Earphones Recommendation

Posted by raptor_cZn [www]

My earphones which came supplied with my iPod Touch is now dead after 7 months of use. Well, it still works but I can't fit it in my ear anymore ^^;. The picture speaks for itself.

So I have decided to get a new pair of earphones. Note: The one I intend to get are not those in-ear earphones because I don't need the complete noise isolation. According to some too, you need to spend a lot if you really want to get high quality in-ear earphones.

I'm not really of an audiophile but what I do know is that brands such as Audio Technica and Sennheiser are pretty reliable so my current target is the Senheiser MX 760 which I managed to find a shop selling at RM 185 (approx USD 54).

Still need to know if there are any good alternatives. The earphones should be really durable so that it doesn't break like the iPod ones and the sound quality should be as good as the iPod ones if not better. My budget for a new pair of headphones is around the MYR 200 (USD 58) mark.

It would be great if there are MX760 users which can share their experience with their earphones too.

I would appreciate any suggestions or help on this =)

I know Low Yat has a lot of earphones but the thing that I'm afraid with cheap earphones is the durability.
Don't want to get one that breaks and have to get another one in the future.

Personally I don't think there's much point in dropping a lot of cash on ear-buds. Canal-phones yeah and full headphones.

Sennheiser are generally pretty good. I can't speak for their earphones, but I've had three sets of headphones from them. Only issue I had was that the cable on one set (HD415s I think) dropped the left channel after about 9 months. Also had a set of PXC300s that the cable parted company with... but that was because I caught my knee in the "Y" and tore it out. That said, I've had my HD595s coming up 5 years now and they've been faultless.

Not too sure about canal-phones but I do have one which is the Razer Pro Tone m100. The thing with it is that, when I touch the cable of the earphone, I can actually hear those sounds (something like a stethoscope when you touch the round thing). So its actually quite annoying when you move it around a bit.

Personally I dodge canal-phones as they give me chronic ear-ache... though apparently the really high end ones have the best sound out there.

Yeah, that cable microphoning effect is a pain. Different sets of cans seem to get it to a different degree, but I've yet to own a pair that didn't suffer from it to one degree or another. The worst I had for it were probably the Equation Audio RP-21s (sad, because they were anotherwise pretty awesome set of cans). Even my little portable buds (gave up on portable sound quality after the 21's) get it to a degree when they knock against the buckle of my satchel. If it's a particular pain for you, try asking around on Headfi.org or similar, they might be able to suggest something that doesn't suffer quite so badly.

I'm not that big of an audiophile, but my friends are. For me, sound quality doesn't matter too much as long as there isn't any static in the noise. I care more about video qualities though..
Just get a set of cheap headphones. As long as they can play the music, I don't think it matters much.

    hmmmm!! Looking for In Ears?

Audio technica ATH-CKS70 for solid hard hitting bass.
Shure SE110 for Balanced Sound with alittle more bass.
Sennie's CX300 with Complys are also recommended.

I bought the Audio-technica ATH-CKM50 at Yodobashi Camera on my last trip and love them. They block out noise and have excellent audio quality for just 4980 yen.

I think you can buy parts to replace the part of the earphone that is broken...

For me tho.. I prefer in-earphones than these types since it doesnt hurt my ear if i use it for more than 2 hrs straight...

    I have the Sony MDRNC7 noise canceling headphones. They work pretty well and aren't very expensive. My only complaint is the strap-part (what is that called?) at the top of the head has hinges for the headphones to fold up and it really annoys me. ^^;

LOL. My ear buds with from my 3rd Generation 16GB Ipod Nano are doing the same thing. Still playing music but the rubber is starting to flake off like your buds ^_^ That is after a good 10 months of use ^^ I think your best bet is just to go with somthing around the $15-20 mark for ear buds.

The same thing happened to my iPod earphones, I bought these http://www.amazon.com/JBuds-Hi-Fi-Noise-Reducing-Buds-Black/dp/B000IG66VS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253802572&sr=8-1 they're pretty good, just have to get used to the whole in ear thing. It comes with small, medium and large silicone pieces, I find that the small works well for me and it's only $10 =P

You know if your Ipod is still under the 1 year warranty of purchase. They will replace the headphone for you for free if I remember correctly.

You should try searching for a review of the MX760 on head-fi using the search bar there. But I would absolutely consider the Sennheisers over cheap $15-20 earbuds and skull candy. Some of my friends and my sister run through those cheap earphones like 2-5 a year, which is enough to buy a more decent and durable pair of earphones. You can maybe check out some of the earbuds by AKG, like the AKG K315. I can't say much on how they sound but AKG does make nice full sized headphones. But if you ever consider a pair of in-ears I recommend a pair by Shure. Love my SE530. :D

I can't believe that you used the standard ipod earphones for so long!!! Almost anything gives out better sound quality than those piles of crap!!

Yeah, Sennheisers are pretty good. Used to have a pair, One of the older CX series, CX500 I think. it lasted a good few years before dying (why is it always the left ear?)

At the moment, I'm using Shure SE102 earphones. Brilliant sound quality but a bit on the pricey side. Definitely not in the pricerange you've set up...

Haha. They are quite decent at least to me... Was stripped for cash after getting my iTouch and collecting figures as hobby has also done a lot of damage to my wallet lol >.<

Well if the Sennheisers are more durable in addition to the good sound quality, all the better.

well, all I can say is If you think that Ipod headphones were decent, be prepared to be blown away by your new ones...

But if you want properly decent sound quality (and if your ears can handle them) I would advise getting canalphones (the ones with rubber buds which go into your ears). It may just be me but one of the reasons why I hate the ipod earphone design (and the flat ones in general) is because, when I use them, alot of sound doesn't go into my ear and spreads out so I need to put the volume on higher to listen to my music.

This has a double effect of running more battery power cos you need more power to pump the music and also annoying everyone around you cos they can hear your music, whether they want to or not!!

Yup exactly! I find that earbuds fall off too easily, at least opposed to canalphones. Plus sound isolation isn't just for tuning out from all the outside noises, but helps you hear more of the details from your music rather than having it washed out.

This might help a bit (It's all earbuds :D): http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/earbuds-round-up-441400/

All of those earbuds would be significantly better than a cheap pair, and those in the higher category will be much better than Skull Candy. Heh not a big fan of Skull Candy (they're all about looks more than quality) and Bose (overpriced though comfy). :x

Well, I've had my Gummy ear buds ($19 US when I got them, now around $12) and they lasted from 2006 to now, still work, and are just fine. Over-ear headphones, I would suggest any of the mid-range Sony models (Around $20-30 USD) A pair of nice ones (Can't remember the name) came with my Discman back in the late 90's, and I still have them. They're comfy.

Wow that's the same thing that's happen to the ipod headphones I have right now. The rubber around the side started to rip off. Very flimsy. Thought it was cause I tugged them out of my ears from leaving the ipod on the table while getting up, dropping it from my lap as I got up, etc.
