Fireworks Competition (Summer Series #3)

Posted by ahbonk [www]

One of the, if not THE most popular fireworks festival in Tokyo is held at Sumida River. Every year, they have two companies battle it out against each other with the prettiest fireworks they can shoot above the waters of Asakusa.

This dates all the way back to the firework craze during the Edo period when two companies Tamaya and Kagiya were the two main competitiors. Onlookers would shout out the company name that they support. The tradition stays till today, where you can still hear people shouting "Tamayaaa~" and "Kagiyaa~" to express their joy over a bunch of lights bursting in the sky.

O-edo Rocket much? :3

More pics and other Japanese activities throughout the year in my blog: http://www.ahbonk.net/?p=901

One tip for next year's festival: book the place one day earlier with your mat and a name label! Also, be prepared for human and phone network traffic jam if you come later than 6pm.

I dunno, after watching 20 minutes of the fireworks the delight wears off fast. How about you?

I've always wanted to see a live fireworks show XD the time they had one at Abekawa (Shizuoka) I was on my way to Tokyo TwT .. But it seems they do it often, so it's just a matter of time before another chance pops up XD

With that many people - I wonder how the girls in kimono could withstand that heat XD
