My New Room

Posted by Meimi132 [www]

Last week, on the 20th, I moved into my new uni home. I'm living with my friends this year. 3 bedroom flat, shared bathroom, kitchen etc. We're on the top floor. And none of us have rooms with walls facing any strangers rooms. Which is GREAT. Means no unwanted noise. All they gonna put up with is us playing Beetles Rock Band at night hehe, me thumping away at the drums. (Can only do easy atm.... but am always getting 80+%.
Anyways... nuff of that.... my room. The biggest of the three since I applied first. Since we're top floor, we get slopey ceilings, which I love. Rooms with any kind of oddity or slope or something I love. More fun that boring box rooms. And roof windows. Sooooooooo much fun. We get to look down and spy on folks and they can't see us one bit hehehe.

If you wanna see the rest of the pics, cos there are more lol, alot more, just go to my blog, here, to see the final room, posters n all, and the pros n cons list I made lol.

Edit: I added the 'after' pic too, felt mean not including it for some reason.....

My New Room

Who wants a magical mystery tour????

(That is one BIGASS wallscroll btw. Seriously long. Wouldn't fit anywhere but the door really. One of the cons of the room.)

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

Drossel's quite happy with her new home. She finally has a really place now, instead of crammed into my far to crowded room back home lol.

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

A before shot. Sad, empty, just moved in.

My New Room

And after, I couldn't be mean and make you all trek to my blog lol. Felt mean....But you could go anyways? lol. There are more pics there.

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

The ladies and gentlemen I brought with me. Big box, all bubble-wrapped nicely. They all survived without a scratch thank god. Fumie I had to leave cos there wasn't enough room in the car, as she was in her box unlike the rest, she's joining them this sunday.
Books can go elsewhere. Shelves are for figures.

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

The view from my velux roof window to my desk lol. Very clean reflections you get at night.

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

Much nicer view out the window too. Seriously though, I mean it, last year I had a sad old building being demolished and some other stuff, this is nicer by far, more distance to it, and you can see into the courtyard and they can't see you. Tis lovely and quiet too.

Mouseover = load notes.
My New Room

Love my colour changing block. Doesn't get warm either, so no risk of melty Drossel-oshiri.

    Looks like it will be awesome when you get it all completely setup. (^_^) Since I'm sadly lacking figures I can't back you on that statement, but I'm sure I'll adopt that mentality when I buy a couple.

      The mecha girls? Busou Shinki's I think you're talking about. They're very cool. Better leg movement than figma, but the joints arn't as good, but they dont have to be on Busou Shinki's, as in the game, they are dolls, fighting dolls. Like Angels in Angelic Layer...

        That's a flaw in the placement of TV and bed, not a flaw in the room on it's own ^^

        I had a plan with wheels and stuff, which could make me watch TV from bed or anywhere else in the room. I have the hardware to do so as well, but the plan was flawed. It needed too much free space on the floor. Sure it's still possible, but I have to move the table a bit and such and then it's too much of a hassle just to be lazy enough not to get out of bed ^^;

          Bed placement yes, but its not the TV's fault. Its where the aerial socket is, the far corner of the desk. Sucks. I'd have to have a super long cable to place it neared my bed or at the other end of the desk, which would deteriate the signal, which isnt great as it is, can't pick up any digital channels, need a signal booster :sob:....

            When I got my antenna fixed I was told that I could go to the shop and order whatever cable length I would like. He would then make it when he passed the shop anyway (at least once a day) and he has tools to make cables of a quality we can't. It's double shielded and waterproof (if you want it outside for whatever reason). If you need a cable and worry about the signal quality, then try to see if you can get something like that done.

            can't pick up any digital channels, need a signal booster

            You still have analogue TV channels?
            As for boosting the signal... Signal boosters are poorly named. In fact they boost everything, including noise. If the signal/noise level is already bad once it reaches your room, then it will not really help. It should be placed on the cable far away to make stronger signal before the noise appears.

            I once installed a signal booster. The digital TV gained a higher quality signal (reduced the lost package issue to a minimum) while it boosted the noise to a level where the analogue TV became almost unwatchable. It went from having static on the picture and good sound to have less static, but horizontal lines, which moved up and down and when they were in a certain position the TV failed to tell the start of the image, which means it killed both picture and sound when it happened. It's no fun to watch when the sound drops for like a second every 20 to 30 seconds.

            I would recommend complaining about poor signal strength rather than buying a signal booster, realise that it makes the problem worse and then complain. A Quality signal booster cost around £60.

              Complained, or rather enquired as to why there was no digital, even with a signal booster(my dad brought one to see if it worked with it.) and it didnt, and we asked at the office, and apparantly its a problem with the aerials on the roof, which they are looking into. They better do... dont know how long i can live without meaningless repeats of Friends, Scrubs and HIMYM....

                its a problem with the aerials on the roof, which they are looking into

                How long can it take to "look into". Basically they get a guy on the roof. Here is what he should do
                -Check the antenna (measures signal in cable without amplifier). If it fails -> replace antenna
                -Check amplifier (placed next to antenna). If it fails->replace
                -Check signal strength at input to the signal splitter. If it fails-> replace cable (this could be an issue depending on where the cable is located)
                -Check signal splitter (usually indoor). If it fails->replace

                The only thing that's not checked here would be the cables from the signal splitter to the rooms. Hopefully those cables work as they are tricky to replace.

                I would estimate that if there is reasonable access from the top floor to the antenna, then this task could be done in half a day, maybe less than that. The whole issue of looking into is to order a technician to show up when he has time. I managed to get one at a weeks notice. It's not like this is a tricky task. It's just a matter of getting it done and pay for it ^^

                If you just want to use your antenna signal to watch stuff like reruns of Friends, then maybe it's for the better that it's not working :P

    And none of us have rooms with walls facing any strangers rooms. Which is GREAT. Means no unwanted noise

    You mean you live in a tower or ?
    As for the noises... well put young people away from their parents and they get noisy. I once visited a guy in a dorm and at some point the guy from the next room popped in and asked if it were ok if he played loud music, which it were. He then disappeared into his room and a girl whom none of us had seen before went into him and closed the door. A moment later the music became really loud... it goes without saying that none of us wouldn't dream of what went on in there :P

    Books can go elsewhere. Shelves are for figures.

    The amount of books I have for uni wouldn't fit there anyway ^^
    You should consider how to place books in an easy to get way. Maybe they aren't on display, but it shouldn't take ages to get the right one and you should have ONE place to put them or you will wonder where you book went when you are supposed to leave for a lecture. You might as well introduce such a system right away rather than learning the hard way how bad it is without a system ^^;

    The view from the window is a good one (for a city view, that is). It kind of looks like workers housing from when the industrial revolution gained speed. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a steam engine there as it would just somehow fit in, LOL

      I live in the room on the end of our flat, with nothing on the left or front or back side of the walls, behind the right hand wall is the bathroom, then one of my friends rooms, then another friends room, then kitchen, so none of us has to put up with anyone we don't know playing loud music. Which is a BIG improvement on last year, trust me. We each had a evil tosser next to us(different flats completely, just equally unlucky) who played music full volume with no regard for anyone else... And we can't here anything in the floors below us, and we're top floor, so no one above.

        So you are in the end of the house on the top floor.... will be interesting when the winterstorms kicks in :P

        We each had a evil tosser next to us(different flats completely, just equally unlucky)

        My dad ended up living with a gay student on each side in a dorm once. This should have been quite unpleasant due to how they acted and looked at all the guys >_<

        As for loud music/noise... this is the main reason why I decided that I will never live in a flat. Even with non-loud neighbours you will still hear stuff and you will have to take care yourself not to be too loud. Another reason would be once you go outside you would be in the city... totally not a place for me ^^

        I heard a funny story about flats and noise. A couple got kicked out of their flat because they were procreating loudly quite often. Each act took a whole lot of time and the neighbours ended up leaving in order not to listen to all that. They were warned before being kicked out but they seemed to have ignored the warning.

        Hmmm... my brother once lived in a flat where sounds were an issue. He once invited one member of the family on top of him to listen to how well noise travelled into his apartment. They were talking normally upstairs and you could tell which member of the family were talking. Sometimes you could even make out a single word or two. I just realised.... how did the people upstairs end up with two kids when everybody could hear the act? I bet it's no fun to listen to something like that :/

          My brothers girlfriend is the loudest I've ever heard. Seriously.... or she just doesn't know how thin the walls in my brothers room are hahahaah.

          As for winter storms, that won't be a problem, I'm not literally on the end of the building, Its a weird shaped building(kind of in a horseshoe shape....), if I stick my head out my window to the left, I can see where my roof(ceiling) ends, and where the next part of the building begins, I can see the windows of the corridor n stuff, tis a taller part of the building, which isn't connected to my roof but still part of the same building, but will shield me from any strong weather, be it wet, cold, etc etc. Thick insulation helps too. And what uni flats never do is get cold. Mine last year was too bloody warm lol.

            Listening to siblings doing it.... no thanks :P

            It would be just like catching your parents in making yet another sibling. Siblings are ok but you shouldn't encounter when they are made >_<

            And what uni flats never do is get cold. Mine last year was too bloody warm lol.

            Actually some flats can't be heated to comfort. It sounds like they refitted yours with insulation and stuff, which is quite good. It also keeps the heat out during the summer.

            As for warm... I tried being on the floor on top of a boiler in a 800 MW power plant. Talk about a place being too warm for comfort. Nobody lived there though ^^

              Can't help it... wouldn't listen if it we didnt have to... they do it all times of day... and she is really noisy, you can hear it from in my room with music up loud. And in the kitchen downstairs. Its like a porno lol. I walked past one night and thought it was a porno hahaha, never thought someone would actually make noises that loud for real hahah.

    Sorry if this a little off-topic (but nice room by the way ^^)

    I notice that you're from Norfolk, but go to Uni @ Leicester. I was just curious cause I live in Gorleston, Norfolk myself (town next to Great Yarmouth on the coast) and was actually born in Leicester lol. I go back there semi-frequently for family visits and stuff. I was just wondering what part of Norfolk are you from?

    Sorry for asking but I think it's cool to find some people with similar intrests from this neck of the woods, as so far I feel like i'm the only anime/figures loving guy in my town XD. I only recently joined this site but I posted my room pics here, to show you how things go down in sunny Gorleston lol http://www.figure.fm/post/en/2412/dazza3949+s+OTACOOL+room.html.

      Ahhh wicked, I'm about 25 miles out from Norwich in an itty-bitty village called Caston. Used to live in Norwich though... I prefer living in cities. More to do.
      And yeah, finding anyone in Norfolk who's not just into Naruto or GITS or more of the common stuff that Neo covers is tricky lol. Norfolk is far too closed off... it sucks...
      Very cool room btw. Awesome collection. I need a detolf...but has nowhere to put one lol.

    Ah I know where that is, about similar distance away from Norwich but in the other direction to me lol. I been to the city more times than I can remember but personally I prefer Leicester over Norwich. And i'm way over the shonen phase so never got into Naruto (which might explain the Nanoha, Lucky Star & Haruhi figures lol), but as you say it's closed off here and very few people who share our interests *sad face*.

      Ohhhh Norwich kicks Leicesters ass. But London kicks both their asses... I think... Though I love Norwich to bits lol.

      Ummmm.... well I got the pillow off ebay... the case came with a magazine special I bought from Actar. But you can get cheap(bootleg) ones off ebay too, or if you wanna pay full price of around 10000 yen you can get em off HLJ and Hobbysearch etc. And some on Otacute now I think about it.... The mousepad I have isn't official I'm guessing. Got it for £12 in Tokyotoys in London. But you can buy them very cheap on ebay, the bootleg ones, official ones are waaaaay more costly.
      Manga, anime... I'd say amazon.

      Ofc if you weren't being serious I take it all back......

          I have no idea where HS ship. I should think worldwide, it should say on their site though.

    Cool room!
    Just about to get my own place after having to live with my parent during college. It's going to be an experience. Hopefully I land a nice room like yours.^^
