My recent trip to Japan was filled with sightseeing and figure buying. However, my friend got me on to something quite unique... storyboards and production sketches. We found a couple shops in Nakano Broadway that specialized in these items and picked up quite a few (4th floor, in one of the corners). They're relatively inexpensive (500-2000 yen for storyboards) and are, for the most part, originals that were used during the creation of the show. Some are photocopies for the assistants or folks that just need directions, though many carry some handwritten touches and notes. There are also some sketches to be had, which are more than likely originals done as concept sketches prior to going to animation.

Of all the pieces of loot I wound up with from Japan, these are probably the most unique and one-of-a-kind!

Thought bubble was put in with pencil after booklet was printed... it says something to the effect of "I want steak" (or so my translator told me)

A scene from Aa! Megami-sama, season 2, episode 9.

> Img ID#21207 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Actual shot from the anime (doesn't it look like the third frame on the right page?)

> Img ID#21208 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Production notes/storyboards for ARIA the Natural, episode 10.

> Img ID#21209 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Original sketches for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou ~Quiet Country Cafe~ OVA2. Each frame is actually part of an entire set that steps through the animation for each scene. If I put them together, I could create a flip book to recreate the scene from the anime!

Fully framed and partially colored scene. Looks pretty close to what the final product was. ^.^

Alpha falls over and goes to sleep.

Unique loot indeed! I'd think that would be more expensive, but I guess not.

Awesome loot, I love unique/limited stuff like that. Seems like I have to go search for some to buy when I go to Japan. ('~')

Nice, wish I knew where to find the stores that sold such things. They'd make great gifts for my friends back home. ;)

4th floor, Nakano Broadway. Take the JR out to Nakano, go to the little shopping plaza just outside the station (there's a yummy tayaki stand on the outside of it) and go down the middle. Eventually you'll hit a second building with a sign Nakano Broadway. Go up to the 4th floor and walk around. You'll find the Mandarake that sells the storyboards in one corner, it's next to the shop that sells dolls and supplies. They also sell anime cels too!
