Don't need a DSLR for great photography 2
About 8 - 9 months ago, I made a post on Figure.fm titled "Don't need a DSLR for great figure photography", to sum up what I wrote about, is that people should not go out and buy a DSLR with the idea that it will improve their photography. They should learn how to use what they have and over time, their skills with vastly improve. The 2 pictures that you see in this post, I used a Canon PowerShot SX100IS.
also in this post, here are 2 videos on the pro photographer, cheap camera challenge

I agree you don't need a great camera for good pictures
I see your also a fan of Digital Rev! I love their YouTube channel.
You are very correct, it's not the camera that makes a photographer good. If it were than nobody would care about Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or William Klein. They are/were just fantastic artists and don't just predate digital but almost completely predate color.
A good DSLR greatly increases the ability to get a good photo - quicker focusing, more accurate focusing, lower light ability, better noise reduction.... but these just help the photographer - they don't make a good picture. The most important thing is the artist as made clear by the Digital Rev videos. :)
By the way - you got some really great looking shots there!
totally agree, I used an iPhone for most of the time!
This is very true. The best photo I've ever taken was with a 4MP compact. It was mostly a "right place -right time" picture. Subsequentaly all my equipment upgrades and skill practicing is so I can MAKE that kind of picture intentionally.
i want that pentax 50mm =O
yeh its true you dont need to have a great camera to get good photos but you do need a good eye for it.
There was a famous photographer that won an award using a dispobale camera
Agreed, a lot of it is knowing what that lil point-n-shoot can do, and making the most of it. (you've tempted me to break out my old Z740 EasyShare, just to see what I can still do with it)
Agreed on most points. Though, theres some things that I can do better on a GF1 than a Sony W170 though :P. But I do agree that it takes time to get used to the camera as I've noticed my skills increase and decrease with the w170. Plus, I can take the W170 to more places due to it's smaller size.
I would agree that you DO NOT need a DSLR for photography, and you can produce stunning pictures with it, but I must say that this is well bound to Subject Photography. For everything else, I bet everyone agrees that a DSLR would always be more versatile.
I have used a Canon IXUS 6.0 (almost ancient), an iPhone 3GS, and my Canon 40D respectively throughout the past few years, and I must say that though the IXUS can produce amazing shots, the flexibility and versatility of the DSLR cannot be matched by a mere point and shoot.
Photography skills include the photographer's composition (and thus, a DSLR doesn't necessarily make the photographer a good one), but aside from the physique and composition of the DSLR, it's also his knowledge regarding the machine's set-up such as the aperture, ISO, shutter-speed, and more (which would define the camera's versatility). This is what differentiates a DSLR from a point and shoot.
I use a 2mp camera phone and my friends sometimes thought that my pictures are taken with a slr camera LOL...
Someone once said, A photographer is an artist who draws with light. The keywords here being "draw" and "light", which translate into framing and lighting condition. A DSLR will not turn a badly taken photo with poor framing and lighting into a good one; but it can turn a properly taken photo into a great one.
I've sharpen my skill a lot after reading the fist post, this is more usefull too! thakns for sharing
i agree i use a powershot for my figma pictures as well. However, if you want things like f stops and other things you need pro cameras. Im excited cause im getting a rebel XS for my birthday!
If you want to see some of my shots go to my devient: mikeg1996
My phone's camera, 12MP, xenon flash, the CMOS sensor is 1/1.83 - with the right settings, can outmatch many Standalone digital cams.
