.hack//SIGN Lovable Collection 1 Review
.hack, for being such a large series, doesn't have much in the way of figures. But what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality.
I am the proud owner of fourteen .hack figures. To my knowledge, I only need three more to complete my collection.
My first .hack figure was Subaru of the .hack//SIGN Lovable Collection Volume 1. I've never taken her out of her box, but I find myself longing to at times, just so I can inspect the craftsmanship closely. But of course, being a collector, I won't. The packaging is clear, so at least I have that! The packaging has several images from the anime on the back, contained in the series' trade mark hexagons. Behind those images is a computer displaying the Altimit screen. On the front is a sample of Subaru's character design in full color, with a CG computer chip background.
The figure of Subaru comes with a stand for her feet and her axe. The color scheme for the doll is spot on and matches the anime. Subaru's light blue dress has carefully sculpted folds that emulate real fabric while keeping the character's design. The "cloth" that covers her arm is slightly darker, with careful folds also accentuating a sense of realism. The pink accent and lavender design on her dress and sleeves and collar fit well with the blue. Her necklace is carefully painted on in gold and red. She has a gentle smile on her face, and her red "wave" symbol peeks out from under her bangs. Her eyes are carefully painted on, and look even while emulating the anime's stylistic eyes. While parts of the figure are glossy plastic (the skin and clothing on her chest and arms) her dark blue-green hair lacks the sheen. There are even small hair-strand details in some places, which make it seem realistic. Unfortunately, due to the .hack logo that is on the bottom of the plastic packaging, I can’t comment much on her shoes, which are mostly blocked from sight. From what I can see, however, the dark blue high heels seem to match fairly well with the rest of the figure, and have holes for attachment to the accompanying stand, in case the collector wanted to display her out of the box.
My only fault with the Subaru figure is her wings. While they are the right size and color, the feathers are sculpted in a way that does not quite match the smooth appearance of the rest of the figure. However, they do look like realistic wings with bits of down and feathers texturing their design. The axe that accompanies her is rather lackluster, but the design matches the anime perfectly. If they had put any more detail in it, it might have taken away from the actual focus of this collectable--the Subaru figure.
All in all, it is a great figure and I'm very glad I bought her all those years ago.
My most recent addition to my ever expanding .hack collection is Mimiru of the Lovable Collection Volume 1. After years of searching for her at conventions and on ebay, a family member tracked her down and gave her to me for Christmas.
For the most part her packaging is the same, just with Mimiru drawings in place of the Subaru drawings. The figure itself is well crafted, just like the Subaru figure. Mimiru too comes with a stand and her weapon—a sword, in this case. The sword is well decorated to match the anime’s design. This girl has a spunky smile and eyes that seem to ask the collector “Yeah? So, what are you going to do about it?” Her “wave” symbol marks her cheeks and arms. Her hair, which, like Subaru, lacks sheen and the sculpted detail matches the anime’s depiction well. Her outfit is spot on with color and sculpted details, from head to toe.
Overall, the .hack//SIGN Lovable Collection Set 1 are a great investment for any .hack fan.
