how much do you spend a year?
Just looking at the invoices scares me :P and that dosen't even include over $300 from mandarake, $700~ from chuck's anime, ~$50 from amiami, and some other places that doesn't provide an invoices (mostly ebay) and invoices that I can't find. I think Im up to around $2.2k for the past 8months or so :P and looks like will continue and just be more and more each year. biggest problem is that, I filled a whole 6ft bookcase with these stuff that I don't even know where to put new stuff I buy anymore~~ over $1,200 in K-on items alone~~ first item (3rd figure I bought) is the first I bought from official distributor (Hobby Search) was only since late June of this year right before I went on vacation, and now I got ~20 or so and more to come every month o_o
when do you think you will stop buying?

Just started collecting a year ago ( yeah its just a year ) and i paid more than 5000$ on this new hobby =__= ( nearly half of it go to expensive shipping EMS and hard ax though ). Now im trying to slow down lol ^__^.
sorry, i mean "tax"
heehee Im cheap I can only afford SAL :P
and Im glad I live in USA where there isn't a duty tax on package :P
It's best not to think of such things....lol;)
Precisely!
I agree >_<
I try to avoid thinking about it as much as possible, just pay the bill and leave it at that...
started last July, current damage is 3600$, damn the shipping fee T_T
just gotta deal with it :P
my may envy that japanese otaku don't have to pay the hefty shipping. But they also make less (on avg) and has higher living expense (on avg) then we do :P
so it balanaces.
on avg it costs about 700-1000yen for SAL a small to midium size figure. and around 1580-2080 for EMS, which is why I just can't afford EMS~
yeah, and im getting worried with my Nov order from amiami, 15 figures + 5 nendos. so shipping will be like +/-300$ T_T, good thing we don't pay custom taxes here in US though
shipping is not fun ~
nod nod the shipping just killing ppl who living outside JP. It is like the cost for another figure. ><
japanese makes less then we do :P
so it balances~
and Call of Duty Black ops costs about ~$85 in japan lol
Started this summer. Damage report exceeds $1000 (thankfully) although I do not know where I got that money from. D:
Ahhh the harsh reality check lol i do think that we are all in the same boat :p
Well, figures alone, maybe like around $50... all the other merch i think takes me to around $430. And, I'd spend more if I didn't just bankrupt myself til January when I get financial aid again. I literally bought anime merch til I couldn't afford to eat anymore. :P ._.
lol UTSA financial aid xD
can't wait for mine :P
I think I would have few hundreds $ over the cost of tuition :P
trying to get my gpa to 3.25 (currently 3.08) so I can possibly get more~
grading system should be broken down into more like A+ A A- B+ B B- etc.
A is not easy, but B is very easy.
and most all my classes happens to get 87-88 or so xD right now I have
87,88,88,96,97 in the five classes I have, but unfortunately that would be B,B,B,A,A...
Oh god I hope they don't pass the plus minus system. My gpa is low as it is ._. ... i should start trying harder. Last I checked my gpa was like 2.5 ._.
Crap, I didn't think about the gpa affecting financial aid. Needa try harder.
the A+ A- system would actually make GPA higher
because a B- (80-82) is a 3.0
where right now a B (80-89) is a 3.0
the only difference really that would bring it lower is that 92-100 = 4.0
90-91 = 3.8
instead of 90-100 = 4.0
really? I thought it was different.
I just got more loot... it's depressing cause it's reminding me why im broke in the first place :P
loot is good :P
and tastes delicious~
NO! :P YOU CAN NOT EAT A PILLOWCASE. AND I DO NOT WANNA EAT RITSU (well... that's a different conversation :P).
Just can't wait til January.
lol maybe YOU don't want to eat ritsu, but I wanna take a bite :P
me neither~
if it goes as planned, I should have about ~$800 above tuition
hehe well not of the figure, but her, yes.
only 800 in FA? I barely survived with like 4500, then again i pay rent and groceries.
oh no no, $800 Above the tuition~
I got $5400 FA for this semester and $5400 for next
Ohhhh. Thats how much I got last year. Idk what happened this year =(.
Lucky! :p
What year are you in?
I am in 2nd yr, how bout you :P
I hope I don't get less next yr~
2nd year too actually.
lol haha~
last Yr I got about the same as this year :P I hope next year will be same or more x]
do you live on campus?
I live off-campus. I find on-campus housing lil bit too crappy. Although there certainly is an advantage of convenience living on campus. I might have to when I am senior or maybe when I attempt my Masters. Since Convenience would be necessary :P and I assume you live on-campus? :P
god no! lol i live on campus with some friends from back home but, if you've ever heard the saying "don't move in with your friends" its true. I plan to move on my own in july. Hopefully, I'll have a job so I can afford to do so.
Anyways i'll stop spamming your topic. you got msn?
Im using meebo but if you tell me yours I can add ya~
oblivion_spektrum@hotmail.com
yeah skittlecake@hotmail.com
was made like 8yrs ago while I was eating skittles xD
I started this collecting hobby ages ago, and while initially, there was no way for me to afford the expenditure as a student along with my other hobbies(at that point, I was limited to just comics, mooks, and the occasional figure every 9-12 months). Ever since I've been working though, the collecting hobby has gonna snowballed out of control until recently. Not to say I've quit cold turkey, but I'm running out of space to store all my wares(and honestly, I should probably sell some of it to make space...) in my apartment, and really have needed to dial it back.
Honest truth is, either you'll get bored of collecting things, or you realize you've got other things you want to do with your hobby money, or run out of room/patience(from those close to you, rather than from yourself most likely), and cut back, or stop. Not to say that doesn't mean you'll stop wanting new stuff, but that there won't be room/budget for it anymore~
Yeah i know what you mean i stopped collecting for years ... I got bored and started to run out of space .... so my nee motto is sale and buy it save money and space
ya I can understand collecting hobbies can be very tough in HK... space space and more space
Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, all small space unless you are rich....
land costs like it's NYC :P
oh man. can i include trips to japan? i'm well over 6 grand in that case
I always throw away those receipts immediately and try not to calculate :D
I see, running away from the truth, huh?
makes yourself feel better :P
I shred mine lol. But I do have an estimate, which I am not going to list ^^;
you can shred receipt but you can't shred credit card debts xD
What if you have no CC debts? ^^
lol then start buying like you never bought before xD
I save all my receipts but I am scared to calculate everything. I don't save receipts from cons which is where I get most of my gunpla, figmas and figures. Anime Expo and San Diego Comic Con in one month is killer.
Ah I probably have spent around ~$700 so far. Just recently decided to start using SAL since EMS was just too much to handle.
Too much. I checked my preorders and it's like £400 until February. Still it's worth it! (^-^)/
definitely :P
from now till feb. I have about ~$500 or so~
from now until and including feb i have £700/$1100 worth of pre-orders, not including shipping, any spontaneous buys or the dollfie i just ordered from mandarake but havn't paid for yet... oopsie ^____^
nice lol :P
my first year 03/2010 to 03/2011
should be real close to $3000 or so :P
and I think it is alot for a college student (with no job) xD
this is my first real year of spending on anime ^___^ i only work part time though ): how did you manage to spend so much when you don't work? :O
its totally magic x)
money drops from the sky~
i wish ):
Since I start from last year 2009,..until now I think I have spent nearly SGD 2000...T_T on CDs, PVCs, Nendos, Figmas, magazines, artbooks...xD
I tend to save all my receipts but I think I lost some of them.
books, magazines, comics etc I buy but refuse to open :P
but then again, its just a pretty piece of brick without opening
so I don't buy much of those (except manga) cuz they are cheap.
xD I do open them to see what's new, or maybe there's some hidden treasure inside :X
definately fun to open xD
but would lose interest after 5min of opening lol
more than $10kAUD easily what with me regularly importing Japanese R2Js and Blu-rays in addition to other merch like figures, CDs, artbook and other random things.
you buy alot of cd/dvd/blu-rays haha xD
nice to have a full set, but $400-$700 a set I just can't handle, so media-wise, I buy one here and there occasionally only~
I can understand that. Thing is I don't buy much merch like figures or artbooks outside of Shana or Kara no Kyoukai and it's really only those two series that I put my main focus on (and to an extent, Clannad as well I guess) since I'm not really interested in collecting merch for any other series (other than maybe its CD releases). I guess that's why I'm able to buy a lot of official Japanese anime DVDs and BDs.
I see :P
certainly alot easier to store then bunch of big boxes :P
Clannad is a really nice serie, little bit sad though~
Shana is just a mean lil loli flame haze :P
10K a year is quite a bit though :P I hope I won't reach that much xD
AUD is pretty much par with USD now~
Including shipping and all my preorders up to the end of this month, I've spent... $716.18. Not too bad, considering I ordered 7 ALTER figures and 5 Nendoroids.
I definitely plan on slowing down next year.
lol I don't keep mine numbers THAT precised :P
I just use the MFC budget manager. It's a really convenient tool to keep track of your figure orders, etc.
yeah, I could use excel and calculate easy too :P but I didn't keep track for the first few months until I start buying constantly xD and forget the exact amounts of many things x)
I started collecting Nendos in July an now im up to 32 at about $40 each average that's only $1200 maybe $1300 and I have sold a lot of old figures about $600 worth to help buy more Nendos ...... its easy to spend a lot bit I just buy only what I want and if its at a good price collecting is fun as long as it doesn't become obsession ....... then all your money is gone ... I'm only collecting Nendos from now and i only buy what I like
it's ok :P money can be re-earned one way or another~
Nendos are cute tho :P
Didn't count, don't want to imagine... well, picture =1000 words
late 2009 http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/23054
late 2010 http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/124240
nice case :P
and I like that yami-chan~
those things certainly don't come cheap~
Lets see, every since i was very young, I was into model building (Gundams, Other Mechs, Fighter Jets, Battle ships, Street/Race cars of all scales)... later got into garage kits (real and copies), then came collection PVCs, and recently Nendos, Revolvetechs and Figmas, all kinds of ther animation goods, 5 TB worth of storage space for all my animations and music. And finally started Dollfie Dreams last month. NO WAY IN HELL I can find out how much I spent... but Dollfie Dream alone I have probably spent over 6k.. not including the Saber Lily to come.
5 digit spender :P let me know when you get into 6~~ keywords
"started last month" Dollfie Dream alone spent over 6K"
storage space are becoming really cheap now. I bought a 2.5" 640gb for my laptop for $50~
which is the biggest I need for now since my anime stuff only takes lil more then 200gb right now~
Now....if all 5tb worth of your animation and musics were legally purchased, that would be impressive :P
Well, tell you the truth, if they would put chinese subtitles in animation, I would be all over them in a heartbeat... so I'm stuck with downloaded versions, but for titles such as the recent Unicorn Gundam, black rock shooter, Eva 1.11 & 2.22, where they offer Chinese subs, I have bought the BD (^^)
I only watch Chinese subs :P don't really like English sub at all. When it gets translated to English, alot of time, actual meaning becomes way off.I really can't afford $70-90 per volume either :P. but I did buy from Kingstone when I was in Taiwan. prices is about 450NT ($15~) for 3episode.
http://www.kingstone.com.tw/av/book_page.asp?LID=se008&kmcode=2090220419728&Actid=wise&partner=
much more affordable and is licensed thou not the original :P
For me, the question is probably more "when will I start buying." ^^; I mean, yeah, I did manage to get a DD using money from gifts, but that was only possible because I haven't bought any figures since Christmas 2008. Even with the doll purchases I'm holding back; I'm making her clothes instead of buying them, most of her props I either made myself or lucked out at the thrift store, and she still has no shoes. ^^; Looking forward to being out of school and actually having money for fun stuff for a change. . .
I spent.... an obscene sum. '(^_^)_
just think how much food you can buy with that
So my hobby keeps me thin: no great problem. (^_^)
Started about 3 months before you, in March.
To date I've spent about $1400, not including pre-orders, which if included would equal about $2000.
Hmmm. Quite a bit but as a lot of people have said, best not to think about it. But with that being said I think one should enjoy their hobby as best as they can, life is short afterall
will be even shorter when you can't pay for surgery because you spent it all on hobby xD
Lol. That's what insurance is for. But of course I would never recommend spending all your money on Anime. But if you have money to spare I think you should spoil yourself (within reason)
life isn't infinite, enjoy it while you can :P
Hmm thinking back over the many years I'd have to say probably around $6000 a year AUD. Its all retail therapy so in my eyes its a good investment.
until you run out of room :P
True that. I manage for the moment by being pretty selective about my purchases so I only get perhaps one PVC a month, a few nendo's and small things like pencil boards / A3 mats. I intend to to remodel my room and buy a bunch of glass cabinets, which will solve any space issues for a few years to come.
i am at 2,500 in 2 months i just started to collected figures
lol.....have fun keeping up at it :P
will do until i go broke or run out of space lol
bigger house is always a solution ^^;
I'd rather not know tbh >.<
I keep telling myself I am going to spend less next month
and end up spending more lol
Heh I was just calculating this a few days ago and just for this year I spent 5600+USD. Now the real question is how much more of that could of been figures if I wasn't impatient and went for Sal instead of EMS. Hopefully next year I won't spend as much>_<.
could probably have saved hundreds :P
I started collecting way way WAYY back my first gundam figure when i was like 1997? but only started ordering figures when i discovered hlj in 2000? but even then it be once in awhile.
ONLY till like last year around the same time as now i started to go nuts. since last year november i have bought 4 Dollfies and have had 500-700 doller loots every month till now went to japan soo if i had to guess my dd costed mashiro ( 1300 ) rin ( 1200 ) yuki ( 1250 ) mio ( 600 ) about 15 volks outfits and shoes, variety of wigs ( unknown cost ) monthly figure spendings 650 avg x 12 would be about 14XXX AUD minimum.
wow thats alot ... i should cut back
cuz anime last decade didn't focus on cute girls :P
and no cute girl = few figures available :P
and lol :P soon enough you'll need a bigger house
Well simnce reading this post i went and found the folder i keep all my invoices for Anime and figures in....
That was a bad move in 8 months ive spent just over £11,000 on Daki's' bathposters, dvds, manga and figures. Sad thing is i think the Blu-ra Dvds equate to atleast 1/3rd of that its like £30-60 an episode (I like the limited Ed. ones)
so uh yeah hate to see what it ends up at on months 12 :(
lol heavy spender xD
Shipping is a bitch to the Uk so that doesnt help ><
Just thought this doesnt include any customs i had to pay .... i must cut down and need some figure cabinets as i ran out of space ages ago and there just pilling up in my spare bedrooms :)
come live in USA and customs problem becomes no problem xD
at least you have bunch of goodies to accompany you :P
Haha yeah lucky bastard over there :)
Isnt it classed as a toy so no charges ?
I suppose the reason i buy so much is i earn more than i can spend at the age of 20 :) Full time job + any overtime i like = win
Chucks Anime is that an american site ?
yeah chuck's anime is based in NY. I buy from him because his prices are cheaper (most time even then amiami) (He buys in shipments of 300,000yen at a time) and no worry about damaged shipment since packages are damaged on the other-side of the world :P domestically, even minimal packaging would be sufficient.
and I even asked him about if he has to pay customs and he said one once out of like a hundred. and his shipments are like near $4k each :P
----------
Im just glad I can buy what I can having no job, and goes to college~ book money becomes figure money haha~
Ahh sounds like a nice little business he's got going on their, i suppose buying in bulk has its benefits and means nice prices for you as you dont have to pay some large shipping cost from japan.
Customs obviously arent as mad as they are over here once they charged my £60 customs charge for something i bought for £20 becuase they thought its value was higher than what was marked, needles to say i won the dispute :P but still over here they seem to be really picky.
Ahh your a student, thats must make it hard having to pick and choose which figures to buy dunno how i would manage as if i like it i just buy it :P Call me nuts but hey :)
well not really, money is no issue (If I want it, Ill buy it, right there and then), more about not over-crowding myself with it :P
my budget still allows half a grand for the next few month (after I pay my $300 order to chuck) :P
must suck to have to pay customs on everything xD
Figures and doujin are my most expensive part of the anime hobby; I don't keep the invoices but I can safely assume I've spent a little less than 10 thousand in both.
If you're really concerned about your finances, I think it's time for your cropping phase in the hobby ^^ which means selling what you really don't want anymore, and start thinking more about your future purchases. I've saved a ton of money by suppressing my impulse-buy urges and only focus on what I really want. It's hard, but for example now I realize I won't miss the Haruhi and Mikuru figures I used to drool over.
just a lil less :P haha
hmmmmmmm I spent 2.3k usd over the last year.... im banned from part time. My capital for the hobby was 690 usd i got from part time during a large holiday. The rest was careful investment in certain merchandise i like and saving on my part to buy moar.
lol nice~
Forget jobs, who needs jobs :P
I don't want to know..DX
..I do plan on cutting back quite a bit for 2011. Bad exchange rate, school, cred card bill and car expenses are keeping me from splurging this year (despite getting a full time job recently, ironically)
Plus I'm putting together a dollfie little by little, so there's that lol.
dun cut back, spend twice as much :]
... I am kinda afraid to calculate - been collecting anime toys in general for over 10 years and have far too much manga, plus a lolita too!(at least this one has a spreadsheet file keeping track of total spent in 6 years)
And this year bought my first DD which was a blackhole in an already stretched budget
Ironically, I used to buy MORE stuff before, yet nowadays I overthink all purchases and try to set up silly limits like "only one figure/doll per chara!"
lol if you haven't gone into 5digits, there is nothing to worry about xP
and wow~ there's alot of comments on this post xD
most I've seen in awhile
*cough* have spent those 5digits on lolita clothes [but this is over time of few years, thank g0d]
all the toys from this year (counting the DD and her clothes too) was a total of maybe 3grand
lol haha nice, well~ next goal will be six :P
I spent a lot, How much do you spend?
Recently started to calculate monthly and honestly I'm glad I do.
Now I can see how much money goes to this hobby and made me realize it's far too much lately.
By doing this it made me much more aware of spending money on things I don't actually need or want as much as I thought I did.
Thus it made me reflect on myself and cut down my hobby spendings.
no it's ok, money are meant to be spent ~ haha
........at least $10k since I started collecting this year. I didn't realize it was that much... I think it's time to start downsizing my collection & being more strict about what I order. *sigh*
Surprisingly I don't buy that much. At least anime related goods. Usually my money is some how squandered away on other things. Like cost of living and car maintenance. I also like to splurge excess cash into my PC. Saving is good too, never know when something bad may happen, like a year of unemployment, for example. (such a stressful time, thankfully savings saved me. pun not intended)
I throw the bills away instantly haha
i usually just save up my money for a few months and the next month i get my hands on much figures as i could >.< why does the econamy in U.S. have to be so hard?
i dont know about the year, but during AX 2010 alone, i spent over two paychecks worth of goods. granted its minimum wages, but i think spending over $400 is quite a lot for just 4 days.
From October last year till now?
Above 15K AUD, and its all related to Busou Shinkis
most of it will be Busou Shinki clothing which can almost be 200$ for one dress
Oooohhhh I should post my bills too ^^; I have two hobbies so my bills will overwelm everyone.
Figures, Nendoroids, Dollfies etc are considered as toys and toys have no customs charges at all. Maybe that's why i can still buy figures like i'm posessed. lol
I will say around $2000 on my hobby, EMS became more expensive I think especially where you are buying (import) magazines. I can't help but use EMS because of fast shipping and insurance and I don't want it to any damages on my order especially overseas.
Been collecting for about a month and possible a half and already spend over $1,000.00 USD TT_TT lol.
Probably could have used that money for something else important ^^
probably 2 months and half ^^
