Meal in the City: A Japanese Lunch at Sushi-Ya, SM Megamall

Posted by Takako [www]

Here is a recent lunch that I shared with my BF: a spot of Japanese grub, courtesy of one of my favorite haunts for that cuisine. It's called Sushi-Ya and it has a few branches dotted around my city.

In the picture you can see we've started mixing the wasabi into the soy sauce. Yeah, I know, it's not exactly picturesque. I'm not even sure if it's the "done" thing - were we eating in Japan, I wonder, would we have been committing a faux pas?

My boyfriend ate this: unagi don.

Agedashi tofu to share, and my order of katsudon.

The lunch looks great! I will have to try these things. The unagi don for sure.^^
In a how to make sushi video I have, the man mixes wasabi with soy sauce for dipping. I think it tastes good, also separately I mix sriracha hot chili sauce with a dash of rice vinegar to the soy as well. But that's at home.

My parents really love spicy foods, and they mix the wasabi with the soy sauce! I thought that was a typical thing, actually. Everything looks so good~

Woahohohoh. The sashimi slices are still as small and the tofu sauce is syrupy thick just as before. I've seen places that really skimp on the serving sizes... At least that donburi is decent.

From what I can tell you in all of my sushi eating days(going on five years ^_^) it isn't really a huge deal to mix wasabi in the shoyu. I usually don't use more than a pencil eraser sized amount seeing how I don't want to burn my nostrils and so I can actually taste my sushi ^_^ Unagi...mmmmmm.
