How I got a Les Paul
Ok, any K-On fan will know that Yui's guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherry Sunburst. Naturally a Gibson is beyond the budget of most people, including myself. I've been fiddling on Dad's Strat a little bit, but I thought it'd be cool to have the Epiphone version of Yui's guitar. I've been looking around, but most everybody wants $500 for it, which is still expensive for someone like me.
My husband had the day off yesterday, and it's rare we have time during the day to ourselves since our work schedules often conflict. So we decided to go looking at some pawnshops around town. We were only on our fourth one, and there it was, hung up on display in all its glory. I almost literally squee'd when I saw the price sticker too: $249. HALF of what everyone else has been asking. The lady said she could knock 20% off the price if I chose to buy it. I said I'd think about it, and me and the hubby went home to grab stuff to pawn off to knock even more off the price.
They wouldn't take my stereo (the volume button is finicky) but they did take two new motorcycle helmets for $20 each. After that credit, the 20% credit and tax it was knocked down to $174. Me and hubby split the cost. So in the end, I only used $87 of my own money to acquire this beauty.
Now I guess I gotta learn to play...

Awsome! A quick tip: Tabs are so easy to play, better than chords for some. Tabs are basically what string, and what fret (The bits inbetween the metal bars). Sorry if you already know this, thought I'd help. I have a six year old acoustic named Isabella (Huge Abney park fan, named it after one of their songs). Hope it helps! ^^
Epiphones are quite nice...my hubby had a couple. One thing you need to bear in mind is that a full-fledged Les Paul is a very heavy guitar. It's made of solid dense wood, like ash or maple. So get a nice burly strap with a lot of padding. The guitar will also double as exercise equipment! ^_^ Congrats on an awesome score!
Oh yes, it's as heavy as my Dad's Strat, lol. Definitely gotta get a good strap for it.
I like the one guitar I kept of my hubby's: purple Fender Squier Strat. You just gave me an idea...gotta take a picture of Z (my Obitsu rocker boy) with the Strat. Actually Z has a working amp that I sometimes borrow from him...perfect 1/3 scale for my doll, but it actually works as a real practice amp.
I'm big guitar enthusiast.
It said it's made in China... I'm skeptical but every guitar is unique because there's no way for the wood cut and the wood will be the same dense each time.
I really like to hear how she's sound. :D
According to the Guitar Dater Project website, based on the serial number, my Les Paul was made at the Sae Jung plant in China in July 2007, production #1651. Another site says that as of a few years ago all the Epiphones are being made in China.
Do you know what kind of wood they used to make it? Yeah, of course Epis are made in China now...the only Made In The USA guitars that Gibson still makes are badged as Gibsons. Same deal, pretty much, for Fender, but some of Fender's mid-range guitars are actually made in Mexico. They call them the "Tex-Mex" Strats and Teles. I would actually think there are some good luthiers (guitar craftspeople) down Mexico way.
Don't know much about Epiphones, but I wonder if the dual coils are default? I thought they were supposed to be humbuckers?
What do you mean by dual coils? Those are Humbuckers in the Guitar. Just like in almost every other LP.
sorry, i thought I saw something else from the pictures (>.<)
No problem, everyone makes mistakes^^
Congrats on the new guitar. I've been considering getting an Epi Les Paul as well - I also want one to match Yui's. haha I already bought a bass guitar that matches Mio's Fender Jazz bass. All of my current guitars have tremolo's (whammy bar) which make tuning up, especially after changing strings, a real pain. I'd like a nice solid bridge.
Back when I first started playing guitar, in the mid 80's, Epiphone was really a low quality brand but they have really improved the quality of the instrument so much. The Gibson Les Pauls are fantastic but the extra $4,000 you pay for a good one doesn't get you much more than a nice Epiphone gives you.
I agree with OtakuPantsu - TABs make it so much easier to get started playing. It doesn't take too long to get used to learning how to read them and start playing songs. Learn the basic Major and Minor bar chords and some open chords and you will have a ton of stuff you can play and have fun with.
Congrats on the standard! I have a Epiphone Les Paul Ultra and love it. I thought they were made in Korea?...I guess its just the Ultra's then. If you want a "Gibson" quality, check out the Ultra line if you plan on upgrading. They're lighter, the shape is more contoured for the player, and it has a deep richer acoustic sound rather being bright like Strats. IMO, they're the best quality guitar (new of course) for the price.
I have a left handed Squier P-Bass in Antique Burst finish. Inspired by Mio, looks nigh on exactly the same except to the dials. I played bass before K-ON! and i needed a new one :3 Mio <3
And i am actually left-handed lol
Beautiful guitar by the way ^_^
