do people make fun of you because you watch anime or read manga?

Have you ever been made fun of being a anime lover or manga reader?well some guy in my school said:

"anime are for little kids"
"why do you read that crappy jap book"
"only babies play Yu-gi-oh"

so some I hard on the internet are even worst O_O

"you can find those crappy picture books in a junk yard"
"anime talks about how to be dumb"
"anime characters look like fish with those mega huge eyes"

Have you ever been made fun of watching anime/reading manga?

A long long time ago, I wrote an article exactly about the mentality and social reasoning behind why people automatically associate anime with hentai. Read it here.

Yeah unfortunatly were i live its quite a common thing if people find out. My friends say just dont read or watch it in public but to be honest im not ashamed or embaressed by it so i do, but the amount of rude comments i get is stupid. Even people at my work think its really messed up saying im watching animated child pron:P
Just goes to show how little these people know and how crap their lives must be if they enjoy shouting abuse at you.
Ive even been called a Paedo because i watch it.
Damn i could go on all day about the abuse that comes with this hobby/ lifestyle but i suppose everyone entitled to their opinion just wish they would keep it to themselves if they dislike it.

well normally people around me only make the common remarks like, you still read comics and watch cartoons with that age? or you like little girls. When i say i like anime and manga to a person that doesn't know me and i explained what it is the most common remark is, oh that thing that years ago was late on tv with children and tentacles -.-'. but the best remarks i heard when i was reading manga were "that book is defective, the pages and cover are wrong they are flipped" and of course the, "but the pages are all black and white wouldn't it be better if it was in colours?"
fortunely not all persons are like that, my girlfriend also likes manga and anime and my friends understand, but well when you are an otaku you just get used too it

i only get stares and bad comments and jokes is when i make cosplay, well when i walk to the events and cons with my group. (however in france i rode two trains and two subways just to get to japan expo, (i was cosplaying as nozomu itoshiki), no one stared and commented there actually a lot of cosplayers in the last subway, and when i asked directions to a group of policeman, one even asked where was my katana and if i was cosplaying as someone of bleach O.O, that made my day looooooool )

Well the whole thing is this, people will give negative opinions no matter what it is. It could be Baseball, Hockey, Rap, Country, Anime ANYTHING. Aslong as there are people who enjoy a certain hobby, lifestyle whatever there will always be people who don't share the same interest and degrade it. But i will say this, there were some people in school that even to me were a little toooo into it for my liking but i'd never "trample over my dreams" as some anime would say. Props to whoever could figure out where that line is from cause i've been killing myself trying to find out.

There will always be people who haven't seen the "dark" side (ha ha) because of misconceptions. For now, don't be concerned about what this person says because in the future. The person might realize his misconception because they haven't seen the world that is really around them.

For now, let it flow in and let it flow out like water. A wise person knows when to stand up and when to sit down. Most people who try make a point with misconceptions stand up without fully knowing what they are talking about.

Ahhh... f^^; It's really unfortunate to have this sort of thing happen to you, and for those people, they really need to clear up their misconceptions (if any), and also start to respect each other.
Luckily for me stuff like that don't happen here ^^; my friends and classmates all have different interests and likes and we still get along so well.

As for the internet, I guess anything goes. f^^; but things like these...really shouldn't be happening.

Guess I'm lucky in a certain manner of speaking. Where I live anime/manga and general otaku culture is pretty widely accepted and people rarely say anything and maybe you'll get the occasional stare but that's about it. It's just something you have to except and deal with. Though times have changed a bit, I was teased for playing yu-gi-oh and now people find me weird because I'm a doll owner, even people within the otaku community and show or say disapproval of it sometimes. So yeah, all in all you just need to get used to it.

Usually I don't tell everyone I meet that I'm into anime & manga (mostly because it's regarded as children's stuff around here), but once people get to know me better they find out about it sooner or later - and I don't really mind, because I'm not making a big effort to hide it. I also like to think that I'm quite self-confident about the matter, so they mostly leave it at one or two remarks or say something like "you and your crazy anime stuff" xD

But my family is a different story. =^= My youngest brother and one of my grandma's have told me on multiple occasions that I should quit collecting nendoroids and grow up. But I ignore them. I don't tell them how to live their lives, so they shouldn't tell me.

The most negative remark I recall is the occasional smart assed comment if I happen to be wearing an anime or videogame related shirt. Though, more often than not, the reactions are positive. Back when I was in highschool, more than a few of my art projects involved something anime/videogame related. If I happened to be working on a piece and someone walked by they would comment on it and generally compliment it. Also, at my last job, I brought my laptop to work and watched anime on break/lunch sometimes. People would wonder what I was watching and ask if they could watch, too.

    2. I blend in with w/e my friend's hobby are, so if they like anime, we talk about anime. if they like cars, we talk about cars. So the conversation can go smoothly without getting bored.
    3. I played yu-gi-oh in MS and it was extremely popular, literally there is always 5 or so tables of people playing yu-gi-oh during lunch.

I rarely get bothered about it but if I do it's usually the "you still watch children's cartoons" saying and then I gotta go through the explanation and differences blah blah blah. Now as for manga I read it in public and have yet to be bothered by it. It just seems that people are more lenient nowadays to manga/anime down were I live at. Now people seeing my room is another storyXD.

Personally even if I were to be bothered by someone about it and they wouldn't drop the fact that I do what I do, is someone I wouldn't want to hang out with anyways and it would just be a waste of breath further explaining it to him or her.

Being made fun of for your hobbys seems more like a high school thing whats you get away from that setting things like that dont really happen as much at least in my experience.

Only thing like that is when my cuz asks what im doing if i say anime he says "oh hentai" but that more to just mess with me cause he watches anime too.

    I got a lot of that in middle/high school. orz I come from a small town, so watching anime is a very odd concept to a lot of the people there who usually spend their free time... hunting. Yeah... I'd have to say that a majority of the people who looked down on anime were the small-town hicks (excuse the word, but I can't think of a more appropriate one). It was very frustrating. Though, in high school, it wasn't for anime as much as studying Japanese since I was the only one doing it. = =;

Anyhow, I don't get that crap anymore (especially not here in Japan). One of my friends here doesn't care for anime but since her boyfriend loves it, she is more supportive. XD

Nah, if anything animu is pretty popular around here. I get flack mostly for why I have so many figures and why are the boobs so big ? :P

They don't make fun of me because I can make fun of them for watching the mind deteriorating garbage called "Jersey Shore," I live in a community with a great Asian population as well and people don't really comment on the whole anime/manga thing. Heck, I carry a messenger bag with Kona-chan's face plastered on it everyday for school. If anything is an issue regarding this, it's probably only the racism/stereotyping. I'm actually surprised by reading through these responses and seeing that people automatically assume that anime=hentai.

I was a smarty pants back in high school so people didn't give me back handed comments about my hobby. My teachers didn't even cared that I read manga in class. I guess it was cause our school was pretty laid back, there wasn't that many cliques. Or I was just super oblivious.

I co-founded the anime(Japanese culture) club in our school and in my last year we even hosted on festival.

But I think one of the main reasons why I wasn't hassled for my hobby is that I'm Asian. It's sad to say, but it seems that people who arn't asian get a whole lot more grief for liking anime/manga or Asian culture.

lol, people don't give me grief, otherwise, if someone gave you grief for watching/reading anime/manga, then maybe they're in the wrong, either that or if someone mouthed off to me, I would give them a backhand, since you'd have to defend your interests if they do get carried away and yay, she's online... -big goofy smile- @ Giada-neesan. My lovely Italian sister... She can cosplay very good.

Lucky for me, I'm in a magnet program that is filled with nerds who all love games and anime. ^_^ Too bad none share the hobby of figure collecting with me though.

I used to get those exact rude, ignorant comments when I was in middle school though. It was incessantly annoying. Those kids had no idea what they were talking about.

Bottom line is to not let it get to you. You are your own person. If they don't understand your likes so what? A lot of people are ignorant and they'll just bash on you to make themselves feel better. Enjoy what you like! ^_^

    Never bother them my friend.

    It's just normal here.

They can have a hobby to play footbal, cycling, shopping or whatever, so you also have the right to have a hobby such as watching anime.

They can have a hobby to buy expensive bags and shoes, so do you have a right to buy Nendos, Figmas, or whatever you wants with your hobby.

If they laugh at you mean they are just someone who would not your friend.
They are strangers, so why bother with what strangers say against you?

We here are your friend who share the same interest and that's all enough. \(^o^)/

In my case, my friends in university they have their own obsession.
Some are the same with me with anime, some goes with Korean Drama.
But we are all getting along well.

So, just show off your anime stuffs, who might know there's actually your classmates having the same hobby but afraid to announce it at public because she/he feel like what you feel now.

When you find these people, you guys can form a guild!
(or just friend or a clubs... LOL)

So, have a nice day ya, don't be gloomy again. ^^

Although I've never been a part of a 'group' (I always wandered around being friendly to everyone) no-one really knew of my hobby. I wasn't afraid to say I liked it but that happened few and far between, anyone that might have known probably forgot.
The few people that I may have told and spent most of my time with I've always showed them titles like Gurren Lagann or Fullmetal Alchemist. Those show that anime can be awesome and fun in different ways. It's a shame I've not found anyone in the same area as me who I can meet up and chat to about this hobby.

If they have the time too throw abuse your way because you enjoy something, what does that say about them and their hobbies? Are they jealous because we love something so interesting and unique?

Maybe they are jealous. Oh well, if they try mock you, let them, if they get beyond a point, defend yourself. -kicks a small switch and pulls out a soda cannon and fires sending someone away from his house in a torrent of iced tea, pepsi, coka cola, ramune, and some other drinks-

I think all people that love animation have in some time of his life this problem.
But only exist when u are little kid (15-16) when you got older (adult) you just ignore.
I got teachers from my University that had same interests as myself! Hiding usually is not the best way.
Last 2 years i started to buy Anime Figures, and now in my room i got 1 detolf showing them all (I've some QB figures/loli/plushie etc..).
Is a hobby, some people buy clothes, other drugs, other cellphones, etc..

I haven't encountered too much hostility towards anime/manga around my area. Actually I'm finding out more of my friends are into certain anime/manga than I thought there were. I'm pretty sure other places than where I live are not so friendly towards Japanese Pop Culture. Such a shame that they don't understand what J-Pop culture means to us, it's not all about hentai and stuff like that. What I love about anime and Japanese Pop Culture is the uniqueness of it, how you can become so connected with the characters and the story, and how Japanese music helps me to bring me to another world for me to dream in. I don't see Japanese Culture as my childhood, I can see it as part of my future.

ah? seems that in Singapore not many people are teasing people who are into animes...or maybe, much lesser than those in the west?

in singapore, i notice that quite a big portions of teenagers, or even adults who are into anime/manga. (my 40 year old uncle has a whole shelf of bleach & naruto manga). you can even see people reading manga on trains... maybe because of the 'amount' of people who are into anime/manga, not much people make fun of it. (there are still, though.) i'm in high school and there are still people who are interested in it, and cosplays! ^^ maybe we're more fortune as compared to otakus elsewhere in the globe. D:

It's much lesser of a deal in Asia than it is in the States. For some reason, Otaku's in the US take it way more to an extreme, as if they need to flaunt to the world that they're otaku, while in Singapore/Hong Kong it's pretty normal for us.

I don't hide my liking of anime and figures to anyone, but I certainly don't shove it in their face either. I think with all the people I met, only one person has received my hobby negatively, everyone else finds it interesting since it's something they've never heard of themselves.
