death (彼岸).

Mouseover = load notes.

However, Manju-shuge (曼珠沙華) which is another name for higanbana, coming from the Buddhist scriptures are depicted to be white in color and are considered to be a soft heavenly flower.

Mouseover = load notes.

……A white heavenly flower…
Now why does that sound familiar?^^;

Speaking of Red spider Lilies, my Enma Ai figure lost her Waraninngyou ToT

Anybody lose their’s?

      Somehow Sora seems like a personification of the higanbana since she sorta fits the description of a "white heavenly flower" ^^;

    I really love these flowers. I first saw them on the ending for Inuyasha and always wondered what they were. I was finally given some bulbs by my dad and now I have around 15 of them planted out front. And where I am from, these are called hurricane Lilies due to them blooming at the height of the hurricane season here. It's nice to know their real name. Unfortunately, I was in Japan when they were in full bloom so I missed the chance to pose Manami with them this year.

    But I am glad Sora got to pose with some! She looks great and it's a nice contrast too. When I visited the Imperial gardens in Tokyo, they actually had red ones AND white ones! I never knew there were white versions of these, they were really cool looking.

    As always, good to see Sora having fun!

      Me too^^ Well, not from the beginning though. After seeing them in Jigoku Shoujo and finding out what they represent I grew more and more attracted to it and thus my HP adress, Lycoris radiata, which is scientific name for the red spider lily^^; Hurricane Lilies. Yeah I think that's what they called in the state I came from too:)
      Oh, well maybe better luck next year with her new sisters^^

      White ones are pretty rare I heard and am jealous that you got to see them! rarrgh....
      hehe, thanks~^^

        I had never heard of white ones until I saw them growing in the Imperial Residence gardens in Tokyo. They were very cool looking and now I want to find some to plant here at home.

        Yes, I'll have to wait until next year to get pics with the girls but it will be worth the wait! :)
