Which Lens Do You Use? (*-ω-)。o○( )
Harro (^o^)/
Recently I bought my first non-compact camera. I'm a complete newbie to photography. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 (32.000 yen with the 14-42mm lens) :3
So I was wondering, which lenses do people use to take photo's of their Dollfies? (figures?)
I only have a "LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S." lens at the moment.
Hope to get some info about other lenses :3

Hi there fellow panasonic comrade!
I recently purchased the GF3 last month, and the lens i have is the same as yours, the 14-42mm that comes as an option if you wish to spend that little bit more (in my case).
Its a fine lens and it has worked remarkable when i take photos of my figure.
You can check it out at my blog if your curious.
As for Dolfie, well youll have to ask the dolfie masters, but im sure it should be alright.
Thanks ^o^
I'm wondering about low light conditions..
apparently other lenses are better I think :/..
Zero experience though ^^;;
Primes! I like the older 35mm film lenses rather than the new kit lenses, could be because i'm crazy.
Hmmm ^^ older 35mm film lenses? what's the difference with 'new kit lenses' (again, newbie here ^^;;)
I also use Nikon 35mm f/1.8 prime lens, it's good for many situations, especially in a low light settings.
I don't shoot Panasonic unfortunately.
But I shoot Canon!
My main lens is the 24-70mm F2.8L which is about 120,000 yen brand new right now.
Woah! expensive! ∑(O_O;)Shock!!
So why 24-70mm? Why not a prime lens?
Is F2.8L enough for a dollfie shoot at night (like with city lights only)?
I'm asking because I'm wondering if my 14-42mm with F3.5 will work in such conditions :)
I suppose if you only shoot dollfies/figures then a prime lens would be suitable. But I shoot people/portraits mainly and then figures on the side. The added flexibility of a zoom is very important to me.
F2.8 will be sufficient for city lights, but you may still have to crank up that ISO. 3.5 is... (2?) stops slower and might be stretching it...
Ah! So basically a prime lens(with lower aperture than my current lens) would be better for lower light?^^ thanks for your explanation! ^^
Exposure is not only about aperture.
ISO and shutter speed are also equally important. Get yourself a good tripod and you won't need as big of an aperture. Shooting good shots handheld at night is like shooting yourself in the foot really.
Remember, it's not about the equipment you have. If you're really good, you can shoot amazing shots with nothing but a pin hole camera.
A prime lens is only better for lower light if you aperture can be stopped down to f/1.4, IMHO, not recommended because you will lose quite a lot of details on the subject as the DoF is crazy.
Prime lens is only *Shaper*. Not all lens is sharp btw, a good Zoom lens beats a cheap prime lens real hard in terms of Colour IQ.
I assume lower aperture mean wide/bigger aperture? Smaller number is bigger for aperture.
Lower aperture number = wider/bigger aperture
Ah! Tripod! ^o^ Ok!!:)
yea I know, just pointing out.
Hello!
How did you end up with a Panasonic? Don't mind me but in terms of price and quality ratio, the Sony NEX is a much better choice IMHO. You get a DSLR (a55) sensor inside a *compact* camera.
Anyway what's done is done. You should spend some time figuring out how the camera works, what is aperture, shutter and finally, ISO. These 3 elements will help to improve your photo quality when you understand these concepts. There's no point in shooting Auto. Manual is the way to go.
The lenses currently I have for my Nikon D3 (366,417 yen) are
1) 24-70mm f/2.8G (170,994 yen)
2) 200mm f/4 Micro (146,572 yen)
Overall a Portrait zoom lens is the best for you, which in this case, your original kit lens. (14-42mm) That is the best. If you have a Sony DSLR, you can opt for a Carl Zeiss lens which is the top lens maker in the world for Hasselblad, Leica and other renowned legendary camera.
Either way, since you are stucked with a Panasonic, you can choose to sell it away, get a Sony for it's better choice of lens. IMHO far superior in Dolls/Figures photography. Actually for all genre but IMHO after using all types of cameras, Sony Alpha DSLR or the NEX is the superior choice in Figures and Dolls. I have some pictures to show which are taken by the NEX or Alpha.
Now for the unlimited budget works, you can choose this camera for your photography needs, but this requires advance experience in understanding lighting.
I have a Hasselblad H3D-II 39 (1,950,706 yen) with these lenses for my Dollfie Photography
1) 50mm HC (365,757 yen)
2) 80mm HC (FOC included with the body)

Oh yes you said something about night shots?
In this case, you need a camera which has a very good ISO performance, like the Sony Alpha A580, Nikon D7000, Nikon D3, Nikon D700. Even if you have a rather wide aperture at f/2.8, it is not enough for night shots because at ISO > 2000 you are bound to get unwanted noise on your pictures. So don't bother about aperture because if the camera isn't good in ISO performance, don't bother about wide aperture, unless you are talking about f/0.95 (Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95) to your standard f/1.4 lenses.
I believe in Straight out of the camera because I used to be a film shooter. So I prefer to shoot, and upload straight away after I take my photos.
For figures and doll shooting at night, you confirm need a tripod. A tripod is essential in shooting at night because of the low shutter speed.
Actually I also used a tripod in Dollfie photography as well so that I can concentrate on posing my daughter and disregard the camera's position.
So what I want to say is, use your current lens and do more shooting practices! =D
Thanks for the bunch of information :)
I really needed a camera with a swivel screen! (because of my youtube dance video's) which is why I chose Panasonic ^o^ And I love the results ^o^
Ah I see, The NEX also has a somewhat limited swivel screen heh. Besides that on Dollfie Photography, I doubt you will need to use that swivelness haha
Anyway what's important now is, learn the basics of photography, you can retain your current lens and see how different settings affects your picture. Because, you are the one that determine your picture, not the quality of the lens, unless you had really outperform your lens =)
i use the same panasonic camera range as u but with the older 14-45mm len, i also have the 20mm prime and 45-200mm lens. the 14-42mm is fine for dollfie.
if ur taking photo in low light or at night don't buy a new len. save urself the money and buy a cheap tripod for night photos. the skill of a photographer is to make the best use of the equipment they have and the subject / composition of the photo is more important i think.
oh i am the one who bought Yui DD from that shop u recommended = ) from akiba 2 months ago.
I use a Pentax K-r and have my 35mm f2.4 prime lens on most of the time. Which is equivalent to 52mm on 35mm film format. I'm thinking of getting a faster prime (50mm f1.4) :)
I agree about getting a tripod, if you don't already have one. Trying to shoot handheld at night will be tricky, unless you bump up the iso which means more noise.
Do you like to shoot bokeh photos?
bokeh? *google*.. yup, I like bokeh!
Tripod. *nods* Have on in Holland.. not here in Japan.. will thank about it! Thanks :3
At my job I use Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM
Thanks!!! ^^
Before you considering buying or buy any new lenses, first get familiar with your using your camera and its current lens, enjoy photography with what you have now. If after a while you outgrow your current lens, you can still buy a new one or upgrade. ^^
For Dollfie Dream photography currently I use a Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens, but first I used the kit lens that came with my Canon 450D.
Anyway, regardless of the camera or lens you use, the person using them is still what matters most to make good photos or enjoy photography. ^^
Thanks!! That's true..:) I will practice more ^O^
I use a Nikon D90. 105mm 2.8 Macro mainly for shooting figures, 50mm 1.8 for dollfie and 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 for some dollfie and people photos.
Thank you!!!! ^^
i have a Canon 60D with the awesome 18-200mm 4.7-5.6 kit lens
i also bought a new 60mm macro lens with f-2.8
so far the macro lens is what i use most of the time, gets me great pictures
Hmm yes a macro lens seems very useful indeed! Thanks! :)
I have Nikon D50. Always use Nikkor F-mount lenses.
Thank you!^^
Sony a55
Lens~ Zeiss 24-70ZA
Thnx!!^^
I have a 300mm headache.
Your camera and lens is perfectly fine... best thing you can do meow is to learn more about the functionality and manual controls of your camera.
Congratulations & have fun.
Heh thanks :).. Have to practice a lot more, but I like it!! ^O^
An expensive new camera just for pics of Yumi? Now that's real love. LOL
Heh.. :P
For Yumi, figures and youtube dancing ;)..
Otaku = Otaku :p
Now you're on record as saying you're going to be doing figure videos so you can't back out. LOL
