What Sex Are You?

As I come from the Resin ABJDs to Vinyl, I notice there are lot more female RESIN collectors than male, but more male DD collectors than female! Where do you stand on this, and what are you? *Horrible pictue
Oh btw, Anzu says:
Heya cousins! Anyone going to a Anime Con in Maryland?

      If you don't mind just getting a head, I'm looking for a split partner! :D

          If I'm pretty sure of the correct definition, it's someone who helps you buy something and then they get a cut of it For example:
          If you and I buy nomy's doll, you would get either the head or body and I would get either the head or body, depending on what you picked.
          BTW, you should buy from Nomy! Totally radical dude that person is!

      Heh, I'm the opposite--I have a DD, but no Nendos. Though it's not that Nendos truly creep me out, but they do weird me out a little; I just never quite got the "chibi" appeal myself. But hey, everyone's tastes are different--or, to be obnoxiously highbrow: de gustibus non est disputandum

        To be honest I love chibis, but Not so much the MDDs!
        I see wonderful people pull off MDD wonderfully! But I always feels like if I got one, I would love everyone else's more than my own! ; 3;

          Yeah, a lot of MDDs kind of feel like they're stuck in limbo between normal and chibi, so they feel a little weird. Some of the more recent limiteds are better, Maria and Illya spring particularly to mind, but when it comes to customs the four standard heads generally still feel a little funky.

          But even with the limited MDDs that DO look good, there's one thing that would keep me from adopting one (beyond budget): the number of complaints I've seen about the MDD body. (Ms. Geek/Dollcumentary has certainly been the most vocal, but I've encountered others.) Until they update it, or until Obitsu gets their 43cm body widely available, I'd hang back from an MDD no matter HOW cute she was. ^^;

            Was it the knee joints? I can't remember.
            I do have a MSD, however I would get a limited MDD and as much as I would LOVE to have a character DD, I prefer to make one up! Not saying people don't do this already, but I guess for me it takes the fun out of getting a back story out of a doll!

              Knee joints are apparently the worst part, but it sounds like they're more fragile overall--apparently they don't have a real skeleton like the bigger DDs do, and are built more like the smaller Dollfie EBs. (I have one of the latter, and I'll tell you, they're annoying as hell because of how easily their joints pop apart. I have no desire to repeat that if I can possibly avoid it.)

              See, while my girl's a custom, she's a custom of a webcomic character, as you may have caught on DoA from some of my comments. XD I would have some fun making up a new character for a limited DD, I think, but part of why I went with what is essentially a character doll rather than making her a character of my own is that for my OCs I've found I'm VERY picky about finding the right mold for them. I think I might maybe have found a candidate for one of dozens of characters I have, but I'm still not certain, and this after close to two years worth of doll research. ^^;

    I'm female and I have five vinyl dolls. Three are Volks Dollfie Dreams, representing DD version 1 (strung), DD version 2 (the modern version) and Mini DD. Two are Obitsu: a female "ball joint" 60cm and a "regular soft body" 60cm modded male. I actually explained the process of how to mod a two-piece Obitsu into a 60cm boy here:
    http://www.figure.fm/post/en/24973/Come+walk+with+me.html

    The difference between the "ball joint" and "regular soft body" 60cm girls are primarily in the elbow and knee joints. The "ball joint" version was designed under influence of Volks DD2 and has ball shaped elbow joints and a more sleek knee joint. However, the "regular soft body" elbows can bend enough to facepalm, and the knees can sit "seiza" in a kneeling way. The "ball joint" knees are prettier but they have worse mobility either than the DD2 or the Obitsu "regular soft body." They must sit in a chair or hanging over something. They can't kneel. Then again, it's just in Mitzi's character not to bend the knee to anyone. ^^

    I am converting ABJD people to vinyl fans left and right. Biff's significant other Ryan has a DD v.1 girl under my influence, and I think there are more people who just get wowed by the fact that such a substantial-looking doll weighs so little and can take the occasional bump without breaking.

    Current family portrait:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/msgeek/5503180696/
    The white-haired ABJD next to them is not mine. However, I do have plans for a custom WS DD2 who is going to be the girl in the wheelchair's (Sarge) in-game alter ego.

    Just got the body (DD-Dy) for my Musume and put her together last night.. (see my post, here http://www.figure.fm/post/en/24946/A+new+Musume+is+born.html )

    I found the price-tag in one go a little much, but breaking down the purchase over several months, it was more manageable. Maiya still needs some work, but she's presentable....
    Was rather surprised at just how big these girls are... I knew, but until you hold one in your hands, it's hard to get a sense of scale...

    I noticed as well that DD owners are often male unlike resin BJD owners. I think the tie ins with anime series and the anime look has brought a lot of people in to Dollfie ownership (myself included.) It also helps that spending too much time on Figure.fm makes you want to buy one regardless of gender LOL
    I'm female and only have one DD, but maybe more in the future~

        I don't know about shojo characters. There probably are some I'm not thinking of, but most of the DDs I've seen have been from Seinen or Moe shows or even some stuff related to VNs. Fate/Stay Night, White Album, Umineko, etc for example are appealing to male buyers. Even the Aoi and Yukino base characters sort of fit the tsun and dere looks which would lead me to believe they really wish to tap in to the male market with DDs.

      LOL This so true.. I find the faces on the SD's, Obitsu's, Azone, etc are not very appealing.. Just seem to have no... Expression.. I guess..
      Also, the idea of having to "re-string" the dolls doesn't work with me...

      The ones I saw here, particularly Chibichibiusa, and Wolfienrich's mobs.. (still can't get over how many they have) were a big part of getting one...

            LOL! Okay, I've now got this hilarious mental image of Saber running around Monty-Python-with-coconuts style, finally getting past the rude Frenchmen (because she's totally badass and no-nonsense enough to do it), only to pick up the grail and see it's a doll version of herself. XD

      G.I Joe back in the 60's were still "Dolls" no matter what Gender.... *And, yes, my cousin (6 months younger than me) had Barbies* So, even at almost 50, and male, I've been seriously looking at getting a Dollfie, bit by bit....

    I am also in that male demographic. ^_^ Been collecting just under a year now and I currently have five daughters. I am the only guy locally that shows up to doll meets that owns dolls. All the others are just BF's along for the ride. And I am also the only DD collector in the area. It's always loads of resins and then my happy crew of vinyls!

      Dude, I went to my first doll show this weekend, I was the only person there with a Dollfie. It wasn't awkward though, there were a number of guys there and many were interested in learning more about Dollfies. I was able to find some furniture that was Dollfie size as well, which was totally cool. I've heard from a local doll shop owner that there was a group of girls who had dolls similar to mine... but so far we haven't crossed paths.

      I think it is funny though, on this website Dollfie posts get many hits, and there appears to be a thriving Dollfie community... yet actually meeting one in real life seems to be far and few between. Whats the deal?

        I don't have any issues with being the only DD owner out there. It's actually quite cool because noone has ever seen one in person before. They all remark on how light they are compared to resins, how posable they are and also how cute they can be. Manami and Yoko have been great ambassadors for the Dollfie Dream cause! XD

        I can't say I know why there seem to be plenty of people in the US that have DD's and yet none are anywhere near me. ^_^ NC is the closest to me at a 3 hour drive. Then theres Florida but that is quite a far piece for me. In NC there is one guy who has 4 of them ( 5 including Lily when she arrives ) and one girl who just got a custom one put together. That's it in a 2 state area. Kind of sad really as I love seeing others daughters in person.

        YOU need to get on another road trip and come see me! XD And bring your girls!

            Anytime we have meets up in NC you are more than welcome to come! We talk about meets over on the Den of Angels forums. You have to be invited in to join but you should still be able to read posts in the meetup threads section. Just check for the Raleigh and Charlotte meets, they even do them in Greensboro too. I don't know how far those are for you but it's worth a look if you are interested. I live in SC so any of these meets are from 3 hours at the shortest to almost 5 hours. And thats one way. So I am used to driving to meet other DD owners. :)

        Yeah, but the race is damn close. A lot closer than I recall gender polls in GD on DoA being, certainly, so I think it's safe to say at least that DDs have a stronger male customer base than resin dolls, for the moment anyway.

            Yeah, it may be that women are a little more wary of posting photos of themselves online, since we're constantly told these horror stories of real stalkers. It's also sometimes hard to tell from the content of the photoshoot what gender the "parent" is, too, especially on here, since even females like me have caved in to a wee bit of fanservice now and again. (Hence why I sure hope Agatha doesn't get on here. . . She'd be livid if she saw some of the shots I took of her in her pajamas last shoot! XD)

    What brought me here to begin with was a twitter discussion from @fredrin from Megatokyo about a Dollfie Tohya Miho, in which I was too ignorant about what a Dollfie was, at the time.. Now that I've been here two years, (and still fairly ignorant about Dollfies!) I believe the adoption of Tohya-san is a bit out of my reach, both monetary and maintenance-wise....... But, I do enjoy the pics that are posted throughout the community, both here and on twitter, living vicariously from others with their "families" .. I thank you all, resin and vinyl Parents....

      Oooh, DD Tohya. . . The 02 head could do quite nicely for her with the right faceup, few to no actual mods required. Finding the right wig could get annoying, since she's got that particular shade of purple, but it's totally doable. And her flair for lolita clothes would make shopping for her relatively easy too, actually. I totally want to see it done now! *bricked*

      The truth is, I actually thought a Dollfie Agatha would be out of MY reach, and planned to bring home what I thought would be a lower-maintenence girl instead; however, between my research into various costuming and sewing things, and constantly checking here, Den of Angels, Mandarake, AND Yahoo Japan, I chanced on a lucky opportunity that had the right body and wig for Agatha, and brought her home even though it wasn't the head I originally intended. (Worked out great though, I think better than my first concept.) Really, the biggest trick is patience, I think; it took a little over a year between my deciding to adopt and it actually happening. But it's totally possible! If you think you might be interested at least in more reading, I could invite you to DoA, as I got not only tons of info but Agatha herself there. :) *steeples fingers*

        Yeah, I thought the 02 head would go best for her look, very few mods at all. Agreed, the right color of purple would be a biznatch to find, let alone wrapping her ribbons up just right! Goth-loli clothing wouldn't be all too hard to find... Even just starting out with just the head/eyes/wig combo might be enough, having an accusing look might encourage me more to complete her? I'd gladly accept an invite to DoA, just to read more and look around at Agatha and others....(still need to see pics with her glasses)

          Part of the issue with finding the right color purple is that there'd be a bit of a judgement call, considering that Fred's art of her is often colored underneath the pencil hatching--would you go for the dark hatched purple, or the brighter purple underneath? I know I would at least have an issue deciding which to go with. For the dark purple, some of Volks' wigs in Choco Purple could work, but for the brighter purple FM Anime or Usagihime wigs would probably be a better bet. And goth-loli stuff isn't hard to find at all, especially for S/M bust girls since they can get away with wearing stuff for SD sized resin girls too. (The pitfall there is that price and quality will vary widely; I've seen some stuff in the $20-30 range for outfits that are cute but not impressive, while on the other end you've got Dollheart's gorgeous stuff for $90+.)

          I agree that, unless you get crazy-lucky with a secondhand sale, going in phases is probably the best bet. However, I'd probably arrange my project this way if I were buying parts new: one, research like crazy. Have eyes and wig figured out before moving forward, but don't sweat it on clothes just yet. Either accumulate faceup supplies OR have one or two potential faceup artists lined up. Then, get head, body, and possibly alternate bust piece all at once from Volks, to save on shipping a bit; might toss in a wig if the dark purple route is your preference. Then, assemble your doom! =P Then again, like I said, that'd be my approach; I'm crazy like that.

          Will send you an invite ASAP! :D

            I think a darker purple, as long as any reflective hilights show up "lighter". Sounds a bit difficult? That would be a tough call, I think.... The "Coffin Rose" print has lighter tones while "Polesitter" is a bit darker... (also, PS was inked by Hawk of AppleGeek fame, if that makes a difference) Then again, depending on which mood I'd be going for, more than one wig could be an option.... (Heh, "mood wigs") :P

              Mood wigs, yeah! Especially if you also end up going for one short, one long. I've actually been considering getting Agatha a wig with the hair up, for a more formal look, though I haven't committed to the idea yet.

              Hm, dark, yeah. It'll go with more of her gothy stuff. You're looking at size 8-9 wigs for a DD by the way. Here's some quick suggestions:

              http://www.cancan-jseries.net/product_info.php?cPath=29_92&products_id=1663
              http://www.cancan-jseries.net/product_info.php?cPath=29_173&products_id=2448

              Usagi-hime does carry purple, but it seems her purple 8-9s are all out at the moment. Here's an example of the kind of purples she's got:
              http://www.usagihime.com/goods.php?id=83
              http://www.usagihime.com/goods.php?id=80

              Leekeworld sadly doesn't carry dark purple standard, but it might be a good idea to keep an eye on them, because they do often have limited colors, and there's a chance purple could come up in them: http://www.leekeworld.com/En/default_leeke.asp

              Volks Choco-purple is VERY dark, almost black: http://www.volksusa.com/w103choco.html Their wigs, especially long ones, don't exactly come cheap, but their quality is supposed to be proportionally fantastic.

              I'm sure there's more I missed, but these sites can at least give you a start. As you poke around DoA more, you'll start noticing resin doll companies--these companies often carry wigs of their own, so it's worth checking them once in a while. I know it seems like a LOT of stuff, and I suppose it is, but I personally think it's better to spend a lot of time researching and get the right thing, you know?

                The lighter cancan r59a dkorchid looks real good for a "lighter" color, but I'll say that the volks Choco-purple looks spot-on from my monitor... The usagihime ones looked a tad bit "thin" but, I think I could work with them for a "stressed out" scenario.....Some awesome links there! BTW, DoA has my membership awaiting approval, thanx for the invite!!..

              Yeah, the choco purple (which I suspect is the same as the dollyhair nylon color hematite, or possibly kiss of death) is really pretty--I like that it's a relatively subtle purple tone, so it's more believable on a human than some of the brighter ones. Well, presuming Tohya IS human. =P The Usagi-hime wigs I linked primarily for color; instead of having one listing for each style, she obnoxiously lists each permutation separately. Not the best web design in my open onion, but it's good that she offers the fantasy colors when other companies don't.

              Oh, you're quite welcome! When you get OK'd, we DD people hang out in the Dollfie Dream General discussion thread under the Larger Doll discussion if you'd like to pop on over. :) The Workshop section is going to be a good place for you too, since that's where they talk about faceups and clothes in addition to more intense mods. And once you've been on a while and have made about 40 posts, you'll get access to the Marketplace for secondhand dolls and commission artists--a wonderful, but DANGEROUS section. There's a reason why I haven't been over there since I bought Agatha. ^^;

              Pft. Wimps! Everyone knows that everything's better with some danger and doom! Just look at Invader Zim: singlehandedly almost wiped out his own native civilization. . . though admittedly he's "the only one who is impressed by that." And hey, at least we're choosing our doom! While they get ugly zombies or emotionless robot rebellions, WE get cute figures and dolls. We so win.

              I was gonna say, "04 for Tohya? WHAT!?" XD Well, welcome to the dark side! Yes, there are cookies--in DD size no less.

              Oh, before you go strait for the Volks Animetics, since you're a DIY-er like me, you might want to consider Pupapa Paradise's D.eye.Y eye bases. The plastic bases are great in that the lens part is crystal clear, which gives you a really nice bit of tracking and life to the eyes. And then you can design the eyes however you want, even in colors that Volks won't do--for Tohya I can imagine having the "shadow" portion of the iris being a dark, red-brown, fading into a lighter gold, for instance. The standard Volks ones are pretty much only black shadows with color highlights, which is okay but gets limiting pretty quick. And the D.eye.Ys are generally less expensive if you already have paints/good printer paper/sparkly stuff-- only about $3 versus $11. :) Just another option to consider!

                true! chibinezumi has some really good DIY eyes... I think that'd be the best way, I'd make sure they are "true" to Miz. Miho for certain... Good Call!
                Ah, btw, I've thought that, pending a view of Miz. Agatha's newest set of glasses, I was wondering if Pancake had a "sibling" that would be willing to "visit" out here?

              Agatha's eyes are D.eye.Y's too, as a matter of fact. You can get REALLY creative with them! I like the results from using pearl-ex powders myself, since I like the extra reflectivity much like the effect of Volks' metallic animetics, but I've seen people use sparkly nailpolish, metallic papers, outright glitter, prints, and paint all to fantastic effect. Oh, I know a few people on DoA have used them to make glow-in-the-dark eyes; I think a few custom WoW dolls like blood elves and draenei have glow-in-the-dark D.eye.Ys. With so many options, I ended up getting about six pairs of blanks to do in different colors, to experiment a little. Still need to sell off the spares, but I keep procrastinating. ^^; I'd offer them to you, but they're all blue and green, and my only Volks eyes are a very un-Miho-ish greyish pink color.

              Heh! He doesn't currently, but I *do* have a bunch of material left over. I was thinking of trying to tweak the pattern to make a more mature looking night fury, but haven't gotten around to it. Is this your request for completing the art trade? :D

              Heh! You're lucky that I like sewing night furies. =P And this time Agatha will actually be with me; she was a bit miffed I made a "construct" without her when she saw Pancake, so I think this will be a good way to make it up to her. XD And my spring break is soon, too, so I have at least half a chance of getting it done in a timely manner. The only big delay I can figure on is the eyes; I'm pretty sure my mom's already packed the glow-in-the-dark sculpy and the green pearl-ex, and the latter at least is pricey enough for its volume that I'd rather wait for it to be extracted than to go out and buy new.

              Question: For Pancake I didn't do this because I like to cuddle him, but would you like your fury's wings to have wire run through them? It would be to make the wings poseable for photos--presumably with Miho once she comes together. :)

                Wires would be a good thing, but not entirely necessary. (in other words, only if you have them) Poseability would be cool, especially when (not if) I start assembling Miho-san.. The eyes are the same, but if you insist on it, I'll happily wait for them, you've done as much for me, which I'm grateful! So, all in all, I've no worries, "what you can, When you can"

              Gotcha. Well, wire I've got PLENTY of thanks to the amount of polymer clay sculpting my mom and I do; I'll probably take the 20-some gauge stuff I've got and fold it over, so there's no sharp tips in the ends of the wings. Oh, and my mom said that she hasn't packed the pearl-ex, so the eyes are probably actually a go! It's probably good that you gave me this project, actually; with the epoxy putty all packed, I won't be able to work on It's Not a Lamp and the lightning swords like I'd originally planned.

              By the way, JUST now finally took pics of Agatha in her glasses, will send soon. :)

      Oh goddess that would be awesome...Dollfie Miho-chan. Then again I think maybe my Mitzi (Obitsu girl) could cosplay her effectively. The first cosplay I really want for her is Quorra from Tron: Legacy, because even in her usual "leathers" she looks a lot like her...so much she went with me to the second time I saw the movie. I was with a couple of other dollieh fanciers for that showing, and they agreed.

      However: Miho would NOT look right as a DDDy. She would be an M-bust DD, maybe even a S-bust DD. This may be a reason we haven't seen her yet.

      However, a DDDy Ping-chan, complete with super cute earblades...that might be one to match Yoko for Ota appeal.

        Agreed, Mitzi has the look for a perfect cosplay.. (haven't seen Tron yet...) Miho would definitely be an S-bust, looking at Fredrins "Polesitting Miho" poster. It looks like her bustier is holding them in pretty tight. Ping-chan, on the other hand could easily be an L-bust DD, (Grey haired Pre-update ver.) or a DDDy with pink hair, post-update Ver. Either way, she'd have some cute outfits. Like I posted to Poofiemus, I think just getting her together, bit-by-bit might be the way to go.....

    I'm male and proud parent of 13 wonderful girls! It's been almost two years since I got into Dollfies and my wallet has never been full since. I think it's pretty awesome that the demographic for DDs is balanced. So far there are a few DDs owners in my area, though the only time I really have to take my girls out are during anime conventions which are many over here.

      I've been in since Sept of last year, I gots Anzu's head as a early B-day presnt for myself. even thought my B-day was in sept! xD

      I could never take my doll to a con, well at lest not Anzu, too big she is! Maybe a tiny or a MDD!
      Come to Otakon/katsucon here in the DMV!

        I can hardly believe that I have that many as well. Hard to give them all my undivided attention but I do the best I can. ^^;

        Getting yourself a DD for a Bday present is the best Bday present, IMO!

        I've been taking my girls to cons for a while now. I think it's mostly due to me staying away from areas that are crowded and also having friends/roommates that know about BJDs and how to take care of them that helps me to be able to enjoy cons with my girls.

            The most I've taken to a con is two. I would never take more than that as I would probably never take them out or do any shoots. One to two is perfect as you are able to carry them but not be overwhelmed in terms of taking care of them. I would say try taking Anzu to a con and see how it feels having her with you, if you feel like you have time to do shoots with her and are comfortable with her being out and such. If you have some small local cons, those would be great to gauge your experience. That's just my two cents.

    In a related but not sort of way I'd like to pose another question... What do girls think of guys who have dolls? A few weeks ago I was with some friends of the other gender who questioned if any guy that has dolls could be in a relationship. I myself am currently single, and the last time I was in a relationship was before I got into Dollfies... I'd like to think my single status is of my own chosing. But what do you girls think? Is a guy that collects dolls, good for a friend, but not a boyfriend?

    Well I'm man and I have both. My first BJD was a resin girl and then a month later I bought my first DDdy. She is only a week old so I still need to get her some cool stuff to wear :p

    The reason I bought a DD is because I love how they look like an anime character but now that I have one I found DD more easy to handle that my resin BJD. They are way lighter, more soft and definitely more easy to pose. So in my own personal opinion I think more men collect DD because we don't like complicated things. But that just speaking on my case LOL

    I'm an African-American girl, but unfortunately for me i don't have a dollfie. That sucks. You and your dollfie look so pretty. I want a dollfie too. I never had one before. I really wish i did. I want to get one, but they're so freaking expensive.

    I'm a guy, and i have one DD my beloved Rise, i prefer the Volks DD look as it is Anime Style, i took me ages to decide to get one as it is quite expensive. But in the end i ended up shelling out $1300 for my first daughter LOL, and thats not including accessories.
