Shibuya photos from my month in Japan March 2011
こんにちはみなさん!! I've been seeing a few post lately that finally got me to post more pictures of my recent trip to Japan. In this post you'll see almost every pictures I took in Shibuya. Sorry for some are pretty lame and were taking through a dirty Starbucks window so the quality of some are not that good, but they all have a special meaning to me!
I hope you enjoy these! Take care everyone and stay tuned for more post about Japan!

The skyscrapers' show cast on one of the Tokyu buildings in Shibuya.

Hachiko crossing from the Starbucks and Tsutaya building. This was March 13th so 2 days after the Tohoku/Kanto quake. You can see that there's less people than normally, but about 2 days after that, it was back to normal.(except for most of the neon signs and big TV screens were turned off to reduce power consumption.)

I don't know really why, for the last 3 years I use to hate Shibuya and love Shinjuku more, but this year, I was in Shibuya at least 5 out of 7 days a week and I miss this place so much! I loved just to hang out with friends in cheap Karaokes and arcades in Shibuya and enjoyed some very coffee or chai tea latte a lot at Starbucks.

Cute little electric candles were placed on each table. Maybe for couples to feel more romantic?! Very catchy but I loved those! XD

I love this one with the lights in the background. I should have tired to go more macro on manual to get a nice bokeh.

Hidden Xacti to grab a timelapse since they don't really like photographers in Starbucks. They told my friend not to use his mini-tripod. Suggested that he could hide his camera in his Bic Camera bag (how ironic!) and take his footage. James Bond style! orz I never was told not to take pictures though, maybe cause I was dressing like a salaryman! XD Here's the time lapse : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iiw_dAmwLnc&feature=player_embedded

Center gai almost deserted 2 days after the quake. The izakaya hosts were desperate to find customers but they failed every time so they were pretty down.

Hmmm! Asahi beer is my favorite beer brand in Japan. Asahi Super Dry is the one I like most. But the Sapporo Gold star is also very good.

Waiting for the train was never very long in Tokyo, and more precisely on the JR Yamanote line.

Whoops! I had my ND filter on so when using Aperture priority it got took dark. Had to use some manual settings on the shutter to get more lights. (ISO leaves too much noise for my taste...) Didn't want to remove my filter since I didn't have anything to store it with me at that time.

Is that Flash? No, it would leave more red in the light rays. XD I really loved when those advertisement buses passed in front and left those trails on long exposure shots.

An awesome little dodgy place in Shibuya! They made delicious takoyaki and it was only 315yen too! I had an awesome time every time I went there. I'll definitely go back next year!

Some very nice BMW probably owned by Yakuza with those 100% tainted windows with probably curtains behind them! XD Just joking but still...

Friendly Starbucks face. This was the new design cause the day before that it was the brown classic type.

Gorgeous day it was! I think the next day we had some flash freezing rain for 10 minutes. I was exiting the station at that time and me and and some 40 people decided not to wait for it to stop and started running towards a "Kiosk". It was the first time ever I was queue waiting to buy an umbrella!

Waited for my friend in front of Starbucks and decides to grab some pics and a video.

Another try at bokeh-macro-shot-plastic-electric-candle picture taking. Darker but still kinda nice.

The moon was very bright that night!

It was very dark and creepy at times, but I loved hanging out in Shibuya. THe creepy part was that it was very dark, but so crowded at the same time that it felt out of place. Like you're in a field to watch some fireworks, but everybody's moving fast and the fireworks never come...

Full moon over Hachiko crossing. I took this one right before entering the JR Yamanote line station in Shibuya. Sorry for bad pixel picture, since I was using the Lumix LX3's digital zoom.

Shibuya station JR Yamanote line bound for Shinjuku, 1 stop from my Shin-ôkubo station stop.

Notice the secret 鼠 (nezumi) in the picture. He was "washing" himself while literally thousands of people were around. I was sitting right behind the Hachiko dog and waiting for my friend, with everyone waiting for their friends at this spot...

March 31st. Was on one of the last train in the JR Yamanote going back to Shin-ôkubo. Took this one as I entered the train in the Shibuya station. I had an awesome night with my friend Kevin in 3 different bars and went for a last beer at some Family Mart in Center Gai. Was leaving on April 1st so it was a cheerful but sad goodbye night.

Have you found it?
There he is.
Sneaky little bastard! XD
Really cool pictures! I took a few shots and a video from that Starbucks in Shibuya but was told to stop :/
I miss Japan.
Thanks! I think it all depends on how you dress!! XD Just kidding. I took a few videos of flashy bikes and what not but no timelapse, since my camera can't make'em but next time I go back to Japan, armed with a better camera, I'll try to do some, James Bond style! orz :D
I bought a latte so they couldn't bitch at me. LOL
Lovely photos :)
Thanks!
great pics
Thank you! Stay tuned for more! ;)
This seems like so much fun.
It seems like it would be totally overwhelming though :0
The first time it's impressive, but after a while it's just enjoyable and wonderful! XD 日本万歳!!
I'm gonna start saving up.
any tips?
Any tips on saving? Or Japan? Well, in both cases it all depends on what you wanna do. I've been to Japan 4 times , from 6 days to a month and it cost me between 1700$ to 3000$ in personal expenses including meals, between 900$ to 1100$ for accommodation, from hotels to apartments and finally, between 950$ to 1200$ for plane ticket from Montreal to Narita. Overall if you wanna see traditional Japan, then plan at least a few days out of Tokyo, like Osaka or Kyoto. I used Sakura house to find an apartment, but you can rent shared rooms, private rooms and even houses. So, if you have any questions about more in depth details, just ask! :D Take care!
My travel advice is similar. Japan can be expensive but it doesn't have to be to get great quality. My flight was $900 and I know a great hotel for about 3000yen per night. My daily food budget is $50-60 per day and I eat well. Bring a little extra cash for any goodies you really want and your set. I would recommend a minimum of two weeks to really enjoy yourself. Last tip is to get yourself a Suica card at the airport which is a debit card for trains so you don't have to buy tickets every time you need a train. Very handy.
Most of it was in regards to the money, so thank you!
How fluent are you in Japanese?
日本語すこしだけわかります。 (which loosely translate as "I understand a bit of Japanese.") I know how to read hiragana and katakana but I've only started recently (like a few months ago) and I do all my studies alone on the internet. I could do small talk and get by easily, but couldn't converse fluently. Each time I go back though I learn more and more. I'll have to work harder and go to college to learn it official a get a degree, which I would really like to! 気をつけて!それじゃあ!
Awesome, thanks for the tips, mate.
The Suica card tip from LoganRunn is not negligible too. I have mine since the last 4 years now (but got a newer one this time and gave my old card to fellow member Kxela!) and I used it to by breakfast at restaurants in Shizuoka, get groceries and what not at conbinis and buy vending machine stuff with it. Of course all trains and metros were paid with the magic touch of the Suica, only the Shinkansen needed you to buy a ticket. Enjoy your future trip to Japan!
Took a video of Shibuya crossing from the Starbucks myself. So few people in the pic its shocking.
Asahi rules!!
Oh yeah!!
So sad that this is turned off. Really makes Shibuya special.
I know! It was weird too, cause the screens weren't really turned off, as you could see the pixels flashing and get powered, but they seemed to have turned off the DVD players or input signals. hehehe I know it was for the greater cause, but I would have love to get all the signs turned on so I could take better pictures. 日本万歳!万歳!万歳!
Great pics dude. Keep them coming!
Next time will be Shin-ôkubo, which was where I stayed. And overall i liked it, but since it was Korean town, it was very Japanese and as soon as I was at the station entrance, it was filled with Indians and Koreans. I'm not racist or anything, but when I want a real Japanese experience, I try to avoid gaijin places... XD
Same here. I try to avoid anything international when I'm in Japan including food. Can't understand why folks start looking for Denny's or KFC when they made such a long trip. I don't even bother with Starbucks as I'd rather go to the local coffee houses like Doutor.
Well, it's all a matter of taste but my favorite coffee place is probably Segafredo. We don't have Starbucks over here and their chai tea latte and sakura latte are very. But usually, I got to the Shibuya one just to hang out and meet some friends, as I don't really go to Starbucks anywhere else in Japan... XD I had a few Doutor near where I was so I went there quite a lot but only for coffee, as everything tends to smell and taste tobacco! XD
Doutor was my first Japanese coffee chain followed closely by Excelsior, Tully's, Cafe Veloce, Key Coffee and a couple of others. Tully's is my fave as they have bigger cups but also like the bread places that serve coffee also like Vie de France.
