Dual Modded DETOLF

Hard to pick a category for this, but since this is now a center piece in my "room," might as well pick that.
The point of this post though is to show off what you can do by combining two Detolfs into one! I spent the last few weekends constructing a cabinet that could use the glass from two separate Detolfs to make one big all-glass display case.
I made a more detailed post here: http://www.tofunction.com/model/2011/02/detolf-dual-mod/
And this is how it ended up:

Great job!!! In the past I wished they had a wider version of the Detolf, this is perfect. Just curious, are the front panels working doors?
Yup, they definitely work like you'd expect. There's one shot in my blog where you can see it open.
Woah what am I looking at?
That's an Armored Core kit I'm working on. Details are actually on the same blog I posted.
Yeah, I see that. Actually, I was noticing your lightbox post. Not sure if you've already tried this, but for the width issue, you can try shooting from farther back with a longer lens or a more zoomed-in one, this will make it capture a narrower "slice" of the background. (This makes sense if you think of the view your camera sees as a big cone that gets bigger zoomed out, and smaller zoomed in, with the smaller cone, even when the subject looks the same, the area of background captured will be smaller.) A longer lens is also nice in that it gives you room to get in and manipulate the figure, and also to have more freedom with light placements and stuff.
Thanks for the tips...all they do is tempt me though, as I currently only have a point-and-shoot. Someday I'll get a DSLR with some rocking lenses and it'll be good to know these things :)
Even with a P&S you can still zoom it in as far as it'll go. I actually use my point & shoot for a lot of this type of stuff, since any camera looks good when there's bright lights, and I don't have a Macro lens for my real camera.
Oh, good point!
This is actually a really cool idea. It has me wondering if you could get some wider glass cut(or plexi, since the lighter weight might help) into full-width shelves and lose the inner set of "ladders".
I'm due for my third Detolf pretty soon myself.
You absolutely could. My local glaziers want to charge an arm and a leg though, so your mileage may vary if you're trying to do it on a low budget.
wow, impressive work. i was thinking of doing the same thing too, did you use any gloss on the wood?
Satin (low-gloss polyurethane). Any polyurethane will add a bit of a glimmer, but the low-gloss stuff matches normal IKEA furniture pretty well I feel.
This is brilliant and you did an amazing job on it. This really makes me tempted to do something similar with my deltof!
Awesome work!! It looks sweet. I love your Saber and Alicia figures n_n
pretty nice cases
Nicely done! I had a Dual DETOLF once my self, only I used ducktape ^_^
That's fantastic work you did there, thanks for sharing
Nice job on this Detolf mod! I don't think I've seen one this nice before!
Nice going... I still need to weather strip an extension cab I just bought recently. I hate to dust. Have you done anything with the gaps between the glass panels?
Oop's never mind I read the article in the link. Tape is a good idea, I was thinking of clear caulking.
Sakaki!
Wow. This is awesome! Nicely done!
great d(ual)tolf!
Nice mod with the Detolf cabinets. Lovely figure collection, by the way.
Good Collection!!!
That's an excellent work and an excellent figure selection too, nice taste!
Your room is now shining with that amazing "piece of art", congratulations!
excellent work.
Sunlight is bad for figurine
Definitely is, but that light never actually hits the figures. The room is laid out in a way such that the light only hits that back wall. What you see is as bright as it ever gets, and no direct light ever reaches the case.
