Naruto Shippuden & Disney XD
Big news today thanks to the Hollywood Reporter is that Disney completed a deal with Viz to air Naruto Shippuden in the US on Disney's XD block of programming. Cartoon Network probably did it's greatest blunder since it's canceling of Toonami and their few years of practically ignoring what got them on the map in the first place, anime.
Before I get Adult Swim fans mad at me, I'll gladly state that I like a few things from AS that are on today and I was part of the crowd that helped bring back Family Guy. Yet, as someone who's been watching CN since the days of Pokemon in 1996, the progression of Cartoon Network and the very creation of Adult Swim was due to anime...which has been forgotten and made fun of since about 2004-2005.
As an anime purest and as an anime store owner, I have strong feelings on both sides. As for marketing and for the hope of a true revival of anime in the US market, Naruto Shippuden being on Disney XD is amazing. My business will be booming and combined with Syfy channel, FUNimation channel, and The Anime Network, anime could finally not be at the butt of every joke at Williams Street and be back in the lime light. Though my friend Tiago who got me into anime, works for Willams Street (Adult Swim), the joke is really on Cartoon Network now. Like it or not, having the first Naruto series was a plus for them. Let's not forget Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel. Disney might even attract the same type of crowd and heck, maybe even the same crowd that Toonami had.
The anime purest in me though is a bit ticked. The reason why is that we will see a well drawn (but highly fillered) series like Naruto become this kiddy, watered down US version to accommodate the kiddies on Disney. You'll see sandwiches digitally covering rice balls since the US market "won't get it" and any scene with blood and violence in Naruto will be brutally hacked or sweat will be replacing the blood. If this is the price to pay to bring back anime's popularity to the US, I guess it is a decent price to pay.
Don't get any SKY or Cable channels.. so this doesn't affect me one bit. Wish I had sky tv...:sob:
CNX was an epic channel. When it changed into Toonami it was less awesome, but still better than most cartoon-heavy channels.
Lol, Disney is on a roll they bought Marvel, now having Naruto being on Disney..

they butchered on CN, i can only imagine what disney will do.
seriously -_- The episodes are going to be like 10 minutes long since everything will be cut.
^^; If it gets cut down, I'm hoping they'll be smart and cut off the excess that was used to stretch each episode in Shippuuden. There were long, long episodes where hardly anyone ever said anything because they were busy looking around for 3 minutes. That's pretty much a pipe dream though, I suppose.
that would make sense to do that but chances are, those are the only scenes they can keep in without upsetting the overly religious parents here in the US.

I do agree with you, that CN has been pretty effing stupid the past few years, especially with the cancellation of Toonami and the dropping of Naruto as a regular series, as well as bringing in family oriented (but non-animated) movies on Sundays. Don't even get me started on the idiotic 'CN Real' block where they basically imitate quality shows like MythBusters and Web Soup but fail miserably. The fact that anime is constantly berated on [adult swim] doesn't help things either. As much as I love watching my dubbed anime on Saturday nights, I loved watching Bebop and Gundam on weeknights when they aired it. Now I spend most of my time on Siffy watching Gundam 00 and weekdays watching Conan (and soon Jay!) instead of the inane block they have running now. Come on, [as], KING OF THE HILL!?

I believe before each fight they will sing instead of talking. All fights become musicals, talking animals and inanimate objects galore.
They're probably going to have to skip the whole Team Asuma and Team Kakashi vs Hidan and Kakuzu arc altogether >< That arc is currently my favorite out of all of Shippuuden right now, due to Shikamaru and Naruto's actions during said arc. Way too much death and dismemberment for the average Disney watcher though, I wager.
Ummm... You do know that their demographic for this show is aimed at male teens. That, and that Viz Media is the company making the edits... Right?
I believe that as much as I believe that Sarah Palin is correct with all her claims against the Health Care Reform. Same logic, seeing how you neglected to note that it is Viz Media and not Disney who will make the edits... As well as the fact that Disney XD was created for the male demographic. (-_-;;

The thing that people (including Chuck and Gikongan here) has forgotten is that when the first Naruto series was when it appeared on Cartoon Network, it was put on Toonami in hopes of filling out the tween (pre-teen) demographic... Not the adult demographic. So it had to be edited within FCC standards. (Honestly, though, the only "butchering" done was when they created the first intro song. And then they realized in the end that it was a butchering.)
As for Disney XD, it is targeting the male demographic (due to the fact that Disney XD was made to be for the male demographic). So there may be a chance that the FCC will let them slide with less edits than Cartoon Network's Toonami version (of Naruto) due to the time it would be shown and its target group.
Besides... Disney knows that it has been shunning the male demographic, namely the 13-17 group, due to the fact their more popular series are aimed at girls. And even though they own the Power Rangers franchise, that series was created for more the tween male demographic. But with series being licensed for TV, it looks like they may have another good shot at winning back most of the male demographic.
