500$ nendoroid?
Thu 2011/03/03 18:14 JST

Wow, I know older nendoroids are rare and Ive seen some people buy them for over 100$, but 500$?
Come on, people. Have some common sense.
I can understand if you have all other 99 or so but honestly, that is already a big waste of money.
When collecting becomes and addiction that is a serious matter.
Saw this up on Mandarake.

yeah but that one is a rare exclusive Nendo I believe
Like anything you collect, how much you spend depends on how much your willing to spend. It's the same with any other type of hobby.
$500? I'd use that money to buy an iPad2.
it may be a waste of money for you, but not for the person buying it
There's nothing wrong with spending 500 or w/e amount on the item, if you truly like it.
I agree, this post makes the poster just look arrogant and closed minded.
Honestly, who are you to judge if 500 for a nendo is too much? =/ Not to say I would touch that, Nendos aren't my thing so my wallets safe.
Gonna have to agree with this as well.
Also, she's usually $600 and I once sold a Ryofuko-chan nendoroid for $430.
As much as I've never spent that much on anime merchandise, it really takes something to understand the passion people have for this hobby to the point where they are willing to spend $500 to collect something.
I mean, the cost of a normal nendoroid is ridiculous on its own. It really depends on how much you have and are willing to pay for your hobby. Your mileage may vary, I guess.
First let me make it clear, I am a nendoroid collector. Regardless, I find your comment offensive, especially for a member of the figure.fm community. I am sure many on this site had spent much more than $500 on a Dollife. And many computer gamer would spend much more to get the newest graphic card and CPU. While others would spend over $500 on a fancy meal. Car collectors can spend hundreds of thousands on a rare car. When you consider what other are willing to pay for their hobby; Spending $500 on a Nendoroid is not even close to over-the-top if the person is a nendoroid collector or a fan of the figure.
I would encourage you to be more open minded about how people choose to spend their money. I understand in an ideal world we will donate all our money to starving children or earthquake victims; But it's not a bad thing for people to spoil themselves every now and then as long as we stay within our means.
you see, Shadowgram, the problem is what you are doing is trying to 'justify' your expenses. Now, I never said 500$ was alot of money. You and me both know that comparing a 45$ MSRP nendoroid to a thousand dollar MSRP Dollfire is absurd.
what am I talking about is different. It is called 'markup'. The item above has been marked up, what, 1000% in price? the thousand dollar dollfire has not been marked up at all. Saying they have the same value to an otaku is ridiculous, the dollfire has tons more value, even if that little nendoroid was reselling for a thousand dollars as well.
Another issue you brought up is 'rarity' and 'collectability' comparing them to sports cars. The problem is most nendoroid are less than 3 years old. Young people buy nendoroids thinking they will be valuable in the future, that is perceived value, not real value, yet. Perhaps they will be worth money, who knows, but from my experience and looking at the current market trend I would guess only a handful of them. Another big issue is reprints. I know max factory has done reissues of figmas, not sure about nendoroids, but that will ruin the collector's value. Don't make me bring up beenie babies.
Now, if I sounded rude or offending in my opening remarks, I apologize, that was not my intent. I just wanted to see what other people thought about this and I definitely got my answer, lol! If I was still in college this would definitely be essay worthy material. I am amazed at how many of you got defensive so quickly.
Let me clarify one point for you. This particular nendoroid is NOT available for anyone to buy. It's actually exclusive to those who have already purchase the entire anime DVD set (total cost of the DVD set is definitely >$500) So it's actually a rare unit not easily bought by anyone who is not in Japan especially since it requires redeeming a proof of purchase for the entire DVD series.
But even disregarding the rarity of this nendoroid, markup is seen in ALL merchandise. Most recent example will be the Super Bowl, or World Cup tickets. People will easily pay a few fold more for a ticket to an event. Using your argument, it will be even dumber to pay for an experience since there is no chance for reselling or future profit. As you point out, supply and demand will dictate the appropriate price for all goods and services, so if there is a reprint in the future the price will certainly adjust itself based on the supply-demand curve. However, at the current supply level, this particular nendoroid does warrant it's current price. If that price is deemed to high for the market, the demand will fall and price will fall also. And consider this nendoroid is available on a widely visit online store by collectors and not some closed door dealing. I will favor a free market model will likely work well in this case. The law of economics is pretty robust system after all.
I am not trying to defensive about spending $500 of a "doll", it's really an interesting conversion. But I would like to remain you that many people are willing to pay markup for all kinds of silly things (a car for example which will certainly loose value overtime) and is really not a indication that Otaku are especially stupid or addicted to collecting. After all we are all human and human are never known to be rational beings. And it's human to strive for happiness, even if that happiness means spending money on silly things with marked up price.
I agree if I am still in college this will certainly be an interesting essay topic (for philosophy not economics though).
Cheers
the seller can post whatever price they want. if someone is willing to pay 500 dollars for it, then it's worth it for that person. all comes down to what this nendoriod or toy means to that idiviual. if i really want this nendoriod, i wouldn't mind paying big money for it.
$500 for that. I will let go. I will use the money to buy something else. Specially, there has many nice figure coming out in the next few months....PoorPoor. Anyway, I would like to see if someone real going to buy this from them (Mandarake must make alot this two years Lol)...Personally, I don't real like to shop from Mandarake now. They were good before, but now...From what I see the Nakano Store has been increasing the price for some of their items from 1000-5000 yen now. Also, the other bad thing is that when placing an order with a 5000 yen item, but they think that they can sell more on that item, and they will cancel your order, then send you an email says that the item was sold out or something (usually copy & paste email), then they re-release it again with higher price. It did happened to me couple times. Also, their shipping cost isn't correct sometimes like they over charge you on a package. You need to send them an email to correct them, otherwise, you just paying extra on a small package.
well, now ir's 1000$
