Student Kills Intruder with Samurai Sword…
…after PlayStation and laptops stolen.

From Gizmodo:

Holy crap. Detectives are still interviewing a John Hopkins University student who fatally lacerated the upper body of a man breaking into his off-campus residence overnight. The suspect also suffered a nearly-severed hand, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The house is home to four undergrads who had already had a Sony PlayStation and two laptops stolen earlier on Monday.
And when one of the students heard noises at about 1am, he went to downstairs to investigate armed with the sword. He saw that the side door to their garage had been pried open, and inside, was lunged at by the suspect.

Wow… don’t mess with gamers, huh? Not sure what I would have done, but killing the intruder would have been the LAST option (if my or loved one’s life were in danger).

What would you do in this situation?

I think I would have done the same thing. I keep 2 katana in my house and would rather prevent any further danger to my family. I have had things stolen from my house before that I have put a lot of effort into getting.

agreed. housebreaking is a SERIOUS problem in the Philippines, robbers come in armed to the effing teeth - shouldn't we have a chance to fight back?

I think it was reported before in the news that a theif got salvaged by the citizens of a certain neighborhood. The police where like "this should teach them not to break in houses."

And yes, I recomend kill-the-burglars in the philippines. They are so annoying. feeding their famalies with stolen properties. It's digusting regardless of the intentions. Fight back, they kill and steal. Don't and the same still happens.

I suspect it could be serious. After all say family A has food and family B lacks food, then the solution aren't for family B to steal food from A because then A will lack food. Accepting people stealing if they are poor is the same as accepting anarchy and in an anarchy nobody will work in a productive way and poverty will get even worse.

I heard a quote, but how true it is, I don't know. It was about someone who was sworn in on the bible to defend himself before the judge, when he said, "I only pulled the trigger. What happened after that was between him and God."

        He had a point!

The thing is that the intruder lunged at him, so he had every right to defend himself. He probably didn't intend to KILL the intruder, but hey, what can you do. Plus, it was probably pretty dark being 1AM, so I am hoping no charges will be pressed.

Needless to say that no one else at the school will be messing with this samurai mofo ever again xD

Hell he had every right to kill the man for being in his house.. PERIOD! Here in Ohio we have whats called the Castle Law. Very handy law, California doesn't have. Basically it states.. that Your home is your castle.

I really doubt that anything will happen to him, since he was well within his rights as his life was in danger. At most he'll probably get a stern talking to about weapons if this complex was on campus.

Honestly, if someone is breaking into my house I am not going to be defending myself with a wooden sword. In the first place I would have called the cops and locked myself somewhere and made sure everyone else was safe but if I was dead set on protecting my property I would want the greatest advantage possible over my adversary. Would be pretty lame if you attacked with a bokuto and didn't score a knockout with your first blow and he pulled a real knife/gun right?

Best thing you can do is exactly that.. Make sure you are in one room.. that has one entrance.. and call the police. Then in a very loud voice, clearly state that you are ARMED (wether you are or not.) and that you have called the police.

I can wake up and in an instant have it in my hand. I would not ever want to use it on someone or anything but I have already been attacked in my house by thugs operation out of the rent houses across the street and suffered permant injuries, so I would make sure any attacker-invader doesn't make it out healthy. Didn't learn any moves from the 2-d sidescreen fighter games, just from using it to cut weeds and small tree limbs. . . .

little extreme... I don't own such dangerous weaponry so I wouldn't be able to replicate this situation. If I were forced into such a situation, I'd use a blunt object instead. Less likely to cause death and more likely to cause a lot of pain.

Hell honestly, if you come onto my property period, and I don't know you.. And you start causing trouble. I'm shooting. ^_^ I'm not a violent person, mind ya.. I just lived next to a drug infested apartment building for too many years. Had Drug deals happen in my driveway.. Luckily while I was living there never got broke into. So I count myself fortunate there. But, Crime is a horrid rampant thing, I don't wanna beat the intruder to death.. Don't want him to suffer.. I want him dead. Period end of story.

Oooh, Crime does change a person.. I've been mugged once. It changed my opinion on a great many things.. Was beaten up. Pretty good. Didn't have anyway of fighting back, all I could do was defend myself the best way I could until they stopped beating up on the white guy. (And yes one was armed with a pistol. and I wasn't at the time) Four on one. Ain't good odds no matter the situation. It was shortly after that, that I became an Armed Citizen. I pray to god, I never ever! have to use one of my firearms in the defense of my own life. And I also pray to god, I never ever have to kill anyone. Like I said. I'm not a violent person. But, I will defend myself, and my family

I am.. By stating what happened to me, and hoping by discussing what happened to me.. And why I carry a firearm. Will help people realize, that tough on crime doesn't mean better prisons or longer prison sentences. It means, Don't allow it Anywhere! Stop it dead in its tracks. And hoping that by these discussions.. People will realize, it isn't the firearm that is evil.. its the person holding it with evil intention.

Yeah. I have to say that the fact that 100% of the times I have been robbed has been by foreigners changed my point of view on the open border policy. Also since people like that hangs around stations here I tend to use the car, specially if I suspect I might be home after sunset.

I wouldn't mind having a gun, but I can't swing the cost right now. Dad was going to give me one of his when the department updated their gear, but the voters turned the extra millage down. And I've got enough training with most melee weapons that I would make it quick. (Beheading is hard, but a quick thrust through the heart and lungs works.)

As I pointed out in a comment above, robbery and housebreaking are HUGE problems in my country. There are gangs of criminals roving with weaponry and skills designed expressly to rob people and places and they kill people who get in their way. I am totally behind the sword-swinging student's actions - he did the right thing; the house had already been robbed before so he was primed to protect what stuff remained.

I'm not normally one for guns or violence but put the thieves who robbed me (in separate incidents) of my keitaidenwa or the guy who slashed my BF's bag, and I'll stomp their faces into the ground.

You have my sympathy.. Nobody likes to be a victim. And Nobody should ever have to be. Honestly its reasons like what you describe there is the biggest reason why the NRA highly suggests a well informed and armed population. I'm not sure of what a Keitaidenwa is.. But I'm sure its not something I'd wanna be at the receiving end of ^_^

Don't worry, if nothing else.. it may sound silly.. but Karma will pay the people who hurt you back.

breaking his hands would have been a better option, but that would lead to more complications in the long run. most probably even this act could lead to some sort of complications. its the fault of the thief for lunging at an armed person instead of running away.

Time it takes you to phone the police and wait in a corner praying that they get their before the intruder finds you? Usually 10+ minutes.
Time it takes to grab a gun (or other weapon) and forcibly remove the miscreant from your home? Usually under 3 minutes.
Teaching all criminals everywhere that crime pays in hot steel? Instant and priceless.

I've never had to defend myself or my family from a home invasion, and I pray I never will. But I would have ended up doing the same thing this guy did. You try not to kill, but you DON'T LOSE ether, if the criminal dies he dies.

I wouldn't want to actually KILL him but I'll surely try to deal a near-fatal damage. Or maybe decapitate something out of him that'll make LIFE MUCH HARDER FOR HIM. Oh my... that sounded so sadistic.

Maybe looking for a chance to cut of 4 fingers from his right arm... definitely not cutting his arm. Since I have Airsofts and Penknives (knives smartly disguised as pens) at home, I'll prolly shoot him non-stop with the airsoft. Won't kill him, but will definitely cause staggering pain.

If I did that I would go to jail for years (maybe for life). The reason is that the legal system here will treat the burglar as a victim and the house owner as the bad guy. You can even be charged/sued for compensation if a burglar has an accident because he falls through a hole in the floor because you are replacing the floor in the living room and he missed that in the darkness O_O

It happens once in a while what people are jailed for possession of illegal firearms and then the newspapers writes that the guy bought the gun because something "promised" to kill him and the police didn't care because "he haven't done anything yet so we can't do anything". They might as well say "come back and report him once he killed you".

Another story. Some guy interrupts some burglars and ends up shooting one of them in the rear. The house owner ends up jailed for attempted murder (the gun was too weak to kill even with a good hit!) while the burglar ended up being the victim in a legal sense. The burglary and the shooting was treated as two independent cases.

That's how it actually works in some European countries. I think the most extreme case of law aiding the criminals has to be in the UK. Politicians are still against giving guns to the standard police even though the criminals has them and shoots at the police.

USA has it's issues with laws protecting the criminals too. The best example would be the double jeopardy thing from the constitution. It means that the state shouldn't be able to harass people with charges all the time and to avoid that once a person is charged for a crime and proven not guilty he can't be charged for that crime again, nomatter what happens. As a result stories like the following appears: some guy gets charged for killing two young women because he enjoyed doing so. He ended up being not guilty by the court and he went outside to the press and said something like this "I have beaten the system. Everything they said about me is true and I did it, but they couldn't prove it and now I can never go to jail for it". The police continued to work on the case though and ended up sending him 10 years to jail for lying under oath in a courtroom (he declared that he didn't do it in the first trial).

I don't know what it is with modern laws and protecting criminals. Sure some of the laws protecting them are old (specially the double jeopardy one) but lately it has gone a lot worse. It's like the rebellious people from the 70'ties have ended up in places where they make the laws or something. I mean politicians talking about banning the police from recording riots to get evidence seems like a far out idea (video should be able to prove if a person did something or not. If the person is innocent then the video will show that too), but such wishes actually comes from elected politicians O_O

I'm not sure. Europe suffers from proclaimed communists who claims the police and the state(legal system) are evil. They think you can ignore laws you disagree with and it shouldn't have consequences (isn't this the definition of anarchy?). Personally I wouldn't call them communists though because of stuff like their view on education. They basically want everybody to be equal and this means somebody shouldn't learn something somebody else didn't learn and as a result nobody should learn anything. I understand communism as power to the people and education gives power so communism isn't about banning the general population from getting an education.

However I think the issue is more complex than just blaming one group of people. I think the real issue is the politicians. If one party wants no consequences for criminal offences, then the other parties goes "oh yeah, we shouldn't punish them. It's cruel and primitive" because nobody should steal votes on ideas like that. The result is that regarding some issues we end up with a one party system where you can't vote for the point of view you have. It sounds silly but look at the media and see how it really works. A new idea came out a week ago and had support from around 60% of the politicians. One guy said no, and all of a sudden support dropped below 20% just because one person stated that he think it's a bad idea. The line "each elected politician should only vote in his/her personal view" is a thing of the past even though it's still in the constitution >_<

It's the politicians, the only reason why they do that is just to protect their own sorry ass if they get involved in doing that sort of stuff, pretty shameless, a politician is someone who's supposed to lead, not be a redundant weed smoked hippie and disco dude, it's embarassing. And these people that do the crime. It's scary where they end up, as your doctor or something along those lines.

That is why when you use a weapon, you shoot (or aim) to kill. It is a horrible thought to think about but with the legality of the system today, the only way to keep the burglar from seeking legal action is to make sure he is dead. Also it depends on what state you are in... if you are in some wussy state such as New York, New Jersey, Michigan or California... then you are screwed. However, if you are in Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma, or Nebraska. The state's legal system, recognizes the right to protect one's property. Mainly because they are more countrified.

Can't really say much since my house has never been broken into... but "lunged at by the suspect"? To be fair, I would have taken at least a steel bat to the burglar too, potentially lethal injuries be damned.

The student was living in an area with confirmed burglaries, and in the dead of the night he would have grabbed whatever weapon offered him the greatest security. And once he entered the room with the source, he was jumped by the suspect. The nerve of the damed burglar. Of course the student would assume that his life was in danger, and proceed to hack up the burglar.

The thing is, for all the trouble after, the guy didn't even get a rare item dropped. XD

Here in MALAYSIA, if you kill an Intruder into your house your going to serve time in the jail. The law here is if he didn't harm you u shoulden't harm them. There are new where the robber have kill the victim just to get a few ringgit only. There other day there is new about a lady who ram a snatch thief, the thief smash her car window to get to her purse on the passenger sit. The thief die and now the lady is in trouble for killing a snatch thief.I think my country have a very stupid law.

First I would use my weapon (that is closest to me) on their kneecap, just so they know the severity of my disapproval... then I aim for their heart. You never mess with a weapons collector. Especially weapons collector who live out in the country cause we know the law... and we don't call the sheriff... our weapons is the sheriff.
