Laptop or Desktop Comp?
Wed 2011/03/02 09:05 JST

My question is: do you own a laptop or a desktop computer? I've seen a lot of rooms posts, and it seems to me that the majority have laptops.
(I built my own desktop)

I own both.
I use a desktop. I like it better than a Laptop. Laptops are nice for if you need to have your work handy, but otherwise it's just a nice gadget. Still, I wouldn't mind to have one, but not allowed to use it at school, so no fun in that =)
well i own 3 laptops and 2 computers (one is officially dead)
but only one laptop is my own, in my room xD so thats what i use~
Both, I take the Laptop to University with me.
Luckily both have Solid State drives so they're quick - don't think I would go back to using a mechanical drive as my main anymore.
SSD is the way to go ^^
This bed is too small for her.
Now that you mention it...
I'm currently using my dad's desktop, it has too many problems though XD I eventually want to get my own laptop when I go to college.
Wow.. I've always had my own computer sine I was about.. 5.. maybe 6..
Wow, I've been wanting my own laptop since I was about 12, that's when I started to like computers. But my parents always had to pay for something else><
Laptop user here!
I use a laptop because it is portable and I sit more on my bed then on my desk, and I use it at school (I study System Administration).
for downloading I use a Windows Home Server (allways on, so I can download things even when I'm at school).
and my website is also hosted on my own hardware (see my website for more details, also a picture of my laptop, http://g00.nl/7b)
http://g00.nl/7b - where is the edit button -_-'
I am pretty jealous ^^; I should perhaps set up a home server as well.
both^^ but mostly I use desktop to do homework and stuff, I only use laptop when I go somewhere or when i'm outside.
Laptop user for longer then 5 years going switch too Desktop look i like.
the preference + price can't beat desktop ...
Laptop! Since I almost always brought it everywhere XD
Used to have Desktop comp, sadly it's dead now :(
Both of mine are laptops. The main one is my 17" Mac Book Pro I use for posting and such, the Toshiba (14" w/Windows 7) will be used for "out and about" when I get off my lazy posterior and start taking more pictures. (Before the end of the year, I'm looking at a 27" iMac for my home use)
I have both, am currently on my self-built desktop:
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 (Bloomfield - LGA1366 - D0 Stepping)
CPU Cooler - Zalman CNPS990NT
GPU - Gigabyte 1GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 5770
Motherboard - ASUS P6T SE (X58 Chipset)
RAM - 3x OCZ Platinum Triple Channel DDR3 2GB (6GB Total)
HDDs - 1 x Western Digital Caviar 500GB, 1 x Samsung SpinPoint 1TB
ODD - LG DVD Combo Drive
Case - Antec 900 with Extra Fan + 2 Cold Cathodes (Blue)
PSU - OCZ ModXStream 700W (Modular)
Runs just about everything perfectly, Crysis 2 multiplayer demo is flawlessly good.
Sweet gaming rig but you need that SSD upgrade to really make things fly.
yes i do xD
only want two upgrades
one more 5770 and a 120GB SSD
I'd hold off on the 2nd 5770 given how close we are to the HD7xxx series and just focus on getting the ssd. You don't even need a 120GB one if you get a 60GB for the OS and Apps and use your hdds for media storage. Doing this myself and it works great.
yeah but i use a lot of large applications such as Visual Studio 2010 and 2008, XNA and some CS5 Apps. Not to mention games. I want my applications to run fast too, and with Win7 x64, i would only be left with about 40GB for applications. My applications folders total 77GB lol
So In your case, it would be necessary to go to 128GB. This is the one I'm using currently and its a beast: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148348&nm_mc=EMC-GD030111&cm_mmc=EMC-GD030111-_-index-_-Item-_-20-148-348
There is actually a promo code EMCYTZT326 that brings the price down to $230.
nice SSD, i looked at those ones lot when searching
as im in UK im looking to hopefully get this http://www.dabs.com/products/ocz-technology-120gb-vertex-2-sata-ii-2-5--72KB.html
ive only heard good things about it :D
Don't get the Vertex 2. The have had a high failure rate lately and when they changed from 34nm ram to 25nm, the lost significant performance. Stick with this one and you wont regret it:

I adore this drawing of Mio, it crops up a lot and i always love it. :)
Gorgeous drawing of Mio.
No option for both?
yea.. i use both too =(
Macbook Pro and PC desktop user here, love them both, been building Pc since i was around 12
i got both. my laptop is my work computer while my desktop is my entertainment computer
I started using a laptop while I was commuting to school, I never updated my desktop after that and have since given it to my brother. I still need to get a desk to get a desktop set up. I find that it's a lot easier to do computing and hang out with the girlfriend if I'm not tethered down to a specific spot.
Well I also own both, Since laptop offers me mobility while a desktop really is my performance rig. But mostly I used my desktop since it really is my main base for entertainment and work while laptop is just for work presentations and away-from-home related things
it really depends how u will use your machine.
if you're at home most of the time or work at home, play high end games and stuff id recommend a desktop, it just have more power than laptop even high end ones.
if you're always on the go laptop would be more ideal.
but just get both. you dont have to buy at the same time buy the one you think you need more then buy the other one later. it really helps to own both machine
Just a laptop for me. Small, does what i want it to do, i dont play games, portbable. All win for me
Both. I used to have a laptop only when I thought they were cool but htat one broke down and I immediately got myself a desktop one to replace it. All in all I think desktops are way better suited for having at home. You can modify them better and fix more easily when part of them breaks.
1 netbook
1 laptop
1 desktop for emergency :D
I spend the majority of my time on a desktop, but I do switch to my laptop from time to time.
Laptop + Netbook here.
Laptop being used at home a lot, netbook being taken out.
I'd say Desktop is best for price + performance.
I intend to get a desktop then keep the netbook as backup, use laptop on the go.
I own both, but I mainly use my desktop to do my streams and downloads while my laptop is mainly used for mobility, since I like to work around the house and school. :]
I thought this had something to do with k-on. -_-
I own two notebooks (HP dv6 3131TX and Dell Inspiron 1525) and a desktop (custom box - AMD Athlon x2, 2GB RAM, X700 graphics). I mainly use my notebook and ended up putting my desktop in the lounge-room for the rest of the family to use. The notebook I mainly use is faster and much quieter, so it's not a bad choice. I use it with an external monitor, keyboard (Filco cherry brown) and mouse for ergonomic reasons. As far as performance goes, I haven't had a problem for web development, Photoshop, watching videos or even gaming (Runes of Magic, Starcraft 2, Dragon Age 2 demo -- soon full game, mostly). Both the latter too are on medium graphics - all in an AU$999 notebook (HP dv6 3131TX). I also have the benefit of battery backup, so if the power goes out I don't have to worry about losing work (though you can get a UPS for the desktop).
*latter two
laptops are for sissis^^
Desktop for me as laptops are too limited because of power and heat limitations. Bought a netbook for my last trip to Japan and it was quite slow even for surfing the web. Upgaded the hdd to an ssd in the netbook and its loads faster. Also running an ssd in my desktop.
I'm using a laptop as a desktop. 15" MacBook Pro hooked up to an external monitor, mouse, and KB.
I want to get a real desktop and only use my laptop for travel and work, but the Mac Pros are so freakin' expensive.
I'm using a laptop but I would rather have a desktop.
but right now laptop is my only choice as I travel alot for school and never know when I have to pack up and move so laptop makes life easier. I thought laptops were cool but mine has lots of problems like low battery usage (actually my battery burnt out now and too expensive to replace) constantly overheating;; such a headache I can't wait to get a desktop ~
I own three desktop computers, but I'm using the one I built back on 2008. It has a Core 2 Quad, 2 GB RAM, HDD 500 GB SATA2...
You'll probably find that most people here own both, and use both. It's just convenient. Each has it's ups and downs. If anything I use my laptop more than my desktop, it's portable and I don't have to be sat at my desk to use it. But a desktop can hold extra hard drives and is easier to upgrade.
I mostly use my laptop for school and homework, which is what I do most of the time! I do have a self-built gaming desktop though, even though I rarely use it anymore.
Otherwise I just use my laptop for random miscellaneous internet browsing and email checking
iPad, I mean.
Both here - mostly netbook/notebook user however. Desktop is for work and things that require more screen real estate.
I own both a custom desktop which is my main pc for almost everything and a laptop to connect to the office to scan documents.
I have a laptop because I fly around all the time, and it's just inconvenient with a desktop.
If you are not a serious gamer, laptop is better. You save space, and it is portable. Yes, laptops with powerful specs can handle high graphics games but they become hot too fast (cooling pads does not help), and the game gets laggy. It depends - if im in an air conditioned room then the laptop can handle the heat, at least.
Well, to be technical, I have both — three of the one and three of the other, all humming together.... but it is a rather unusually elaborate set-up. (^_^)
I have a laptop and a desktop.
Was suppose to say "BOTH" but my laptop got stoln from m a few months ago when a burglar got into our house.
At the moment i'm with a desktop.

I have a desktop and two laptops. I used to use the desktop all the time, but I started my computer science coursework. Since I am a commuter student at my university I use my laptop all the time now, even at home. I've only turned on my desktop a couple of times since getting my macbook pro (mainly to transfer files over). Also because all my schoolwork is on the laptop, and because it's actually faster and more convenient to use than my desktop. I still use my desktop for when I have that rare urge to play a game, or need Windows only software. The 2nd laptop I own is really old (ibm thinkpad x40) and just kinda sits around my room.
