how much do you spend a year?

Posted by superunature

Just looking at the invoices scares me :P and that dosen't even include over $300 from mandarake, $700~ from chuck's anime, ~$50 from amiami, and some other places that doesn't provide an invoices (mostly ebay) and invoices that I can't find. I think Im up to around $2.2k for the past 8months or so :P and looks like will continue and just be more and more each year. biggest problem is that, I filled a whole 6ft bookcase with these stuff that I don't even know where to put new stuff I buy anymore~~ over $1,200 in K-on items alone~~ first item (3rd figure I bought) is the first I bought from official distributor (Hobby Search) was only since late June of this year right before I went on vacation, and now I got ~20 or so and more to come every month o_o
when do you think you will stop buying?

Mouseover = load notes.

just gotta deal with it :P
my may envy that japanese otaku don't have to pay the hefty shipping. But they also make less (on avg) and has higher living expense (on avg) then we do :P
      so it balanaces.
on avg it costs about 700-1000yen for SAL a small to midium size figure. and around 1580-2080 for EMS, which is why I just can't afford EMS~

Well, figures alone, maybe like around $50... all the other merch i think takes me to around $430. And, I'd spend more if I didn't just bankrupt myself til January when I get financial aid again. I literally bought anime merch til I couldn't afford to eat anymore. :P ._.

I think I would have few hundreds $ over the cost of tuition :P
trying to get my gpa to 3.25 (currently 3.08) so I can possibly get more~
grading system should be broken down into more like A+ A A- B+ B B- etc.
A is not easy, but B is very easy.
and most all my classes happens to get 87-88 or so xD right now I have
87,88,88,96,97 in the five classes I have, but unfortunately that would be B,B,B,A,A...

Crap, I didn't think about the gpa affecting financial aid. Needa try harder.

the A+ A- system would actually make GPA higher
          because a B- (80-82) is a 3.0
          where right now a B (80-89) is a 3.0
the only difference really that would bring it lower is that 92-100 = 4.0
          90-91 = 3.8
          instead of 90-100 = 4.0

I started this collecting hobby ages ago, and while initially, there was no way for me to afford the expenditure as a student along with my other hobbies(at that point, I was limited to just comics, mooks, and the occasional figure every 9-12 months). Ever since I've been working though, the collecting hobby has gonna snowballed out of control until recently. Not to say I've quit cold turkey, but I'm running out of space to store all my wares(and honestly, I should probably sell some of it to make space...) in my apartment, and really have needed to dial it back.

Honest truth is, either you'll get bored of collecting things, or you realize you've got other things you want to do with your hobby money, or run out of room/patience(from those close to you, rather than from yourself most likely), and cut back, or stop. Not to say that doesn't mean you'll stop wanting new stuff, but that there won't be room/budget for it anymore~

I can understand that. Thing is I don't buy much merch like figures or artbooks outside of Shana or Kara no Kyoukai and it's really only those two series that I put my main focus on (and to an extent, Clannad as well I guess) since I'm not really interested in collecting merch for any other series (other than maybe its CD releases). I guess that's why I'm able to buy a lot of official Japanese anime DVDs and BDs.

Including shipping and all my preorders up to the end of this month, I've spent... $716.18. Not too bad, considering I ordered 7 ALTER figures and 5 Nendoroids.
I definitely plan on slowing down next year.

I started collecting Nendos in July an now im up to 32 at about $40 each average that's only $1200 maybe $1300 and I have sold a lot of old figures about $600 worth to help buy more Nendos ...... its easy to spend a lot bit I just buy only what I want and if its at a good price collecting is fun as long as it doesn't become obsession ....... then all your money is gone ... I'm only collecting Nendos from now and i only buy what I like

Lets see, every since i was very young, I was into model building (Gundams, Other Mechs, Fighter Jets, Battle ships, Street/Race cars of all scales)... later got into garage kits (real and copies), then came collection PVCs, and recently Nendos, Revolvetechs and Figmas, all kinds of ther animation goods, 5 TB worth of storage space for all my animations and music. And finally started Dollfie Dreams last month. NO WAY IN HELL I can find out how much I spent... but Dollfie Dream alone I have probably spent over 6k.. not including the Saber Lily to come.

"started last month" Dollfie Dream alone spent over 6K"
storage space are becoming really cheap now. I bought a 2.5" 640gb for my laptop for $50~
which is the biggest I need for now since my anime stuff only takes lil more then 200gb right now~
Now....if all 5tb worth of your animation and musics were legally purchased, that would be impressive :P

For me, the question is probably more "when will I start buying." ^^; I mean, yeah, I did manage to get a DD using money from gifts, but that was only possible because I haven't bought any figures since Christmas 2008. Even with the doll purchases I'm holding back; I'm making her clothes instead of buying them, most of her props I either made myself or lucked out at the thrift store, and she still has no shoes. ^^; Looking forward to being out of school and actually having money for fun stuff for a change. . .

True that. I manage for the moment by being pretty selective about my purchases so I only get perhaps one PVC a month, a few nendo's and small things like pencil boards / A3 mats. I intend to to remodel my room and buy a bunch of glass cabinets, which will solve any space issues for a few years to come.

ONLY till like last year around the same time as now i started to go nuts. since last year november i have bought 4 Dollfies and have had 500-700 doller loots every month till now went to japan soo if i had to guess my dd costed mashiro ( 1300 ) rin ( 1200 ) yuki ( 1250 ) mio ( 600 ) about 15 volks outfits and shoes, variety of wigs ( unknown cost ) monthly figure spendings 650 avg x 12 would be about 14XXX AUD minimum.

wow thats alot ... i should cut back

Well simnce reading this post i went and found the folder i keep all my invoices for Anime and figures in....
That was a bad move in 8 months ive spent just over £11,000 on Daki's' bathposters, dvds, manga and figures. Sad thing is i think the Blu-ra Dvds equate to atleast 1/3rd of that its like £30-60 an episode (I like the limited Ed. ones)

yeah chuck's anime is based in NY. I buy from him because his prices are cheaper (most time even then amiami) (He buys in shipments of 300,000yen at a time) and no worry about damaged shipment since packages are damaged on the other-side of the world :P domestically, even minimal packaging would be sufficient.
and I even asked him about if he has to pay customs and he said one once out of like a hundred. and his shipments are like near $4k each :P

Ahh sounds like a nice little business he's got going on their, i suppose buying in bulk has its benefits and means nice prices for you as you dont have to pay some large shipping cost from japan.

Customs obviously arent as mad as they are over here once they charged my £60 customs charge for something i bought for £20 becuase they thought its value was higher than what was marked, needles to say i won the dispute :P but still over here they seem to be really picky.

Ahh your a student, thats must make it hard having to pick and choose which figures to buy dunno how i would manage as if i like it i just buy it :P Call me nuts but hey :)

Figures and doujin are my most expensive part of the anime hobby; I don't keep the invoices but I can safely assume I've spent a little less than 10 thousand in both.

If you're really concerned about your finances, I think it's time for your cropping phase in the hobby ^^ which means selling what you really don't want anymore, and start thinking more about your future purchases. I've saved a ton of money by suppressing my impulse-buy urges and only focus on what I really want. It's hard, but for example now I realize I won't miss the Haruhi and Mikuru figures I used to drool over.

... I am kinda afraid to calculate - been collecting anime toys in general for over 10 years and have far too much manga, plus a lolita too!(at least this one has a spreadsheet file keeping track of total spent in 6 years)

And this year bought my first DD which was a blackhole in an already stretched budget

Ironically, I used to buy MORE stuff before, yet nowadays I overthink all purchases and try to set up silly limits like "only one figure/doll per chara!"

Recently started to calculate monthly and honestly I'm glad I do.
Now I can see how much money goes to this hobby and made me realize it's far too much lately.
By doing this it made me much more aware of spending money on things I don't actually need or want as much as I thought I did.
Thus it made me reflect on myself and cut down my hobby spendings.

........at least $10k since I started collecting this year. I didn't realize it was that much... I think it's time to start downsizing my collection & being more strict about what I order. *sigh*

Surprisingly I don't buy that much. At least anime related goods. Usually my money is some how squandered away on other things. Like cost of living and car maintenance. I also like to splurge excess cash into my PC. Saving is good too, never know when something bad may happen, like a year of unemployment, for example. (such a stressful time, thankfully savings saved me. pun not intended)

i dont know about the year, but during AX 2010 alone, i spent over two paychecks worth of goods. granted its minimum wages, but i think spending over $400 is quite a lot for just 4 days.

Figures, Nendoroids, Dollfies etc are considered as toys and toys have no customs charges at all. Maybe that's why i can still buy figures like i'm posessed. lol

I will say around $2000 on my hobby, EMS became more expensive I think especially where you are buying (import) magazines. I can't help but use EMS because of fast shipping and insurance and I don't want it to any damages on my order especially overseas.

Been collecting for about a month and possible a half and already spend over $1,000.00 USD TT_TT lol.

Probably could have used that money for something else important ^^
