MG Sinanju custom paint

Posted by jokster [www]

Greeting guys and wish you all a Merry Christmas

This is my attempt on making a titanium finish version of the Sinanju . Tried following mtomczek tutorial on painting the titanium finish but sadly the paints required here in my country aren't available. So i decided to substitute some of the paints that were available here. For the chrome i used rj london chrome spray can paint and used the same mr color clear red and orange paint sprayed via air brush then top coated with mr top coat gloss.

Can i ask you guys how you protect the paint specially in painting titanium finishes, because when i started to assemble the kit the clear paint easily peels off and did a lot of touch ups because of that. Was it the paint that I've used? 'cause I've found out that the chrome i used was enamel base and mr color was lacquer base and lacquer over enamel doesn't work well from what the experts say. Any feedback from you guys would be a great help because i want to try this paint job again on my mg sazabi for next year.

Thanks a lot guys

This looks fantastic. loving the chrome on the internals. as for the paint peeling, did you prime the kit before you painted? The fact that you used different paint types might have also contributed to the peeling.
here's a good guide that i always use.

      Thanks Angry Marine.

i tried priming the shield first with mr surfacer 1000 then coat it with chrome but chrome paint reacted on the primed surface making white spots all over the shield so i sanded it back then re-applied the chrome only and worked well. so i concluded then that the chrome doesn't work with the primer and applied chrome straight to the plastic.

thanks for the site this will be really helpful

I took an interest in Alclad chrome a little while back and I remember many of the tutorials saying you need a good layer of glossy black under the chrome. Maybe if you surfaced it, gloss black, and then chrome?

thanks a lot Gundam Brasil, but there still a lot for me to learn, I'd just followed mtomczek tutorial on how to paint this titanium finish and hoped for the best. paint peeling off is still a problem :(

So shiny x) Just curious, how much time did you leave in between for spraying each different color coat?

thanks, each coat has been given a week to cure... actually i can only work on my kits on my day off, i can't work in the morning cause i have to get ready to go to work and at night it's too cold and sometimes rained here to paint.

Holy.. This looks amazing, I also like the way you pose the Sinanju

I'm very tempted to get a Sinanju, but I dont think I feel confident enough to work on it, maybe on summer 2011, I'll see lol

thanks, sure you can do it, it just takes a little hard work and patience because of the quantity of the parts and the gold trims but once finished it's all worth your time :D

Really well done. A lot of people when using clear colors don't seem to get an even coat all the way around. Here it looks like you did just that and the red looks amazing! I like the silver that you used on the frame as well.

Would you object to me featuring your kit on my site?

Do you have a link to that mtomczek's tutorial? I'm interested in doing something like this except in gold/yellow instead of red.

Great build by the way! Looks great.

hey jokster! am also from the philippines. I saw a silver rad spray can of rj london too and since i'm not that much knowledgeable about paints, can I just apply that on the Sinanju? And where did you buy your Clear reds? I don't have an airbrush unfortunately, but spray can substitutes could be helpful.

hey kabayan, did you mean "silver red spray can" or the chrome of rj london? but anyway yes you can apply rj london paints on sinanju or any plastic kit just use it lightly because canned paints sprays thick coats and might cause bleeding and ruin your paint job, for clear red paints in can try lil's hobby shop at sm megamall they have tamiya spray cans that you can use

yeah sorry i meant the silver red spray can. do you think it will do? i've read other custom paint jobs requiring to paint the red parts black-chrome-clear red, but since i don't want a metallic finish(i just want a glossy, non-metallic red), would the single rj london spray can work? or do i have to worry about their hues, i mean they may have different shades of red.

the rj london spray will do if your going for the glossy finish.

the black-chrome-clear red procedure is done to give the chrome more of metal look/shine especially when using the alclad type of chrome which requires a gloss black enamel base so when the clear red paint is applied it comes out really shiny.

And for the different shades or uneven coats its more common problem when painting the clear paints for example the clear red if you apply the first thin coat it will come out more pinkish than red and as more coat is applied the darker the red becomes, it be best to try it out first on some plastic bottles or runners just to see how much coat you need to get your desired color depth.

try this link it shows some pointers in using spray cans http://www.youtube.com/user/hobbylink#p/u/28/XQTZKBm6aOc

Hi Jokster, i also plan to build my Sinanju following mtomczek tutorial bcoz i was amazed by his shiny candy/red sinanju. and now i see that yours are as good! wow... really nice... you are not only good in painting ur kit, and also very good in taking nice shots, i love how you post them and pictured them. very nice!
Can i ask, your layers: prime surfacer 1000 --> rj londong chrome --> red+orange mr hobby's lacquer --> gloss topcoat.
You skip the gloss black before the chroming, does this means ur kit will not turn out to be as shiny if you apply the gloss black? (just as you've explained that gloss black is to make the red shinier?) But to me, your sinanju already very nice & shiny!
I am not sure about your peeling off problem, but high chance it is because you have sanded the prime layer, and applied the chrome directly on plastic. it means you do not have the primer layer. we know without primer, the paint won't stick so "permenantly".
I don't have a airbrush, i plan to handpaint my sinanju (cause handpaint I know I can get all the colors with Mr Hobby, not sure if i can find the chrome color). If I go for hand spray, i might have a problem, to get all the colors i need in the spray cans

thanks david1981, yes I've skipped the gloss back base for the chrome i'd just thought that the chrome paint that i use was shinny enough for me after i tested it on some runners, but some chrome paint do require the gloss black base for it to really shine.
thanks for the input on the peeling issue that may be it, when i did this job i really need to sand the prime because it was reacting with the chrome making white spots all over, still don't know why that happened.
I've seen you're PG wing and your hand painting skill on the kit was awesome, had the same problem here because i can't find the mr color chrome paint,i hope you can find one for your sinanju :D
