"sempai" is a Japanese honorific that generally means "mentor" or "upperclassman"

Yea, in the light novel she's from, Bungaku Shoujo, Amano Touko is sempai to the main character. The first volume Is translated to English by yen press. I highly recommend it!
先輩 (senpai), means upper-classman, but it doesn't only apply to school. It can also apply to work as well. Think of it a coworker who have done something for longer and have more experience than you.
