Sooo, apparently theres going to be a remake of Space battle ship Yamato.
But it’s not another movie ala Resurrection.
And it’s Not another spin off ala Yamato 2520.
but an actual, Honest to god remake of series one, with Yutaka Izubuchi (RahXephon) as director, Nobuteru Yuki (Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War) designing the characters, Makoto Kobayashi (Giant Robo, Last Exile, Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection) Mechanical designs and both anime studios XEBEC and AIC handling production.
Could this be the series that finally brings Yamato back from the long slump of failed sequels that have plagued this franchise - or is this fated to simply disappear beneath the waves?
Myself and the world will find out when This new Yamato series premieres with a feature length movie, comprising the first 2 episodes, on April 7, 2012 in Japan.

The recent live action movie was brilliant imo, but the art for the Anime remake looks kinda too retro for me. It looks cudly like Astroboy when I was hoping for something with a little more grit like the live action movie was.
If it were done more in the style of say Samurai 7 or Cowboy Bebop it would be awesome. Guess I'll wait and see how it ends up.
I think the style was intended more as as a compromise - by keeping the original art style for the characters it makes it more recognizable to the older fans, while at the same time updating it enough to appeal to newer fans - remember this'll be for many fans the first time they've ever seen this series proper and the animators cant afford to alienate anyone.
I won't miss it. I am a fan of the TV series and the more the merrier. ;)
For me the first Yamato movie [then under its UK distributed name " Space Cruiser Yamato" and space firebird 2772 were my gateway anime.
kinda showing my age here aren't I?
I don't think there is much difference compared to mine. :P
In Brazil, Yamato was showed in the mid-eights only and I was already completely addicted by that time. I pretty much watch anime (the VERY old ones no one knows about anymore) since I started watching TV.
That is why for me it always sounds funny when people talk about "classics" like Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya... I wonder where I should place Yamato, Hakushon Daimao, Honey Honey no Suteki na Bouken? Ancient? Pre-historical? But I will always love them all (including new ones).
