El Bastardo's Hellhole (Room)

Posted by El_Bastardo
Why this room is special:

Hello folks. Below are the necessary bullet point facts but before I want to say some words to the photos.
So why are my photos more special than any other photos you ask?? - Because they are authentic and real.
With the (obvious) exception of the katana on the bed (which is in fact a real one) everything is exactly as it is every day. No posing of figures in special ways, no piling up of all my manga and DVDs, this is the real room I live in.

And no this is not just an excuse for not cleaning it before the photo shooting ^_^ (hey it's not that dirty anyway).

Please excuse the poor lighting of the pictures but this room has poor lighting conditions to begin with and I do not own an SLR just a compact digital camera with a normal crappy flash light.

On the walls you see my poster arrangement like I had it for the last "I can't remember anymore how long" years so this is a premiere. Only for you (OK not only but you are the trigger for doing it), live and now I do a "before after" and rearrange my wallpapers collection. See the new version I call "maximum space exploitation" with the last two photos!!

  • Nickname: El Bastardo
  • Age: 27
  • Have been an otaku since 1994 (over 15 years)
  • Nationality: German
  • Location of the room: Germany
  • My collection consists of everything nerdy: Figures (including over 100 Gashapons), video games, anime, manga, artbooks and all the good stuff. Especially my figure collection can be seen at MyFigureCollection.net
  • How much money it already drained out of my life I can't say but that's what life is for!!
  • Favorite Item?? - I'm the type of guy that can't just focus on one aspect (like MMORPG players can) but I'm proud of my Mononoke Hime hard cover Japanese first edition artbook
  • You can find my latest thoughts at my personal shrine http://figurefan.blogspot.com/
  • Why my room is a unique example: It's maximum "otakuness" on limited space, figure love to the best and it just has the "fan factor".
  • Some people ask me "Hey when do you stop with these childish hobby of yours. Will you still do it when you are over 50??" - And I say "YES" ^_^ !!

If someone want to ask: Yes, the two non anime related posters on the wall you see is from the "X-Files". I was a huge fan back in the days and I just loves Gillian Anderson. Not visible is the classic "I want to believe" poster from agent Mulder.

If the tiny possibility might happen that my exotic room is chosen to be shown to the world in the book I can make additional and/or better photos.
And also yes I know it's not only packed it's jammed. So many things in only 13m² is nuts. Subwoofer under the tables, seven loudspeakers cramped in every little nook but it's effective and I like it that way.

Hope you like it too and if not that's even better because that would proof I'm unique ^_- !!

Hehe I just noticed that some people piled up all their stuff on the bed or on their desks to show as much as possible.

So i thought I need a better way to stand out in the broad mass so I used it as a lead headline ^_^
And hey it worked people react to it.

And sure don't take it too seriously I know that all other rooms are also authentic (the power of marketing *cough*)!!

People that come visit me, always look arround and say:
Your not an otaku, your room is much to tidy.

I like my appartment nice and clean.
And don't want to stack up posters and everything

yep most people think a room will be messy
        because im a otaku

        the same with figure cabinets
I hate it to stack up figures

I want to see each and every figure by it self, not behind other figures
or even 1/8 and other scales in the same space XD

In general I share your opinion about the figures and I know with most of my friends it's the same.
The optimum is a nice clean space for every one of them, separated and with good visibility. It's just this dilemma between limited space and "I want more figures".
So I guess most of use try to conter this with creativity -_^

But posters have to be. They aren't called "wallpapers" in English for nothing!!

in my opinion wallpapers make a room look cramped and a bit less adult
(not if they are ero XD)

            also a bit messy
no matter how good you clean

            but thats just my opinion

maybe its like that because im a designer

Maybe it's because you are a designer but maybe it's just because you like your visual heavy hobby world and your relaxing home world separated -_^

Either way is fine and different opinions are also important and fine too. If we all would have the same we would be clone robots.

For me I like to be reminded what I like. Maybe it's because my every day live is hard enough so my room is my escaping pod?!

I think a few well placed posters or wall hangings has the ability to break up the empty space of a wall. Now, if they were plastered all over the place without any wall showing... now that's just crazy ;)

I keep my separation by leaving all of my otaku stuff on the second floor of my house. I generally entertain guests downstairs, so it's mostly normal decoration there.

Hey wow do you two realize we three are a good example of three extremes: yakumo likes it clean in his room and to separate his hobby, I like it extremely filled where my room reflects my likings and Asian Ed likes a balanced middle.

We three are like the pillars of otakuness choices ^_^ !!

Yeah, posters make me feel like a room's cramped, too, so I avoid them for the most part. :P Which is why all I have in terms of anime stuff in my room is my figures.

              Yeah, not hot on having lots of wall posters either. My room used to be like that but they all came down about 2 years ago... now there's just enough there to cover up where the paint came off ^^;

As I said before it's interesting how different oppinions between similar people are present. I (and many more people) like it cramped with their hobby stuff and there are equally many people that think differently. That is why live is interesting!!

I don't really get your logic on how your room is "special" just because you left it the way it is. I'd rather see a clean room than a dirty one especially if its going to be published in a magazine. Just thought I'd put that out there.

As I said some comments above (http://www.figure.fm/post/en/410/El+Bastardo+s+Hellhole+Room.html#comment-3550) it is just a kind of lead story. So a way to catch a reader's attention (you know like newspapers do -_^).

And for the clean/dirty discussion: What is your definition of dirty?? - I really doubt that anyone's room is really dirty in terms of the word.
If you mean empty and clearly arranged versus full and stuffed like a storage that's just a question of taste (as you can read in the posts above).

I know many people that are quite the same and love to be closely surrounded by their loved stuff as do I know some that love their room more empty like a "demopnstration room" in a catalog.

But again just different tastes (a good thing)!!
