80s Style Konata
Hey, how would Lucky Star look if it was made in the 1980s? Well, here's one possibility for Izumi Konata. I think the plot would be substantially different (as in, there would be one), too. If there were more chases and exciting action, then count me in!
How did this come about? Well, I decided that I wanted to draw Konata in an eighties style, after seeing some photoshop edits of modern characters to make them look like they were in an older style. To my mind, they superficially got the look right, but because it was a photoshop rather than a full new drawing, it didn't quite get the little details. There are a lot of structural differences in the way 80s anime characters were drawn versus how modern characters are- and it's a lot deeper than just extra lines on the face or poofier hair.
As for this pic, costuming and colors come straight from the eighties. The couch is based on a real eighties couch from Ikea (long gone now, but I remember it from when I was a really little kid).
As Konata is short and petite for her age, so I tried to get that look right without going into excessive exaggeration.

Ranma half/star :3
That's exactly what I thought of, haha.
Neat
Thanks!
Thought the same here. lol the style of art is to close to Ranma I think to capture LS in my mind. ^^; But a pretty good edit :D
lol I was thinking more of Lum, but same artist anyway. :)
Very cool canadawbd! You're Canadian, I take it? :D
Thanks! And yes, I'm Canadian- I'm in Calgary, where it's snowing right now.
A lot of those older animes really did have more girls who whore earrings. :O
Ooh looks nice, a bit Ranma style to me. Great work!
Thanks! I had fun putting it together!
Ahhhh, the eighties-- big hair, big earrings and real tiny shorts!
In real life it didn't always look great, but in anime it can really spice up a design.
Ranma/noriko (gunbuster) combination??
Not really- I looked more at stuff from 84-85 to get the look down.
hahaha AWESOME!
Thanks!
Hahaha, I personally like this Konata better than the real one. *shot*
Thanks! I had fun putting it together.
Oooh similar to Dirty Pair and Gunsmith Cats. Nice art, Kenichi Sonoda an inspiration? :D
Thanks- normally I am inspired by Sonoda's work, but this one was more of a pastiche of different design themes.
Pretty good job! Though next time you cell shade you might want to consider using the pen tool instead of the pencil/brush; it gives a much cleaner line.
Thanks! Unfortunately, this was done in OpenCanvas, which doesn't have a pen tool.
Laaame! The pen tool is awesome. How dare they not have a pen tool!
Well done ^^
Thank-you!
Great work! For some reason, I've been really interested in Anime from the 80's as of late, which is odd, seeing as how I generally loathe 80's entertainment (well, at least stuff released from the US)...
...except for Major League....and Ghostbusters.....and Vacation....and the Star Wars movies, though the first came out in '77....and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam... >_>
Thanks! I've been watching more 80's anime lately myself. There's some real gems out there that have been forgotten- unfairly, I think.
I personally have to say that the pic i more 1980s Gainax, as in maybe Daicon III/IV and Gunbuster, not Ranma 1/2. But, despite that feeling... Nice job. :3
Thanks! I didn't pick a specific design style, I went more for a pastiche of a look, so maybe that's why it's hard to tell.
Great drawing.
Thanks!
Saw a bit of Mynmei in her... :3
Bit of a lot of characters, really. I had to give that 80's look a close one to understand it.
Looks nice , Konata wearing earrings is definately in the 80's .
Still love the 80's-ish eyes .
Thanks- I had fun putting this one together.
This style really is nostalgic....
WAH that's amazing <333 Wow you got her so sweetly, and it actually looks like Konata in an older style, that's so cool!
Really nice, you captured the 80's-style Anime to a tee. Sort of reminds me of Dirty Pair character design.
Is that a Super Fami? Oh! Image looks fantastic! I miss the days of "Kimagure Orange Road" and the like.
