Master Grade Gundam F90

(MG Gundam F91 and F90 ADS kit conversion)
Modeled by Wavehawk
This is basically an upgrade to the circa 1990 Gundam F90 kit using the internal skelton and some parts from the MG F91 kit. It's a project I've spent almost 2 years on (since I discovered the Master grade F-91 skeleton), and has been well worth it, so I'm putting this in as my entry for the Bandai competition.

The F90 is probably my favorite UC Gundam, and admittedly the last design from Kunio Okawara I liked. What I've done here is use the F91 skeleton as a base and modified the F90 parts to fit--and it wasn't as easy as it sounds. Overall, I think I could do a better conversion next time, but at the moment it's one of my better kitbash builds.

Essentially, it's just the Gundma I worked on hardest; I tried to keep the weapons packs as-is so that they can be used on some of my older F90 kits, but still swappable with the new stuff.

Really wish Bandai would make an official MG F90, one reverse-compatible with the older F90 kit packs.

Gundam F90 with all weapons. Sadly, I don't have the P-Type kit, so there are some bits lacking in this picture. There was a reference picture somewhere long ago of this same scene, drawn in watercolor. Wish I could have a high-quality scan of it.

Comparison with old Gundam F90 kit. 250ml can energy drink for reference. Too bad I couldn't make my F90 conversion shorter, but I prefer the sleeker dimensions of my new one as opposed to the older kit.

Comparison with Master Grade F91. Since I used the Gundam F91 frame as the internal skeleton of my F90, it's actually the same height. Sadly, the Gundam F91 MG kit is a bit unbalanced, so I couldn't stand him up straight for a proper height comparison.

F-90 A-Type. "Assault" type is considered the canon configuration of the F-90, much like the Aile Strike is the canon config for the Strike Gundam.

Although IMHO the A-Type is far better equipped. Beam Cannon and Heavy Machine Cannon in the pack, plus the Beam Bazooka and two spare magazines. The big things on the arms and legs are fuel packs--though the A-Type is highly maneuverable and fast, it's a real fuel hog.

A-Type rear view. Normally, the Beam Bazooka is mounted on the rear rack while the F90 A-Type carries the Beam Rifle, but for this pic I felt it better to keep the Bazooka at hand.

Sharp-eyed fans of F91 will notice that the F90's bazooka is the same as the one used by the Vigna-Ghina in the final battle of the F91 movie.

F-90 D-Type front view. "Destroy"-Type is basically all shell-firing weaponry, and it performs kind of like the HeavyArms from Gundam Wing.

Leg view of F-90 D-Type. Those are maneuverability thrusters, necessary for all the weight on the D-type.

Upper view of F-90 D-type. I'm trying to emulate a scene where the F90 launches all of it's weapons. It's one of those cool pictures in the manga that can't be emulated well in real life with kits.

Back view. The shield on the back is sort of an homage to the original Gundam--soe scenes where it slings the shield on it's back. AFAIK, not many current-day Gundams can do this anymore, much less in kit form.

Front view of F90 V-Type. The V.S.B.R.-Type (Variable Speed Beam Rifle) is practically my first love in terms of Gundam kits (even though I had a Zeta and an S-Gundam long before I had an F90 kit). If you follow UC Gundam history, this system was so effective on the F-90 that they decided to make it standard in the next Gundam prototype--the Gundam F91.

F90 Gundam Full Weapons option. This is the same setup seen in the F90 manga and in SD Gundam G-Generation G-Wars. Essentially, the S- and D-type packs with the bazooka from the A-type.

The VSBR-Type was never introduced in the manga, so no VSBR weapons are shown here. I think the VSBR-Type was only ever shown in the old SNES (Super Famicom) game Gundam F91:Formula Wars.

The F90 kit I used is the old F-90 A-D-S kit. That's 1 F-90 and 3 weapons packs. The other packs are the V-Type, P-Type, and L-Type, all sold as separate kits. Sadly, there are a few weapons packs that were never released; H-Type (Hover), M-Type (Marine), I-Type (Intercept), and if you believe MAHQ, an E-Type (ELINT/EWAC).

      In essence, the F90 is the swiss army knife of UC-era Gundams, and the weapons layouts actually make it on par with most AU Gundams as well: Aile Strike = F90 A-Type, HeavyArms = F90 D-Type, Guncannon/Guntank = F90 S-Type, Dynames = F90 L-Type, F91 = F90 V-Type, Gundam MK-II and Flying Armor = I-Type, Zeta Gundam = F90 P-Type, Dom/Rick Dom = F90 H-Type, Z'Gok = F90 M-Type...etc...

@_@ (Sorry; I'm kind of obsessed with the F90 being my fave MS)

I wish Bandai had gone ahead with their planned MG F90. I remember a prototype of and MG F90 came out on display the same time that the Prototype for the MG F91 came out, but nothing more came of it.

wasn't the F-90 the 1st MS to ever use the Hard Point system? anyway i immediately liked the f-90 ever since i 1st saw it on the old SNES gundam game.

    Nice mod. The thin elbow joints look scary though, like they'll break any time. ^^;

For a sharper look, maybe the mask could be sharpen near the chin?

If you see the pic comparison between my conversion and the older kit, yeah. It's pretty obvious the F90 should have been smaller.

I'm thinking of trying this again with another F90 kit, if I can grab the F90 P-Type and somehow find a place that sells spare MG F91/MG Crossbone frames to work with. The only trouble with the rebuilds is that buying a new MG just for the inner frame is expensive.

Hopefully Bandai will hear your calls for an MG F90. XD With previously non-kits like the Victory getting an MG(sort of) Bandai might have this one in their plans.

back when the MG F91 was announced, they showed a fully designed and built MG F90, yet they never said anything about it since then. too bad, F90's one of my favorite designs, i love the modular weapons packs, they make the giant backpacks on the Strike look stupid and uncreative.

I think that if they built the MG F90 as-is (or with just the A-Type pack), but made it backwards-compatible with the older kit packs, it should sell pretty well.

I mean, look what they're doing with the MG Blue Frame Astray and how it can use the 1/100 Seed Strike packs. It shouldn't be too difficult.

    hand brush? or gundam marker?
i'm not a great airbrush user myself, i haven't even finish anything with it, but i can tell the paint is not well toned...
all i can say is, NICE JOB, though some part require to be "BEE-craft-ed" (all MG design, so far i know in from 2004-now is made by BEE-craft)

Strangely enough, it looks sloppy under the camera but fine (except for the VSBRs) when I hold it up to the light. I suppose you're right--I should go and repaint many of the parts when I can, but it won't be in time for the entries.

The main reason I'm entering this is because of the rework (skeleton and body). I guess that if I had more time, I'd spend more of it trying to refine the joints and paint scheme. Then again, I've been working on the body of this kit for 2 years...

..and only spent 2 hours on the paint job. Eh. I see what I'm doing wrong. :(

I'm more used to building Grunt MS like the GMs and Zakus. I suppose I should be more careful when it comes to the Gundams themselves.

You might want to try the blue painters tape next time. Works wonders when painting in straight lines. Good looking build though !
