Kenji's Ultra-Workspace
As my first room post I figured I'd throw in my work area. I'm gradually filling it and am having a load of fun! I'm finding the key is finding a balance between keeping a semi-organized workspace and clutter. I also took some random pictures of stuff- including the tools of my trade (the bikes). Sorry if some are dark- getting the lighting right is a pain! And yes- those are four monitors. The TV is hooked up to the Mac Pro. The newest figure on the bookshelf is Saber- Triumphant Excalibur- and she is awesome. A little late for an entry into Otacool (like almost a year late)- but here it is! Hope you enjoy it!
皆さん、こん位置は。これはぼくの仕事部屋。

This is the main overview of my work area. The area to the right is my roommate's posh palace.

My main work area. As you can see, Kirino has sort of taken over.

Figures are starting to fill in slowly!
だんだん多くなってきた。

びりびり!

Just left of my main work area you can find three characters who can really kick some butt. I do have to step in once in a while and break up fights. You know, the usual- picking out staples, applying burn cream, getting ice for bruises.

ぼくのモルモット

This is where I hide the stapler. Don't want any stapled cheeks- notice there's also a staple remover. Inside you'll also find loads of memory cards, some cash for snacks, ear plugs.

The open cabinets so you can see where most of the wiring goes.

Although it looks like a mess- when it's hidden, it looks a LOT better.

You can see what everything does in the notes sections. I think I overdo hard drive space, but what the hey, I back up everything. I think I have about 13 terabytes lying around.

Total rats nest but power comes from that big UPS above. The gigabit switch attaches to an Airport Extreme sitting on top of the Mac Pro.

I had to put this on the right side - otherwise the power cables would be all over the place. That's another UPS there too.

Our little good luck area with my daughter's name scribbled above.

Bikes bikes and more bikes.

Misaka watching over some of the electrical nav units.
My Garmins. I get lost a lot while on my bike.
iPhone 4 with a Vapor case.
zap!
Newest! Can't decide whether I like Saber or Momohime. Although, I think I love them all!
Haruhi hanging out in the captain's chair.
From the Evil Bike Team.
various memory cards and readers. Too many.
USB bluetooth- anyone use these anymore??
Cowbell from Daisuke Yano- Nagano bike race promoter!
Senjogahara watching over her favorite tools. Although the stapler is hidden away.
Man, that looks so big and spacious. Much bigger than mine for sure.
Radios and bluetooth phone. Can answer my iphone using the handset!
Keyboard slides out.
Kirino is pissed because her figure is out of focus.
Wii for playtime.
Miffy the guinea pig. My officemate.
Taiga is being a little sheepish here.
All the wiring it routed underneath.
Powerline that hooks up to family room.
backup unit powers almost everything.
Backup!
another NAS.
This UPS powers the monitors.
I occasionally set up my laptop here.
Brother and sister-in-law sent this over from Tokyo.
Tools of my trade. Yup- I use these for work. ^_^
Nice setup!
What sort of work you do?
Thanks Danny! I'm the Exec Director for the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association. I do photo and video for fun. Still stuck with a 10D though. :) I'm also working with folks over in Japan and in Oregon to increase tourism/trade!
Oh interesting, you're using a Dell screen along with 2 Samsung screens.
I'm guessing the Dell is an IPS panel with the samsungs obviously being TN ?
If that's the case I'm in the same situation having a Samsung LED screen next to a Dell IPS panel. The different in color rendition between these panels, even when calibrated is just too great. It really annoys the hell out of me. How do you cope ^_^ ???
Aside from that; really nice workspace! It's nice and spacious, not just the desk. Which is easy to get a spacious wide one.. but the whole space around the desk!!
I just love that.
Thanks!! Nah- nothing that special. They're SyncmMaster 2333's with a Dell SP2208WFP (more for the built in camera so I can teleconference.) Yah, the color difference is wacky but I deal. I need to get a real screen calibrator. I've really been meaning to especially since I do so much editing. I've been lucky so far I guess. ^_^;
Ah I see ! And yes, a color calibrator will really help you if your doing editing work. It will streamline the colors on all of your monitors to the best of their ability.
I recently purchased one myself too because i'm doing more and more paid assignments in photography that the output file needed to match what I was seeing both in printed form, and on another person's screen. You won't regret buying it :) ! (The Spyder 3 and up series from Datacolor, I can highly recommend it. Both Mac + Windows compatible and easy to use software)
Yup- been looking at that one! But definitely thanks for the recommendation!
Veryvery nice workplace, I wished i could keep mine clean and tidy (needs to cleanup) btw is that TV also hooked up to ur mac?
Thanks! Yep- TV is hooked up to the Mac. It's great for testing out Powerpoint presentations!
Fellow Oregonian and you look very familiar! Nice looking place~
One idea if you want to keep the figures up on the shelves dust free, get some plexiglass and get it cut to fit the shelf. ^^
If you ride or race bikes, you might have seen me. I was also in the Oregonian a couple years back!
Nope, I don't race bikes. Did you ever attend Sakura Con back in 2000-2001?
nope. that I did not do!
Heh when I first saw this post I thought someone made an office out of their kitchen.
Close. The room flows from the kitchen so we maintained the feel so it fit in nicely. If we went with a more modern look it would have seriously clashed!
Was your daugther's name Mayumi? I was just practicing reading XD, nice place you got there ^0^.
Yep! Her name is Mayumi- and the kanji is the "truth, gentle, beauty" writing.
Lol same here. "I've seen some otaku rooms but I haven't seen an otaku kitchen yet" said to myself; that was my first impression XD. I thought someone's cookin' together with their lovely figures.
Nice shirt! :D
Thanks! CR rules! (Although they were a little laggy last night)
Alright! Oregon represent! :D That is a really really clean room! I can hardly see a speck of dust. Like how you keep everything so organized ^^.
I'm from Portland so nice to see someone from the same state even though you might be from another city or so ^^.
Heck yeah. Just down I-5 in Salem (out of all places). Hey- do you get any of your figures etc in PDX? I've been to Kinokuniya soooo many times but they have a pretty limited selection. That BRS above the cash register has been sitting there for ages.
:D I'm from Oregon too! I live in portland even though technically i am closer to Beaverton than portland. I live right on the boarder of it. VERY close to washionton square mall ^^ Love to see more comrade here in portland :D
Nice. Greenburg exit off of 217?
nope, but pretty close to it.
Cool. At least you have easy access to Uwajimaya!
If there are places to get figures, i'm sure you would know more about it instead of me ^^;. Sadly, the otaku culture here is practically nonexistent and the only time we can get any anime goods locally is during kumoricon.
That's a bummer. I know there's a great place out in Bend but I don't think they stock much in terms of figures. They have lots of Miyazaki stuff. I bought this huge oversized Totoro there.
Agree, i get all my figure whenever i go back to Taiwan to visit.
D= WACOM!
DANG O-O You have a lot of really expensive high tech. things. o-o
wishes to one day have enough to get stuff like that...
study hard and you can!
ahaha =] thanks
squid girl spotted! Thats squidy awsome!
Nice setup. Triple monitor power rules.
Thanks! Oh yeah it does. I run Windows on the right monitor (VMware), e-mail on the left and excel, word, photoshop, indesign etc. in the middle. Sometimes I wish I had four monitors close in instead of the fourth off to the left.
Wow nice sets of bikes~!!
I've been wanting a road bike for a long time.
You have a very tidy workspace (^^)
Thanks! Those are only my non-motorized ones. :D
Awesome place you have
using that now, but mine is silver
This is a really cool room. I like how the wiring is hidden! Very neat.
thanks! took a little work but it was well worth it.
*A* Nice room! Haha, gotta have plenty of bikes if you're in Oregon! I really like how you have all the cables hidden >_< Mine are all over the place!
Always nice to see stuff from another Oregonian!
Thanks! It took a while to drill through everything though.
Great chair ;)
What kind of internet connection do you have? How much up- & download?
Cable. I think 12 down, 2 up.
TABLET I WANT ONE >:D
Awesome place you got there, the color is so warm and cozy ^^
Ooh, nice wallpaper. Do you have a link to that please? :>
I also want xD
shoot. I totally forget where I got it. I just did a google search (images) for misaka mikoto. I remember selecting the large size as a limiter.
Hi, bunny.
bonjour.
Sweet.
oui, j'adore.
You a Kirino fan?
(lol....) KuroNeko ftw! >.<
heh. ummm... yah. i have two kuronekos (kotobukiya) on pre-order. boo yah!
Gorgeous work area, the station is huge. I wish mine was just 1 giant work area instead of 4 small work areas spread throughout my house :0/
Thanks!! Hey DoonDoon- I have a question for you that I'd love to ask you off board. Could you email me at kenjiatobradotorg? Thanks!
This is AWESOME XDDD
Coraline??
