Questions about Communication in Japan

In about two weeks, I'll be in Tokyo to study business and Japanese for about three months..

I have a laptop and I know my US cellphone won't work there, so I'm trying to find alternatives for communication.

I don't really want to buy a Japanese cell phone because I'll only be in Japan for three months :/ So, I've been debating either buying an iTouch or a 3DS for the browser and internet capabilities. I know Nintendo has a few wifi hotspots in the US at least, but I don't know about in Tokyo...I don't know how prevalent free wifi is in Tokyo...

Any suggestions?? ;3;

    For times like these, I wish they had cells you could rent.
    That would be revolutionary!

      I know there are some rent-a-phone services in Japan, but I'm not sure on the cost/reliability of them...

      Plus the one's I've found online are more expensive to rent than buying an itouch or a 3ds

        Waaaaiiiittttt, they have phones, you can rent? PEOPLE BE STEALING MY IDEAS.
        But yeah, the problem I see is, are you gonna be using the itouch of 3ds.
        I personally lean towards the 3ds, only cause of games you can get in japan or anywhere afterwards. But that's just me. :3

          But 3DS games are region locked... I brought a 3DS while in Japan last, its useless to me now, cant even charge it since AU uses 240v.

          I was told at Softbank you can rent simcards at the airport on unlocked mobiles.

            Seriously? Why do companies do that?
            Do you know if the xl is region locked too? ; 3;

            Well, then my advice is totally useless!

              only the 3DS, still plays DS games region free, it's rather annoying cause I wouldnt of purchased one if knew about it before.

                Oh wow, to the ebay with you!
                I don't know if I'll get one or not. if they suddenly make all the games I love in English, perhaps.

            The problem is my cellphone isn't unlocked...I can't access the sim card without opening the entire thing.

            You can get an adapter to charge it, right?
            Were you able to connect to the nintendo wifi with the 3DS?

              luckily it works with AU 3DS chargers.
              I hooked into maccas wifi but it came up in japanese :/

              There is heaps and heaps of wifi over there but most are locked. :(

    USA and Japan share the same region right?

    I've got both, the itouch browser is a lot faster than the 3DS. I'd go for the iTouch for the better browser, but if there are games on the 3DS you want go with that.

      They share the same region for Blu-ray encoding, but not for the 3DS...3DS is region locked :/

      I know that there are special nintendo hotspots for the 3DS, but I've heard that there aren't many free wifi hotspots in Tokyo

    One of my mates is over there now and rented a device called Rentafone. The premis is that they rent you a pocket wifi device along with a simcard for the phone.

    Think it was like $70 for unlimited internet for a month.

        If your budget is that tight I would simply leech of the frr wifi's dotted all over the place like McDonalds and other food store chains. Most hotels provide free wireless depending on how cheap your accomodations are.

    I would suggest the iTouch. The browser is faster than the 3DS. And when I was on the Internet once on the 3DS it wouldn't load the page.
    ; A;
    But, aren't there Internet cages over there too?
