Nintendo Retro Toys and Games

Posted by donkey*kong [www]

I recently started a blog which showcases and celebrates the toys and games Nintendo created in the period from the mid 60s to the early 80s, starting with the first board games up to the launch of the Famicom in 1983.

Do you want to find out more about what Nintendo was up to before Mario? Then please check it out at beforemario.com.

Very cool. I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy and love all their old history. I loved seeing your room when you posted pics of it a while back. I've wanted to start my own collection but, alas, it will be quite an expensive endeavor.

(On a side note: Are you the same Erik V who provided pictures/research for Florent Gorges' book?)

Collecting these items can be quite expensive indeed, especially if you are looking for "mint in the box" versions. However, if you do not set your sights on the rarest items and top quality state at the start, than it can be more affordable than you would think. My collection grew over the course of 30 years, gradually expanding and trading/selling items as better versions came my way. I would say he biggest investment is actually time, not money. You have to be willing to put in a lot of time.

On your question: yes, I am the Erik who contributed to Florent's book. But all props go to him (and Isao Yamazaki) for compiling all the information in this book and getting it out in the world. It is really the best book around on this subject.

    Very cool blog!

I actually just picked up a set of Nintendo hanafuda cards and this just continues my fascination with Nintendo. :)
