MG MSN-06S Sinanju Version Ka
I'm so happy this thing is finally friggin' finished. How happy, you ask?
I got this kit as a Christmas gift in December. Of last year. Sure, I took a seven month break for monetary reasons and general laziness, but I digress.
I wish I had waited a while before attempting this thing, as it truly is a beast to complete and I don't know if I was ready, but I got it done and I'm happy with the results. I didn't get to replace all the engines with custom metal ones, but after all the jars of clear red this thing cost me I wasn't really willing to drop $60 on 24 metal engines.
Now, a couple of you followed the work in progress so you know why this thing drove me crazy. Anyone who has ever attempted this suit knows why it drove me crazy. That. F**king. Gold. Not wanting to hand paint, because I don't have the dexterity nor patience to accomplish such a feat, I tried many things to achieve the gold effect. I tried sacrificing a virgin to Kali Ma, I tried asking Santa to please do my gold trim for Christmas, I tried kidnapping a Japanese schoolchild to do it for me, EVERYTHING. I eventually settled on what seemed like a good idea at the time: gold chrome metal "decals" from an eBay store.
I'm going to say it right now, don't waste $10 on these things. They're really just metal stickers, they really barely stick, smudge easily, and don't bend well. Most of them popped right up and looked ugly. So that's my final word for those who saw the WIP: DON'T USE THE METAL DECALS. Instead, do what I ultimately did. Go to your local art supply store and pick yourself up a Krylon Gold Leafing Chisel Tip pen.

It cost me $10 at Aaron Brothers, but you can get them as low as $3 from the Amazon link above. This is hands down how you want to do the gold trim on Sinanju, and how I did mine. Just trace a smooth arc over the design parallel to it to get a smooth coat that rarely leaks over onto the black. If it DOES leak where you don't want it, just wipe it away before it dries and it won't leave any residue. If you miss some, or you can't wipe it away and some gold gets on the black, just go over it with a black Micron pen. You should also use the Micron to clean up the edges of the gold parts and make it all look neat. Don't worry if it looks a bit off, once you clearcoat the bugger you won't even be able to tell it's there.
As always, please do comment and ask any questions you might have, I'm happy to answer!

Yeah, I'm aware I have a really, really, really unprofessional photo setup, as evidenced by my desk in the background.

Looks good overall but I must say most of the pictures have so little lighting its kinda hard to tell..
Eh I had my only two lights shining on it, it's just a really dark paint job, I went for crimson instead of a cherry red. Thanks though!
All I'm saying is you previous WIP has better lighting..
Ah, that's true and now that I look back at it I think I see what you mean. The notable difference is where I took each shot and the time of day, the work in progress was during daylight on a dresser my window shines on and these were at night on the other side of the room.
Once I finish my finals tomorrow I'll take some photos in the daylight outside and see how it comes out. Nice catch.
well, finally its finish!!, its sure looks very nice and shiny!
it seems like u didn't use the gold decal afterall and went to painting instead, good move!! :D
Even easier, check the post for a link to the life saver on the gold!
i see!!a paint marker pen, very nice. the gold colour seems similar tomr.hobby metallic gold!! :)
I'm really liking the metallic red... You do it? Or is it the titanium version? Also the gold looks nice too
I did it, here's the formula:
Model Master Grey Primer -> Tamiya Gloss Black -> Tamiya Gunmetal -> Tamiya Clear Red x 3 coats
Gees man... No wonder it took long to finish it... But the red is awesome! It was worth it..
Beautiful paint job, the gold leafing definitely balances the MS. The standard gold plastic too shinny for your paint job, so kudos indeed.
Thank you sir, glad to hear that it's passing peoples' various tests since the gold worried me so much haha!
Sinanjuuuuu... Drooooool... Xp...
Very nice...
Hi Vasch,
I just love your Sinanju, love everything out of it. I think I know what do you mean... by very happy to complete it. after so long since you have started it. must be very satisfying with the end product! Good job!
Thanks, it has its flaws but I'm happy with it overall. Glad to hear you liked it!
Whoah, that gold and red is really nice, maybe if I buy a sinanju in the future, I will also get that pen. Thanks for sharing this!
oooh btw, which one is the pen, because on that amazon link, it says copper leafing pen on the picture. is this the one you bought?

Yep, that's definitely the pen I bought. I'll double-check the Amazon link I posted and make sure I linked to gold. Thanks for the feedback!
hahahha 3 months after i commented here, finally got the sinanju and the pen
currently working on the torso, the pen works really nice, similar to gundam marker gold. Thanks for sharing this dude!
Nice! Can't wait to see what you do with it. If the gold runs off the raised areas onto the black, just get a black micron pen and draw over it when it's dry. When you apply the gloss coat for decaling, the black of the torso and the black of the micron look virtually the same, I couldn't see any difference.
And no problem about the sharing, that's what the community is for after all! Are you doing stock paint job or something a little different?
hahahhaa just straight build + matte top coat, hahahah yeah, i used my black gundam marker for lining for the ink bleeding lol
oooh dude you know what i changed my mind, finally stripped off sinanju's armor and planning to paint it metallic red. For the tamiya clear red did you get the spray one or the one where you have to hand paint it? like those acrylic paints
It's the small jar of clear red that you can thin for airbrush use, I sprayed it on. It looks like a normal Tamiya acrylic jar, it's just filled with clear red.
So I DID spray it on, but I did not use the spray can version. I used the jar, thinned it, and airbrushed.
Did you just spray clear red directly on the plastic without anything else?
No. I first used a grey primer, then a coat of gloss black. After the gloss black dried, I sprayed on Tamiya Gunmetal. When that was dried and cured, I then sprayed on the clear red. The gunmetal undercoat is what gives it the metallic look.
