Happy Halloween with Dead Master!

Posted by monev

I decided to go all out on my pumpkin this Halloween and carve a Dead Master themed pumpkin. I'd known of the technique where you carved half-into the pumpkin and let the light shine through, but I've never tried it myself before. The idea is that you don't have to worry about floating parts, and can increase detail.

Like I said I hadn't actually tried this before, but i decided to put my Bachelor of Fine Art degree to work, and rolled up my sleeves. The eyes didn't come out quite as I had hoped, but for a first try I'm relatively pleased.

I didn't Take many "in-progress" pictures, as I was at my sister's house and didn't have a camera other then my phone. but I've got a little.

I am also including some of the pumpkins my sisters made, just cause they're nice too =)

First I hit the Interwebs to find a good image, and Photoshopped over it to make it a black and white with lines wide enough to be possible (hopefully) to carve.

Then taped the printout onto the side of the pumpkin and poked into the paper/pumpkin with a small scalpel-sharp knife, transferring the pattern.

It then became a matter of cutting down 1/8 of an inch on the light sides, and scraping down to make as flat a surface as I could without disturbing the small dark parts.

Once the outside was done, I took a Spoon and scrapped out the inside thinner and thinner, till light could glow through.

Finished!

Whoa, nice job! I hope to use the same technique tomorrow to make a KyuubeiLantern, but that won't have nearly the detail of your DM one. Thanks for sharing it with us!

It'll be his face, like those creepy closeups when he gets to the heart of his contract pitch. Hopefully it'll go well with the Psycho Sparkle my friend is going to do. Either way, I do intend to take pictures!

LOL, I made a Kyubey pumpkin too, or rather am in the process of making one. And yeah, thanks for the post, monev; it's good to know the proper technique to make sure the light shines through properly.
