Anime Wishlist: Spring 2011

Anime & figures are like chocolate & peanut butter -- they can be enjoyed independently, but like a Reese's peanut butter cup, they go so well together. Along with the right figure, a good anime is like one half of a backalley mugger duo -- the anime holds you by your ankles to shake out the cash from your pockets while the figures swoop in to collect it in a big velvet sack. As Ashlotte & Chag both have a policy of only collecting figures of character they are familiar with, the quality and outcome of an anime season is naturally a big deal. So out of the innumerable girls from the spring 2011 anime season, were there any who managed to set our hearts aflutter? The short answer is yes, and as for the long answer...well, watch to find out!

In the first part, Chag & Ash celebrates thunder thighs and going commando.

  • 0:49 -- Drossel von Flügel from Fireball Charming
  • 6:39 -- Touhara Asuha from Lotte no Omocha!

The second part is all about detective lolis and cross-generational combos. In an unprecedented move, Ashlotte expresses his love for women of *gasp* legal age! If this isn't a sign that the world is coming to an end, I don't know what is.

  • 0:00 -- Victorique from Gosick
  • 6:17 -- Touwa Erio & Touwa Meme from Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

In the third part, Chag confesses to crying like a little girl over cartoons, and Ash confesses his love for girls with deformed eyebrows! What a pair of mentalists!

  • 0:00 -- Honma Meiko (Menma) & Anjou Naruko (Anaru) from Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
  • 6:40 -- Kamiki Izumo & Moriyama Shiemi from Ao no Exorcist

The last part is all about Hanasaku Iroha, where Ashlotte once again flocks to the abandoned Christmas fruitcake while Chag revels in the charm of child labour.

  • 0:00 -- Wajima Tomoe & Matsumae Ohana from Hanasaku Iroha

All in all, the 2011 spring season was certainly bountiful, and with any luck, we'll see figures of at least a couple of these girls at the summer WonFes that's just around the corner. What were your favourite shows last season, and which characters would you love to see receive the figure treatment? Let us know in the comments!

Personally, I like Figmas a lot because they're a great balance between cost, detail, articulation and playability. Ashlotte, on the other hand, places greater value in detail and size. He also doesn't care much about articulation and playability, so the key advantages of the figma line (and small action figures in general) don't really do much for him. I'm guessing that asking for a fixed-pose figure of Drossel may seem like madness for a lot of people, but I can see where he's coming from. XD

To sum it up, there's nothing "wrong" with Figmas -- rather, it's just a case of people having different values. =)

ah. well i value articulation and variability. I'm an animator.

when i have free time i like to take toys and make movies. Japanese figures are fantastic at bringing detail and articulation together.
and like you said about droseel, the heapful of accessories they add in. (wouldnt you want everything possible for Drossel?)

haha so yes u are right, its all personal preference

Wow, I just checked out your YouTube channel. Good Lord, that's truly amazing stuff -- and all in a day's work, too! I rather like the dramatic overhead lighting for the Sakuya review, and I also enjoy your sense of humour. Big Daddy going down in one shot? They don't build'em like then used to, it seems. =P

When I reviewed the original Figma Drossel, I said "it's as if she's MEANT to be a figma". I'm not sure how true that statement is, but I have a feeling the new Drossel was designed with toys in mind. The open design of her hips is probably going ope a lot of possibilities, and the sheer amount of accessories would be the icing on the cake. I normally don't buy 2 figures of the same character, but if Max Factory decides to release multiple versions of the new Figma Drossel each with its own assortment accessories, I would be sold in a heartbeat.

Glad to see you're enjoying Ao no Exorcist as well! I'm a little disappointed that they're already throwing fillers in the series this early, but I love the characters and I'm looking forward to see how they develop. I definitely want a Shiemi figure, too. <3 And it must be in her kimono! A small, trading figure of Shiemi is up for preorder, but for some reason they chose to put her in a school uniform instead (probably because they can't cram too much detail in figures so small ). I would also love some AnoHana figures, and since the series became so popular here in Japan, I doubt we have to wait long before something is announced! ^ ^

Maybe we'll here some good news from Wonder Festival next week~

Anyhow, I liked watching your figure wish lists! I thought it was a great idea.
