MG 1/100 MSN-06S Sinanju

Posted by mtomczek [www]

Hello!

This is my entry for the Bandai World Gundam Competition, the MG MSN-06S Sinanju! Overall the build took me about 2 1/2 weeks, and features custom metal parts as well custom waterslide decals. The paint is a base of Mr. Surfacer 1200, with Mr.Color Gloss Black over it. Then a coat of Mr. Color Super Metallic Chrome, followed up with Tamiya Clear Red.

I have been building Gunpla for about 10 years now, and have been building models since I was 5. I was the North American BAKUC Semi-Final champion for 2008, and respresented the United States and Canada in the BAKUC finals in Hong Kong where I placed Third.

I would love to see a MG Zeta Delta Plus "Hummingbird" or MG Nightengale kit made, as well as the Gerbera Tetra and the Gerbera Tetra Plus!

Enjoy!

Awesome metalic finish~ I especially liked the metalic blue thrusters, and fainting red to orange on the bottom of the shield, both very cool!

Very nice finish painting but the metal thrusters color doesnt seem to match well with the color. If you use the correct color, your modeling work is perfect for me. I think probably you mean Delta Plus, I guess.

Holy crap, that is impressive. I like how the colors came out, and you've pretty much killed my desire to submit my Sinanju into the project, haha. To be a nitpicker though, I agree on the color on the thrusters, they don't seem to ptovide the right contrast to make them "fit" the kit. Also, did you use an airbrush or spray cans?

Thanks for the comments all! I actually meant the Zeta Plus "Hummingbird" with the 4 booster packs and fuel tanks, not the standard Zeta Plus A1 or C1.

The kit is all airbrushed, and the thrusters were at the request of the person I built this for. He really wanted the blue thrusters against the red.

The majority of the paint is Mr.Color, with the exception of the clear red, orange, and blue which are Tamiya. The thrusters are from mechaskunk.com. :)

Very impressive paint job, was wondering how you applied your layers. Was it straight out of the spray can or was it paint in an airbrush including the Mr. Colour bases?
Also love the orange to red gradient on the shield, you'll have to write a guide for that one. ^^
Keep up the good work and this'll go far.

wow!! that is amazing mtomczek. thanks for showing us how u got that color, i always wanted to know how to get such a nice shiny color. i completed my sinanju in august and also painted the thrusters a metallic blue :) too bad overall mine looks no where near as nice as yours.
is mr.color oil based or water based? why did u use tamiya paint instead of mr.color paint for the red? also what is the purpose of the coat of black? can u still get the same results without it?
thank you! :) keep up the great work

Thanks! Mr. Color I believe is laquer based or enamel based, either way it needs to be thinned and cleaned with Mr. Color thinner, or similar laquer/enamel thinner. Water will not work, nor will acrylic thinner.

The purpose of the black coat is to give a nice smooth glossy finish for the chrome silver to lay on top of. It also helps to bring the metal color out a bit more, opposed to just spraying it over the primer. Without the gloss black coat, the chrome silver will end up laying uneven and will not be shiny at all.

mr color is lacquer paint, but seriously...
how much bottle did you use to paint this kit btw?

    about color...
is adding flat red onto a flat black surface will only ended up making the red faded and not getting in, or what....
i need to spray alot of flat red until it gets in and the result while satisfying, eat my paint like crazy...

if you use many bottles, any suggestion where i can get MR hobby lacquer easily and reasonable price?

You should always put flat red, or any bright color for that matter, over white. It will save you paint, and it will turn out bright and vibrant like it should. If you put it over a dark color such as black or grey it will never turn out truely red.

For the Sinanju I used 1 small bottle of Mr Surfacer 1200, 3 bottles of Mr. Color gloss black, 1 bottle of Mr. Super Metallic Chrome, and 1 1/2 bottle of Tamiya clear red.

holy son'u'va.... 3 bottle for black alone... i guess i should've stock up on base color
my problem is to generate blood like red, yours are more into chrome red/crimson IMO, while other flat red i've seen on most sazabi/sinanju are just flat red
tho i never tried mixing flat red & black, but i believe a mixture of it will just generate blackish red, not red with blackish aura
i manage to pull blood color but i end up using so much paint for 1 color alone for 1 part alone >_< (layer to layer, and layer again...)
and all nearby hobby store in my city is running out of red (3) gundam color and flat black >_<

The Tamiya's are acrylics. They work well over the lacquer as the two will not harm each other. I typically use Mr. Super Clear for my final clear coat (not on this build, used Future Floor Acrylic for the gloss) and it works wonderfully on the tamiya acrylics.

the first picture really awesome.. not mention the modification is really great, but your picture really great for a wallpaper (the detail in the left side, and unicorn logo), can I grab it? and maybe adding a little sinanju specification (with a small font size) makes the first picture more beautiful.. Great job!

    Sometimes I'm trying to get on a Black Sinanju, but I don't have much plannings on how it'll be, base color's gonna be black, but just too afraid if I'm gonna ruin it much ^^;
    I'm much of a builder, not a modifier ><
And your Sinanju looks more fierce with your red settings ^^

Gold parts were sprayed gloss black first (Mr. Color) then masked off and sprayed with Mr. Color Super Metallics gold. I then went back and touched up any areas by hand with a paint brush.

The inner frame is Mr. Color Super Metallics super iron.
