AQ Test

Posted by Meimi132 [www]

Just now, over MSN, my mother made me take this test on Wired.com, cos she got a score of 21 and was a little worried lol. I got 15. God knows how she stumbled upon this, though she is doing a psychology course atm, she's probably trying to analyze all of us lol.(By all of us I mean my family lol)

My full scorey chart thing was as follows;
Agree: 2,4,5,12,13,39,41,42: 1 point
Disagree: 10,15,17,38,44,47,48: 1 point
Score: 15

Its meant to be a measure of autistic traits in adults. The below text is from the site itself.

Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and his colleagues at Cambridge's Autism Research Centre have created the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, or AQ, as a measure of the extent of autistic traits in adults. In the first major trial using the test, the average score in the control group was 16.4. Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives.

The pic is a screen from an ep of Haruhi-chan. My brother and I were in hysterics at this bit lol.

I think 32+ is the optimum number or something like it.

Neh. 32+ is saying you might have Autistic traits, so lower is better.

I think being Autistic is usually generally accepted as a bad thing. xD
But I guess its really a matter of opinion? O_o

High score indicates that the person in question could be autistic. Also a number of people are "half autistic" meaning they have some traits, but not all.

Having an interest in getting a huge figure collection or knowing anime well (possibly a specific one/specific genre) are actually traits, which will increase your AQ score. The same goes for being able to remember phonenumbers. If people get a high score based on stuff like that without getting stuff like "no friends" and that stuff, then I guess a fairly high score is ok.

On the other hand a high score based on no friends, failure to tell people apart, failure to tell people's intentions and stuff like that without the memory and math skills wouldn't be any good.

All in all it's a number but most scores can cover a lot of different traits and this means it can be both good and bad.

It's noteworthy lower than 32, which reduces the odds for you having autism. It will, however, not tell you if you have autism or not ^^

Nobody said that it's bad to have a high score. Why should it be bad? There is no reason to feel bad about it. If you were happy yesterday then you can be happy tomorrow too. It's not like this test ruined your life or anything. You will still be the same person.

I get the joke now. However I realise that you are talking about ADHD, not Asperger's. I just read that people with Asperger's have a much higher rate of ADHD for some reason. However Asperger's alone will not cause lack of attention. Quite the opposite. Pure Asperger's will make the person concentrate hard on something.

Joking about the topic is a whole lot more fun than joking about a misunderstanding about the topic. When I realised this is about ADHD, not Asperger's, then it made me smile, but then I started thinking "isn't this kind of mean towards people with ADHD? It's not like they want to be like that. Maybe it's even read as bullying even though I assume that's not the attention".

36.... not sure if that's good or bad. Two people at very different locations, who ended up knowing me well have told me that I could fit the description of having Asperger's syndrome. Still not sure if it's good or bad.

In a way I don't care. I am who I am. On the other hand it could explain why I feel unique (never met anybody like me). My mom has a totally different explanation, which is IQ. I once managed to get "out of scale" in an IQ test. Basically I more or less maxed out a test and ended at 159, which is so close to the max of that specific test that I shouldn't trust the precision of it. Still... My mom asked me to print the wikipedia article on Asperger's though.

Now I wonder (since I think about it again)... what will happen if I'm officially labelled with Asperger's? I can't see it will make me anymore happy so why should I even bother investigating?

For the record: I'm no rainman ^^ (though I do tend to remember stuff)

        whats a rainman?

LOL. I thought everybody would know. Basically it's a movie about a man named Raymond who happens to be a savant (a variation of autism). I can really recommend watching this movie as it's a great movie and not what you would expect of a Hollywood movie. For once it's no action, but all about looking into the mind of person, who have a mind, which is totally different from the rest of us (or the rest of you?)

Rainman was inspired by Kim Peek, who is somewhat like that for real. I saw this guy on TV where you saw him read (his main hobby). He has one eye on each page and scans two pages at once in seconds and he remembers around 95% of it. To quote wikipedia about him

Kim also enjoys approaching strangers and showing them his talent for calendar calculations by telling them on which day of the week they were born and what news items were on the front page of major newspapers

I hope this tells what THE Rainman is (not a. There can be only one :P)

It's not a good thing or a bad thing. If you have it, it's just one of your characteristics, like the color of your eyes or your hair. I don't know why some people feel the need to "cure" autism, it's just another flavor of human. ^^ You have trouble in social situations, but then you get to be good at other things!

I thought a bit about what you said and came to the conclusion that in one way you are right about the test being poor. When doing it I could tell which answers would provide a high score. If I answered based on guessing in order to just get a high score I would end up with at least 45 (out of max 50). A test should be designed so cheating and prediction like that shouldn't be too easy.

Then again maybe you need to have a high score to be able to pinpoint how you get a high score :P

I think the otaku gene provides an extra points in an AQ test. After all the average otaku will likely always be different from the average person in the general population. Collecting figures and knowing all of then is an asperger's activity, though it's not limited to people with asperger's.

Why it's so many people with 23, instead of 22 and 24 and such.... pure random I guess ^^

I encountered AQ somewhere else and it stated that there are two interesting numbers. 32 is the level where Asperger's can be present (already stated here). The other interesting number is 17. People with an AQ of 17 or lower functions normally.

Calculating a bit on the results posted here gives a quite interesting result.
32% has 17 or lower and is considered normal with no issues in daily life
59% has 18-31 and have some degree of issues
    9% has 32+ and could have Asperger's.

In the population in general it's assumed that 0,3% has Asperger's. I kind of suspected this, but I didn't expect that only 1 out of 3 would be considered normal.

At the same time I retested my AQ score elsewhere and surprisingly it ended up as 44. This means it shifted 8 points. I also found somebody online who have diagnosed Asperger's and he came up with a score of 25. I wouldn't put too much faith in this test.

    - Sounds about right, but I'm more manic-depressive than autistic. Hell, I have a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics and HATE Maths.

I notice a lot of the questions were about social interactivity and whether or not we can tolerate having our routines (Habits) disrupted. I don't think that's quite fair, because it isn't taking into account what culture you're brought up in. But like Einstein said: "There is no greater insanity than to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result."

Not surprising, some have told me that I am an autistic hehe. IMO, my personality fits well with my line of work though, an IT instructor-in-practice and researcher. This test is fundamentally flaw though, if you read up on its purpose and description, it's pretty easy to cheat your way for high or low score. The question pool needs to be larger and well it has some question that are either similar or asked the same thing in the opposite way. These stems the question whether they take answers from these questions under a different weight or whatever, hum... not interested enough to check :D.

    25.
Four LCD monitors are to be credited for my high score. :)
I'm guessing die hard collectors fall in the 22 and above range.
Why would anyone choose figures over people?
Is this a preference to people or an addition to?
In my case I don't meet many people except for clients who hound me wanting things done.
The place looks deathly bland without any sprucing and my PVC's do the trick.
As an artist seeing creations converted into tangibility is very pleasing.
One of my goals is to produce my own figures. I have to achieve making and finding time first.
The big hand syndrome works against me 24/7.
