Frustration w/ Paypal

I'd hate to put up serious posts and I hope that this is appropriate here...
I've been making purchases through Hobby Search and Amiami and paying through Paypal for most. Recently I've received an email from Paypal indicating that I am nearing my sending limit and need to "Get Verified" to lift the limit. To do so they say I can do 1 of 2 things: 1) Provide my bank account or 2) Apply for their credit card. I feel rather uncomfortable with both of these and I'm opting to do neither! Which means my days of using Paypal may be over... (At least that's how it is for me in the US; I can't say it's the same situation for Paypal account users outside of US).
It's a bit problematic since I already have a few things on preorder on both HS and Amiami which will get me over the limit. Both sites are only doing Paypal for the moment as their only method of payment. I wonder if I could contact them to arrange a different payment method but if not, I might have to cancel some of those preorders I was looking forward to getting T_T...
Has anyone else out there had the same situation happen to them? What'd you do about it? I'm open to suggestions on what I could do.
I'm gonna post a more joyous and enjoyable post later tonight to counter all this gloominess I'm feeling atm!

Why don´t you get verified? ._.;
It´s better and so easy!
Note that I´m from outside US. ^^;
I'm just being more cautious. I mean now putting my bank account out there is now just more information out there about me than I really prefer to lend out. I know they say it's secure, again, I'm just being cautious before doing so. I'll read more posts and see if I am convinced.
Use your CC instead of bank account...
It´s safer and less trouble if something happens. ^^;
But paypal is so safe. ^^;
Otherwise you shouldn´t used it to buy previous loots. ^^;
Unless I'm missing something, the two options I listed were the only methods available for me. It may be a restriction they have in US but not in other places. I think I'll contact them and see if that's an option.
Oops...
Use a Credit Card... ^^;
Sorry... ^^;
That's the thing... they're telling him to list his bank account or apply for THEIR credit card... not just any credit card. :/
Had the same thing a few weeks back. If got verified by linking to my bank via direct debit. Outside the US we didn't have the credit card option. Seemed a bit of a hassle to get verified but it works the same for me as money came immediately out of the same bank account before via my debit card.
Mines I use a CC. ._.;
Only if your CC is a international type by master, visa or American Express.
Verified is the way to go. I've used Paypal for many years now and appart from one dodgy moment where they locked my account for supicious activity where there wasn't any, its been fine.
The flip side is if you join it to a visa card and have a problem then you can simply cancel the card with your bank and then link paypal to a new card later so you really do have complete control, that and paypal acts as a nice proxy for you to keep your banking details safe when trading online.
I've had a verified paypal account, (With my bank account) since 2002. Not a single problem and extremely convenient. Paypal is very trustworthy. Have you ever spoken to them over the phone? They are very, very nice.
Paypal is as legit and secure as any other, there's no reason to be worried.
your limit is reset monthly anyways.
I'm pretty sure thats just withdrawal limit
Actually its both sending and withdrawal. I'm not really concerned about the limit, I don't spend more than $100 a month buying figures online.
I understand feeling a bit nervous, but it is best to Verify. After all, PayPal is taking just as much risk on you being some random person they don't know & haven't verified
I've had my account verified via Bank Account option for years and there have been no problems. They can't take money from your bank unless you OK it anyway (and if something ever happens, like a hack or something and your money from your bank account has issues - your Bank has your back too)
link a debit card? which is like a credit card but lets you put how much money you can put in it ... which is quite good ^^
but credit card you can charge back and debit card you can't :P
As long as you have money in your paypal balance you can chargeback no matter what you use. Bank account, credit card or debit.
you could, but some times, paypal does not agree with you, then there's nothing you can do about it. with Credit card. If paypal dosen't agree, you can still get a chargeback.
I totally understand your concern. With all the ID theft and fraud going on, it does pay to be cautious. You can never reduce your risk to zero unless you pay with cash, I suppose, but it is possible to minimize your risk. I find PayPal highly convenient and have been verified for years, however, I do not have my main bank account attached to it. I have a separate checking account that only ever has a small balance that I use for PayPal. It's sometimes a pain to have to deposit money in it every couple of months, but it wouldn't be the end of the world for me if that bank account got compromised. More of a concern are my credit cards. I had a number stolen last year, and while my credit card company was cool about it and I wasn't held responsible for the false charges it was quite a scare as well as a hassle.
That's pretty much the concerns I'm worried about. I was also thinking of doing a separate bank account for this as an option. Like you said, it's a hassle but if it gives me peace of mind...
Not sure if its available where your from but you could try looking for a pre-paid VISA card of sorts thats available, purchase one of those and have at least $1 (paypal usually withdraws $1 to verify the card). Then use this prepaid VISA card to verify your paypal account, after that just spend whatever funds are left in the VISA card and let it sit at the bottom of your wallet. Viola your paypal account is verified.
I got Paypal verified via my credit card. Since I already gave them my credit card information, I didn't see any problem verifying that I am indeed the legitimate owner of that credit card. So Paypal put a 4-digit code in a small charge to my monthly card statement, and I entered that code to get my account verified.
If you do not wish to opt for the Paypal verification process, perhaps you can ask if the online retailers will accept telex transfer. It's more cumbersome and costly (due to bank fees adding onto the original payment amount), but it's a secure way to send money.
...I thought that you needed to provide a bank account to use paypal... So do you use paypal as a middle man? Regardless, I have no problems with giving them my account (and actually thought about getting their card).
PayPal is actually pretty trustworthy. I dont go for Credit Cards in-case I over spend. Debit-Cards also do the job. Just get your account verified, its convinent and safe. I got my CC verification on the 1st day I got my PayPal account. no problem for me even till now.
A separate bank account is my suggestion. Simply keep the minimum balance in there and add sufficient funds when making a purchase.
As a long time member of Paypal I say register. I know your afraid but you go threw HS they got hacked awhile ago didn't they. It is as safe as any bank an you can always remove your info when ever it is not in use . Open up a second bank account for Paypal only and put money in there as you need it
If you have both saving and checking account, you can just give Paypal the checking account. But remember don't leave large amount of cash in the checking account until you make payment for something (Phone Bill, etc). Well there are never any 100% safe way to deal with online trading, so always keep your eyes on your own accounts.
I'm not based in US and I'm verified.
Not to mention I have multiple paypal acconts all verified.
It's easy to get verified.
Get yourself a prepaid visa card and you're done my friend.
Oh wait!
How do you fund your paypal in the first place if you don't link to your bank or your credit/debit card? o_O
You can do it but for limited amounts of money and I think the funding procedure is slower since they have to make more confirmation...
I've been using my credit card for my purchases but i guess up to the limit, I won't be able to use it again until I am verified. they'll ask for the bank account or their CC; once they have that I think I can go back to still using that same CC I've been using if I wanted to. pretty ridiculous...
Just let them charge you for the verification.
That 1 dollar money will go back to you as your paypal fund anyway.
Call your CC company after 3 hour you link your card and ask for the expuse number. ^^
If the ID theft guys really wanted to get you, they'd get you regardless of paypal verification or not. I understand your wanting to keep your ID safe and all, but you can't even go to an ATM, buy gas, or eat out at a restaurant without being at a risk for ID theft.
I've had paypal for years and I don't think they ever charged me without my knowing it. Even when buying from HS, if they wanted to charge me they'd send me a bill where I'd have to confirm the purchase. On the other hand, before they accepted paypal the CC I had with them automatically deducted when the preorder came in. If I recall properly, let's not forget that HS got hacked and their CC databank was at risk, not the paypal accounts.
I really don't like Paypal, though I use it quite a bit. I've got mine linked to a separate checking account in case there's a problem. I joined way back when it was starting out, and there were a LOT of problems and issues happening with it before eBay bought it up (anyone remember that huge class action lawsuit?). Things like taking money out of people's bank accounts without permission when someone filed a dispute. I don't know if that still happens... but I do know that I'm upset with how easily money IS taken out for certain things... especially websites like Facebook with their Facebook credits and viral game's "cash". It's worrisome that it's possible for someone else to sign up with your email address on Facebook, and it would automatically charge your Paypal account.
I'm still fighting with them over changing my maiden name to my married one. In order to do it, they want me to fax or mail them an unaltered copy of my marriage license. I'm definitely not comfortable with sending them an official document with not only my SSN, but also my husband's. I've asked if I can "white out" all but the last 4 digits, and they said they won't accept it. Even though they don't have my SSN on record to verify, as I signed up when bank and CC were enough. So my choices are to continue to let people know that it's my maiden name on the account (which people fuss because of "verified" addresses, and send it with the maiden name anyway, which cause problems with my military APO PO), or delete my long standing account and start over with a new account with a new email.
I'd feel a LOT more comfortable if Paypal was governed by the same rules that banks have to follow... or even if they had legislation that was particular to them. I understand they deal in large amounts of money and take some risk... but that's part of the equation when starting a business like this, and all the more reason that their customers should have proper legal recourse in case they screw up.
I'd get verified :D
It helps, and is a breeze to do ^^
I've been using my PayPal for two years and apart from one time when my bank account type changed and PayPal locked me out. I've had no problems.
One call to PayPal customer service (Just shout "Help" at the phone and you get a real person eventually) and it was sorted :D
Allow me to ease any concern you have over linking your paypal account to your bank account by telling you how earlier this week, I had a mysterious charge for almost $100 go through my paypal account for some kind of web hosting. They even put some silly note in that said "I am happy with the service provided and will not charge back under any circumstances." I immediately challenged the charge. They said it would take around 10 business days to investigate, but I got an email back about four hours later that they'd ruled in my favor and gave me my money back.
I had a fairly weak password on the account that was there from before I verified the account. I'll take the blame for it this time... :P
